View Full Version : Where's 3rd Gear?

Hey guys,
I have a K3 650s, with 20k ish on the clock.
The issue was slowing down on a slip road shifting from 6>5>4 OK selected 3rd and nothing there like a false neutral, I didn't hear any bangs or crunches all was fine until the slip road.
I have found info about gear change issues caused by poor chain adjustment, selector position and oil level etc, but nothing like this.
I limped home, had a quick look around the bike all seemed in order. I've since removed the crank case and clutch to have a nose, oil was a bit dirty, and the selector mechanism looks good. Would oil condition have been an issue? Any advise before I drop the engine and split the crank (with the help of a friend) would be very welcome.
Many Thanks Jay

How easy does the gear change lever work - could be clagged up & a bit stiff?

wow, one false neutral and you do all that?
I would have just given it another stamp and carried on - but it sounds like you know what you're doing better than me:smt081

I've found I've not had to look further (thank ****)than drive chain adjustment or gear lever (as punyxpress says) in the past.

All clean and tidy, and shifting nice clicks in to place cleanly just nothing on 3rd.

As someone told me on here, i think it was alpinestar. It could be the worm drive... Investigate that, it worked on my curvy.

Just adjusted the screw and gear selection because so much easier!

Good luck!

I think the OP is saying the rest of the box works fine just no third gear.If thats the case Id drain the oil and look for nasty bits of metal first. If the linkage and clutch are all otherwise fine it is likely to be something inside like the selector or the gears.

Sounds like the same problem I had...there's a thread on it...around 2006 I think...search my posts. Photos and everything...

This dosnt sound like anything to do with the worm drive / clutch adjustment...that normaly manifests itself as difficulty in selecting neutral and slightly notchy gear changes.

This sounds more like something deep within the gearbox...

Yeah sorry guys not clear at the start.
I put it down to false neutral myself on the slip road, but had no 3rd for the rest of the ride home.
Oil was dirty, but no lumps of metal or metallic streaks in it. If something let go in the box, I thought I may have heard a bang or crunch but nothing. The bike was riding fine.

So lets get it clear, it shifts into 3rd fine (presume you can see the detent star has moved to the 3rd position) but no drive?

Thought so, just hoping there was something I'd mist (god only knows what I was hoping for) seems clear somethings let go. Any views on DIY strip, Local mechanics (North Bristol area anyone?) or getting an engine (is k3 different to the later engines?) Money's tight as always, so bikes off the road for a while.

I believe richie had a similar issue with a K3 eating its gearbox.

What I'd do is buy a curvy engine that has eaten its crankshaft and nick the gearbox out of it.

+1 Cost me £50 for a lunched SV engine, although that was broken top end / loss of compression.

I think you should just stick a magnetic drain plug in and forget about 3rd gear.

It's over-rated anyway.

I do my best wheelies in 3rd.
