Ok folks, i know i need to play about with this but how does the preload, compression etc effect the bike over bumps.

for example i know that having soft settings will make the bike more comfortable but is there any downside (appart from comfort) with firmer settings?

only reason im asking is i sometimes get the back wheel feeling a little skittish its fine when pressing on but when going slow it tips in really quickly and just feels a little unsteady sometimes.

Too firm and it can bounce around over bumps.
Too soft can also feel harsh.

When it feels skittish is that when braking, accelerating?

well slightly accelerating i would say. braking is fine and as a rule its good but just every now and again it kinda makes me go woa! not quite sure whats happening. maybe its because when it did it on the sv i could just slide it a bit with the big bars and such. Not really sure.

thinking its either under power and leaning over or slowing right down and me going too slow. think its rider error personally but thourght it might be good to have a play.

Remember the SV will allow you to make more mistakes and usually correct them for you, they are very forgiving as bikes go.
Your Trumpet is a different kettle of fish and might like to give you a nip on the bum just to remind you its not going to forgive you as often ;-)

tis possible..

although im still leaning towards the "i ride like a grandma" solution it would be nice to know what does what really before i start messing about.

Well better to ride like granny and give the girl some respect than ride like an idiot and do something you didn't expect to happen.

If you really need help with your new wheels, you can't go wrong with asking Rictus, after all theres not much he doesn't know about how your bike should work. :-)
