I'm not a car d**k but I quite like the grumble of loud cans :p
So I'm thinking of getting one of these for my golf

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK2-MK3-MK4-3-4-5-UNIVERSAL-BACK-BOX-EXHAUST_W0QQitemZ260560917915QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3caaa4159 b

It looks easy to bolt on and doesn't seem that expensive. But does anyone know if it will make the car fail the emissions test?

I doubt it.

My Nova had an aftermarket exhaust on it, It went through many MOT's with it fitted.

My Golf had a cat back 2" stainless system on it with a pipercross filter on it and that went through many MOT's without failing the emissions test.

Based on my experience you'll be fine.

Is this not a 1.4 golf? Just worth bearing in mind everyone will either laugh or mutter as you go past, all will think you're a **** though.

That's expensive too, the baffles have fallen apart in my back box so I'm getting a new one fitted next week. £40 (inc fitting).

Yeh it's a 1.4 but shhhhh :-$ They don't have the engine size on the back so I can trick people in to thinking it's a 2.0L lol :smt081

Na I don't really care what they think to be honest, as you can see by my sv :p

Where do you get them for £40?

I had a full stainless magnex on my MK2 GTi, it was fantastic, not loud, just meaty in a aston martin kind of way (i wish)
This will probably sound like a can with a hole in it, rough and loud.

I don't want it too loud, just so that I can hear it. I can always bolt the standard box back on can't I ?

Yep you should be able to.

Bear in mind that the one you are looking at is a "universal" one, so it might be a faff to fit or require modifying to fit.

You'd be better off IMHO getting something specific to the model of Golf that you want. It'll cost more, but it'll be easier to fit and it'll more than likely sound better.

Yeah course you can, i'd be surprised if this sounded refined, the better zorst makers spend a fair bit of time and money tuning the sounds i believe, so a cheap one surely cant have the design and testing that a good one would have.
Can always flog it again on fleabay.

Buy a Vw tuning mag or look on vw websites for tuning, there will no doubt be a few companies selling them.

If your going to do something, do it right!

Get a full system so that atleast it makes the car better mechanically, not just louder and there-by annoying

I used to love the old '85 onwards nova sr's, that 1300cc engine was brilliant for the size, would keep up with the XR2 fiesta (1600cc) of that time.

It's cause they weighed nothing!

I had the xr2 of the time, it was my baby :D

Do it the proper boy racer style then.

Get a yard brush and ram it into the back box and knock the baffles in ;) lol

As long as you don't care that's the main thing :)
local garage quoted that.

Yeah they were light, people started putting in astra gte engines in before the nova gte came along, they would wheelspin in 4th.
Seen one in fast car magazine i think that done the standing 1/4 mile in 12 or 13 sec (cant remember exactly), not bad for a nova.
It did have a really bad problem though with traction and torque steer.

Bascially yes, also the SR was reasonable to insure, the GTE wasnt. I prefered the later GSI Nova over the GTE though.

My brother bought a MK1 Astra GTE and transplated the engine, brakes etc into his MK1 Astra 1300S and the left the exterior standard, a proper sleeper that was. It was a huge fun :D

Can't find any specific ones for a mk4. Might just get the ebay one

They will be out there, you're just not looking in the right place.

Try here

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductList.asp?cls=ROAD&grp=RC018&pgrp=R005&tlgrp=R005

This is the MKIV 1.4 & 1.6 specific direct page for Peco. Yes its more than £40 but I always found the PECO exhausts to be OK.

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/appdata2.asp?manf_id=59&manfdesc=Volkswagen&code=PECO_BACKBOX_4&app_id=939439&x=88&y=6

Failing that nip to the shops tomorrow as suggested above and buy one of the VW tuning mags and look at the adverts in the back.

It might only be a 1.4 but the Golf is a bit more classy than a Saxo so dont bolt cheap tat onto it, you'll only make it look sh*te.

Found this one
http://www.octimex.com/Exhaust-Systems-More/Remus/VW/Golf-IV/14l/VW-Golf-IV-14l-55-kW-1998%3D%3E-1x-92x78-mm::34557.html

I've just realised it won't be seen because my exhaust is behind the rear bumper

fizzwheel
09-03-10, 09:57 PM
That looks better. Decent brand as well.

You might find that it will stick out past the bumper though as it'll be designed to do so in order to show it off.

DarrenSV650S
09-03-10, 09:58 PM
hmm that would mean drilling the bumper

I doubt it, they'll more than like have designed the aftermarket pipe you are looking at so that it doesnt foul the bumper.
