An email was sent out today, informing us that one of the medics in our year had been killed yesterday morning when his bicycle collided with a lorry.

I didn't know the fella personally, as our year alone has almost 400people, but I have played footy with him several times and give him the heads up when I see him.

For those who know London Bridge area, this happened at the junction of Snowsfield and Weston Street. I park my bike in an underground parking lot nearby, and use this junction virtually everytime I take my bike out. The roads are quite narrow here, and the views are obstructed by the surrounding buildings. Also the white markings on the road are not the greatest.

I virtually come to a stop when I'm at this junction, even if I have right of way. Why we don't have enough 'STOP' signs around here I really don't know. Perhaps the council might be ar*sed to sort the paint out or put up a stop sign. I don't know the exact cause of the accident, but that junction was always a disaster waiting to happen!

RIP.

Just found an article regarding this here, http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23813998-medical-student-cyclist-killed-in-collision-with-tipper-truck.do

"A medical student was crushed to death in a collision with a tipper truck near London Bridge (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/related-804-london-bridge.do).

Witnesses said the victim, who was in his early twenties, was a fourth-year medical student at King's College (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/related-2406-kings-college.do) and was on his way to Guy's Hospital when the accident happened shortly before 10am yesterday.

The man was riding across the junction of Weston Street and Snowsfields when he was hit by the lorry.

His death came on the day that Boris Johnson (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/related-2285-boris-johnson.do) unveiled his Cycle Safety Action Plan, in which the Mayor pledged to reduce the number of serious cycling accidents, particularly those involving heavy goods vehicles.

Witnesses said the cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was killed instantly when he was hit by the lorry.

Paul Nicholas, landlord of the nearby Rose pub, said: "It was such a horrible thing The lorry continued down the street but then stopped. It's possible the driver never even saw the cyclist."

(http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/related-11000-metropolitan-police-authority.do)Scotland Yard (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/related-11000-metropolitan-police-authority.do) said the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

Perhaps best keep your assumptions to yourself. It's was a give way and not a red light.

I know that being objective isn't exactly fashionable, but without more information it's pointless to speculate on whose fault it was. We simply don't know the details of what happened.

So let's just accept that it's a crap time for the friends and family of the deceased and refrain from pointing fingers without clear justification.

RIP, but he probably just jumped a red light anyway - harsh comment on my behalf, I know, but s.hit happens!

I see cyclists jumping red lights all the time in London, so it's bound to happen!

Cyclists jumping red lights annoy me...

Just a little bit.

Not the time or the place.

@ Mr_Chin

I won't quote your comment, just keep what you said in mind next time you, or someone you know is injured (or worse) on a motorbike. I'm sure many non-bikers will say something along the lines of, "It's bound to be the bikers fault, probably speeding, I see them do that all the time."

It's a very small-minded, idiotic comment on your part.

Far too many assumptions (i.e. 1) and a completely unnecessary and pointless post.

RIP Mr Cyclist, and spare a thought for the lorry driver, too, eh?

Before you start flaming people-----did he or did he not jump the give way sign?
If he did it was his fault,if the lorry jumped it it was the lorry drivers fault.
I have driven artics in London for 20 years and push bikes seem to have a complete disregard for the rules of the road so it would not surprise me if it was his own fault.
Lorry drivers are no angels and if it was his fault he will have the book thrown at him, deservidly.
I have been involved in accidents, being tail ended because I have had to make an emergency stop to avoid hitting cyclist riding over pedestrian crossings and jumping lights------------what happens, you have the hassle and the farkin cyclist ****es off.
