View Full Version : Looks like it could be bye to the SV hello to a 750 Gixxer...eek!

Following on from my recent thread on p/ex values of my 09 SV Sport I was pleasantly surprised on a visit to the local dealers to be offered more than expected and with a healthy discount on a new model GSXR 750 I took the tentative steps towards purchasing it!!!

What I mean by that is I cannot actually take the bike until mid-May due to my 1st years insurance not being up until then and the stooopid insurance quotes without a full yrs NCB (which I guess is obvious for a big powerful sports bike  )

Anyway am I a complete loon is my question, having wanted a Fireblade (or something of equal size) for 20+ years (with a near 18 year gap since last owning a bike) I bought the SV last May as my intro back to biking and have loved it since, however the lure of a BIG bike will not go away and when stepping into the showroom today for a look at both the blue/white and the new 'BROWN' version I took one look at the 'BROWN' one and loved it, the reason for my overstatement of its colour is it has to be seen in the flesh to realise just how nice the colour is (well at least I think so)

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4013/4426313607_b512ef0003_o.jpg
Anyway I am hoping that the kind dealer will be able to move ahead with the sale and keep hold of the new bike until May (means I will have to part with my SV from beginning of April though :-({|=) but as am on hols for 2 weeks in April wont seem to bad.

So back to the question, do I need my head testing for changing to the Gixxer or is it the best thing I could ever do :smt049

I think that colour is beautiful, as is the bike, have you tested it?

nictry

The colour is soooooo much better in the flesh too, looks almost black then as you get closer it is like a pearlescent shimmering brown (gosh I sound sad)

And no, haven't tested it as they dont get a demo in until the end of March (but will be out on it as soon as it arrives :) )

No I don't think your mad or loon as you put it ;) but I am very very jealous of you, the power difference will be massive.

It's exactly the same as the 08 and 09 750s aside from the cosmetics, why don't you test ride an 08/09 model?

MCN overall verdict
New for 2008, the K8 is the latest incarnation of the giant-killing Suzuki GSX-R750. With only minor tweaks for this year and a facelift, the 175mph K8 is now the smoothest and most refined GSX-R750 ever. Suzuki say it has the same claimed crank power and torque as the K6/K7 model (150bhp/64ftlb), but during MCN’s Road Test it made a staggering 133bhp at the rear wheel on our dyno. That’s 3bhp more than a 2002 R1 (it’s 3mph faster too) and 6bhp more than the old 954cc FireBlade. The GSX-R750 is still the perfect all-round sportsbike, user-friendly, fast and fun.

That was the plan but they dont have a 750 available (until the 2010 demo model comes in)

Having gone from an SV to a GSXR 750. Ableit a K5 one. IMHO no you are not bonkers. I love mine to bits. It does everything so much better than the SV ever does. You wont look back.

That's good to hear, I still work on the basis that a bike is only as mad as the rider using it, so I hope that I will just be able to enjoy the new found power, handling etc. when I want to and the rest of the time I will just be able to enjoy riding sensibly a great looking bike!

It really does depend how you ride it. If you keep it below 7000rpm its quite docile. Go above that and it starts to get fun. Go above 1000rpm and then its mental.

Just treat the throttle with respect till you've got used to it, mind you if you are buying new, you'll have to run it in anyway which will give you time to get used to it.

Enjoy !

awesome bike, not sure on the colour may have to see for myself when they have one at crescent suzuki.

if i could afford i would have bought a k6/k7 instead of a 2000 but i dont think ur bonkers, it would prob have been a bit mad to buy the 1000 though.

I agree and thats why I went over to see it (they are like gold dust in terms of availability at the moment!) but when I rode over this morning I didnt even realise it was the one sitting in the window as it looked black but when you are up very close it shimmers with the golden brown look.

My OH said it looked gross in the pictures and is not convinced at the moment but I did tell her wait and see before you pass judgement :)

OK, so the deal is done, deposit paid, test ride arranged for as soon as the new one arrives, registered March 31 (to get the 2% finance deal) and pick up mid May when the 1yrs NCB is completed

Now the only thing is to not try and get too excited about going to pick it up :)

Congrats, you will enjoy it, just need to get that cat off for a proper sound. Even when I switched the end can on mine it sounded a bit high pitched and wheezy, so I got a full system and never looked back! Just get one right away and don't waste money on only a slip on!

Argggh, no don't tempt me with add ons and conversions already, I need to ease myself in gently even if it is a bit squealy with the standard kit, now mid way through the summer, that could be a whole different story :smt077

Sweet bike buddy and looks better in the flesh.

Don't think your mad. Go with your heart not your head lol. I jumped from a SV650S to a GSXR K8 Thou after test riding her.

As fizzy says below 7000 it just plods along. Anything above that and things get interesting

Enjoy buddy ;)

Well after a few more weeks and 510 miles on the odo I can honestly say it is a fantastic bike, love the power, control, handling and looks, have destickered it completely now (those fairing labels are a total nightmare!!) added some black adjustable levers, CF heatguard and a yoshi filler cap just to give it a bit of individuality (although I think there are only a few brown ones in the UK anyway so I guess that keeps it individual enough :)

Just going to get the rearsets and pillion pegs powdercoated black at the first service and that will be it for the mods for now, the exhaust will just have to wait a while :)

:) just booked 1st service for week after next as should have topped 600 miles by then (especially with this weather  )

Comfort is fine, I did a 99 mile run yesterday and although I ached a bit it wasnt too bad at all, much better since I changed the levers and adjusted them to suit my riding style (I am 6ft 2 so needed to tip the levers down a bit and my wrists have stopped aching completely now)

Pillion is fine although my OH says she feels quite high up compared to the SV, oh and she nearly dug through my ribs when I opened it up for the first time the other day and she nearly went off the back ;) oh and there is no grabrail which she doesnt like much either!

nik_nunez
22-05-10, 05:45 PM
yeah they set the clutch lever far to high, mine is pushed all the way forward now, maybe a bit to far as my hand hits the fairing on full left lock

are the fairings the same flecked paint or just the tank?

get some love handles for the mrs to grab onto

nictry
22-05-10, 08:04 PM
No, the whole bike is that metallic flecked paintwork, really does look nice especially in the sunshine :)

Keep suggesting the love handles but she doesnt fancy it, she just knows she needs to hold on tighter from now on ;)

Aah, that's better, the first pic looked aubergine. As long as you don't mind it looking like a 70's bordello every other photo I'm sure you'll love it's anodyne IL4 aesthetic.

mandy said the same with the gsxr .. ours was a K4 so bit bigger seat ..

but.

get a tribo seat none slip cover for the pillion seat .. about £12
get some "love handles" to go around your waist for OH to hold on to.. £20.

will make your OH feel so much comfier and stable.

enjoy the bike..ride safe and respect the power

I just ordered one of the tribo seats so will see how she gets on with that. I did suggest the loverhandles but she didnt like that idea much so maybe the lack of slipping aboout so much and me promising not to take it over 7k on the revs might keep her happy ;)

cool..

some pillions lean round and put their hands on the tank dont they??

did you see moto gp yesterday and the presenter lady went pillion.. they had a grab handle on the tank that utilises the petrol cap fittings.

Funny enough that is exactly what she does, hand on the tank when slowing down and one hand on the rear end of the bike when accelerating, having not been pillion for many years I do get what she is saying though as the little grab handle on the seat wouldnt inspire me with much confidence on a powerful bike and equally crushing the nuts of the rider when sliding forward on braking isnt really too nice either :smt103

Tyres are still 36/42 for 2 up

Suspension I need to get sorted for me 1st, being done at 1st service in a week or so, then will look at what needs changing for 2 up riding :)

ah see me never allowed out on me own now.. so my tyres and suspension always stay the same - pillion settings..

I expect once you got it how you need it for solo then you can note that then click around with it to your hearts content until you get the right settings away from your solo setttings then easy peasy to change it up and down

Oh, you didnt get the knack then, should have gone out the first time 2 up and 'accidently' opened it up a little like I did (unintentionally honestly) and now I have to twist her arm to get her on the back ;)

I still can't get my head around other people doing your suspension for you.
Your ass is on seat, you need to twiddle adjusters. Guy in shop does not ride your bike!

Set sag, play with damping. When you go 2 up increase rear preload and comp :)
