want a tyre similar to my storms something for fast road, good in the wet and on a long journey, but im thinking i will prob need something softer.

anyone else got any ideas?

i keep hearing Michelin Pilot Power 2CT and at the moment i have perelli diablo corsa 3s on it with about 1000miles left on the rear.

If you like storms put storms on it. Just because you have a sports bike, doesnt mean you have to run sticky soft rubber on it. You'll get better life and better cold wet grip out of a sport touring tyre like the Avon Storm. I'm running Metzler Z6's on my GSXR at the moment. Plenty enough grip from them for my style of riding they dont lack far behind the Corsa III's I had on it before TBH.

Pilot Power 2CT and Corsa III's are very good. But they wont give you a long tyre life like the storms will and your GSXR will be harder on tyres than your SV was. I've used both and the Corsa III heats better and gives better feedback but the sharper profile means it turns in faster and is a little twitchier than the Pilot Power 2CT, but the 2CT isnt as good in the wet or cold and can be a bit lacking in rider feedback, but the profile is rounder and its a little slower to turn and more stable. The 2CT I had on the rear of my GSXR was the only tyre that I felt confident enough in to completely remove my rear chicken strips.

Good morning all.

As Fizz says Pilot powers are pretty good, but lack a little in the wet.

You could always try Avon Vipers, I have always received good feedback on them from customers. Obviously being a more sports orientated tyre, they wont last as long as the Storms, but, they offer good all round performance, & somewhat increased grip over the Storms when pushed.

Cheers.

i have been looking at the Avon Viper 2 Sports, and im definetly considering them, can i have a vp2 sport on the back and corsa 3 on the front or is it just worth getting both tyres changed at the same time?

cheers.

Depends on funds.
Advantage of having both same is you are learning a new bike, so better in that respect to have them matched.
If you are used to the bike you can fit mismatched pairs because you know what to expect and can get used to any weirdness.

Corsa 3 is a race scrub one right?

I use Pirreli Diablo Rosso on my GSXR and prefer them over the Corsa that were originally on when I got the bike as they warm up far quicker and are more suitable for wet.cold commutes. Seem to be far harder wearing as well.

i have a few quid to spare as i have pretty much sold the sv now.

yeah what does that actually mean, someone has used it on track and put it through one heat cycle?

tyre looks pretty messed up but im gonna ride it a see whats its like. matey reckoned it had about a 1000miles left but ill prob change it sooner.

Who knows how many heat cycles. Race scrub just means you bought them secondhand at track...

That is not too important for the road. What is important is track compounds have a much higher operating temp and you have to ride pretty fast to get them up to temperature and they are not particularly good in the wet.

Imagine in wet, rear (storm 2 or whatever) will feel great... then front may wash out and down you go.

I'd be inclined to agree with Chris on a new bike that you dont know, then go for a matched pair.

I tend to run matched pairs anyway regardless but thats just the way I prefer to do things. I dont know if I would want to run different manufacturers tyres on the front / rear of my bike.

Thing which I think may give you problems (head sort, not physical) is race supercorsa is very pointy profile, which is great, they tip in really fast and stick like s*** to a blanket leant over. But if you've got a flatter profiled ST tyre or a sport tyre on the back then it could feel quite odd.

Ive got the viper sports and am currently sliding the rear of my bike all over the place on my way to work. Its not fun :(

I have viper sports on my SV and they're fine, I'm not sure my slides are to do with the tyre or the road surface, prob the second, but it seems to gently let go rather than an OMG slip.

I got Storms on the R6 atm no problems amazing tyre (i use my bike every day. If i was a Sunday rider i may go for something a little stickier as Sunday riders are generally rubbish)

run!

Why run? Just walk in the rain and they'll all fall over!

edging towards the storms then, i really liked them on the SV, never felt like they were gonna give way, i havent quite got to the edge of them on the SV so maybe i run them as my first set on the 750, see how they go, then if necessary get some VP2s next.

I've done some fairly retarded things on the storm STs and I'm not dead. Great tyres.

You'll be able to seriously shift before you get near the limits of them, the proportion of riders with stickysticky tyres compared to the number who actually use the stickyness is ridiculously small...

same mate, least ill be on a tyre i have faith in.

AndyBrad

i think thats the issue faith is a big ask.

Just out of curiosity i was having a convo with a guy at work who was arguingthat supersports tyers warm up faster than sports touring and would be better for my 5 mile commute.

Your thourghts?

I use a super sticky tyre on my bike.

I know its a trade off with mileage but I prefer the grip (that said, I'm getting about 7k out of the rear so far).
They do warm up really quickly but as has been said, it's all about having confidence in your tyres.

Hard to tell i suspect SS will take longer at road speeds, Sport touring is best for road riding imho.

BS. You can warm tyres up to "nugget" level on track in 3 laps. But no way can you do that on the road.

7k?!? What tyre?

Conti sport attacks.

The only problem with them was that hammering down the motorway most fridays in the summer wore the middle down quite quick :(

Oh right I thought you meant like chewing gum sticky, supercorsa SC2 rear lasted me under 2k.

Couple of hundred mile round the lanes and the Corsa will look normal, mine can look a bit scrubbed at times due to the soft outer compound on hard chipped roads

fizzwheel

Agree with Dicky Ticker, that Corsa has done a track day and got hot and thats why it looks like that.

I'd also say although its hard to guess from the pictures that it has a reasonable amount of life left in it. Unless the profile has gone square personally I'd be inclined not to change it just yet. I found when I had them on my GSXR that they actually worked quite well in the rain as well as the dry.

Mej
21-03-10, 08:38 PM
yeah had no problem with the corsa 3 today, it was alright in the wet yesterday as well, but today it was impressive, it grips well and they are staring to look a bit more normal now.

Mej
05-04-10, 03:22 PM
So far the corsa 3 has been good, but it only has about 200-300 miles on it now. So it looks like im gonna go with the storms.

Only thing i have noticed is that not alot of people seem to have them on the SS and Superbikes, i used to push them failry hard on the sv and they were always good, so i cant see how they are gonna be any different on the 750. Are they more likley to slip out riding hard in the dry as opposed to a Corsa III for instance?

yorkie_chris
05-04-10, 03:26 PM
Yes because you're putting more power down.

Mej
05-04-10, 03:29 PM
oh well im gonna get them anyway, the bloke at the garage said he had a guy working there who ran them on his zxr12 which has a fair bit more power than my 750 so ill give them a try and ill just have to be a bit more gentle with the throttle.

yorkie_chris
05-04-10, 03:33 PM
Exactly, they'll give you loads of warning before they slide anyway.
