I got a week's notice today. 17 installers and 4 surveyors got the same thing.
2010 has started off really crap, it has got to get better than this.

Cheers, I'm a cavitywall and loft insulation surveyor. Prior to that I was a sales rep and mechanic in the bike trade for donkey's years - the surveying was a new thing to me after I came out of semi-retirement, I'd only been doing it a year but loved it.

Good luck with finding something quickly. Could you go self-employed?

Not really, the firm I'm with is one of the larger independents in this field, there's no-one else to go to except for the big players and they're all outside of this area

You could do the training to become a HIP surveyor?
(Home Information Pack...not judging if someone needs a plazzy hip)

I have considered that, it's money for old rope too

So if there's 21 of you out of work, couldn't you all start a rival company and take business away from your former employer?

Exactamundo my dear friend.
We had some dozy old bint come to ours to do the HIP assessment...I learned more in 18 months on a YTS (22 yrs ago) than she had learned yet she was getting Brewsters for coming out to count how many energy saving light bulbs we had
Even had to show her the cavity in the walls to prove we had cavity wall insulation...I mean FFS!?!

CWI is one thing they never check for, all they have to do is drill a small hole in the mortar and have a peek in with a torch or poke a rod in there. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of HIP surveys done where they've put 'unknown' on for CWI. I've been to no end of houses where the survey has said it doesn't have any, but I've found it within 2 minutes of arriving at the property by simply drilling a hole on each elevation.
I've even heard of HIP surveyors assessing loft insualtion without even opening the loft hatch. These people may as well do 'drive-by' surveys where they don't even get out of the car.
