View Full Version : Recommend me a dream car

Stu

I'm hoping to have some money to waste on a car. I don't at the moment hence it's a dream.
Can't think of any use for it right now so not looking to spend too much and importantly want to keep the costs down eg tax, so if it's pre 1/3/01 reg car it needs to be less than 1549cc, after March 01, up to a band F (150g/km).
Needs to have at least 4 seats
Would like something interesting such as Puma 1.4, erm can't think of anything else

thinking around the £1,000 mark

Doesn't interest me, this is for driving on the road only so I don't see how it would be enjoyable on the road
was thinking more sporty or pretence of being sporty given the cost & economy restrictions

Doubt it, they'll be to old to qualify for the low tax band. Or if it is it wont be very sporty to drive. Stay away from 1.4 Golfs, its a heavy car and it wont have any performance.

You might find a MKII or MKIII GTI for a grand, personally I'd be looking for a an older 3 series BMW...

It says in the advert "Cooling fan does not work"

Which probably means its overheated and popped its head gasket. If it is a 1.4 Turbo they have an awful reputation for getting to hot and like Viney says personally I wouldnt touch it with a bargepole.

-Ralph-
23-03-10, 02:27 PM
How big do the back seats need to be? A puma doesn't have much in the way of back seats

Nissan ZX300 or SX200
Alfa Romeo GTV

Not very exciting, but then neither's a Puma...

Ford Cougar
Megane Coupe (I had one, leather, electric everything, twas a great car)
406 Coupe
Fiat Coupe
Hyundai Coupe (as per the Megane)
BMW 3 Series Coupe
Mazda MX3 or MX6
Honda Prelude
Toyota Celica
MB CE Class (and pretend your name's Patrick Swayze and your a martial arts expert! ;) )

You'd need to bust you road tax budget for most of these though. Megane, Hyundai both came in a 1.6, some of the other did too, but without going for a bl00dy Tigra, I don't know what else you'll get in a 1.4

Honda did the Civic Coupe in a 1.5 engine called the LSi.

A mate had a Std 5, and i think he had somehwere int he region of 8 in 4 years!! I just wouldnt touch a GTT ever. They were great when they were new and a firend had a 280hp one and his brother had a 1.7 engined T running nos...that was meantal for about 15 minutes before it went bang whilst taking it for a test drive after he finished it!

Looking around i couldnt find any golfs in the list for under a grand. The MR2 idea is quite good. My mate terry had one, and it was a reet laff. Not got the 4 seats your after though. How about a good old dependable Fiesta? Get a 1.4 one of them.

Nope I don't think so.

Depends what you're after really something that's nice to drive/sporty-ish or cheap tax

Cheap tax I would say a Suzuki Alto like kitkat has, rubbish to drive but cheap to run with only £35 tax and tyres will only cost you about £20 each.

Other than that I reckon you'll have to bust your tax budget

Its a Ford Fiesta with a different bodyshell on it IIRC. So probably not. I suspect it suffers from an image problem. Personally I wouldnt buy one, but if you like it then why not.

Stu what do you want. Do you want something fun to drive or do you want something cheap to run, because in my experience its difficult to find something that'll meet both requirements especially on your budget.

No, I suspect the people slating it have never driven one...

It is a fantastic little car, the 1.7 is it should be mentioned much better, same mpg but much quicker.

Lets put it another way, the 1.4 Puma is as fast 0-60 as a 2l mondeo (and same with the cougar) , will do a real 118mph flat out and is ace fun to drive.

We had one for (quite a few) years, genuinely sorry to see it go, one of few small cars that I actually liked to drive.

I had three 2.0 Sport Imprezas as company cars in 97/98, they are actually very good cars and that would be well worth a grand of anyone's money if it's straight and has some kind of service history.

My bosses both had Impreza Turbos, so I wasn't allowed one, but I did have a full turbo interior and bodykit with gold Speedline alloys that were swopped from old car to new car as we got them

I am currently driving a 1.3 turbodiesel Astravan that has recorded a top speed of 121mph on my Garmin satnav (on private roads officer). Modern diesels can also be fun to drive, as I found out in my mate's 150bhp Golf TDi

What's the big deal about paying a bit more road tax and getting a car you'll enjoy driving, rather than being a skinflint and ending up with a car you'll despise and not care for because of it.

Pay an extra 100 quid a year in tax and enjoy it if you really have to have a car. It's not like 100 quid spread over a year will break anyone's bank, even the mouth breathing, oxygen thief dole bludgers could afford that.

Lozzo
24-03-10, 12:10 AM
Bl00dy enthusiasts. They were about 800 quid when I was 17!

Mini Cooper S 1071 and 1275s were about 70 to 80 quid when I was a teenager. They were about as popular as 1.4 Mk4 Escorts are now. I had about 4 of them on the trot and scrapped every one of them when the MOT ran out.

fastdruid
24-03-10, 12:10 AM
Trouble is with a diesel is that they weigh more than petrol (something like 40Kg+ more) and that ruins the handling/balance.

Small diesels aren't any more economical, worse CO2 and are way slower than their equivalent petrol equivalents.

All in all there is very little good to be said for small diesels.

I only use my little runaround as a convenience for occasional journeys and trips a mile up the road to the supermarket. So I probably don't 'need' a 2.8lt 7 series, but it is so comfy and smooth and a pleasure to drive. And I even got Stuart to vacuum it on Friday as we were giving our guest of honour (Treacle) a lift into town. Teh again, I don't 'need' 25 handbags either - but I am a woman. ;)

You are in a similar situation to me Stu - now the weather is improving my 1998 BMW 316i Compact will probably just sit on the drive for most of the summer. I have tried to think of things to replace it that will be fun to drive and in the low tax bracket and nothing springs to mind. I did think about one of these (http://www.ciao.co.uk/Honda_Civic_1_8__Review_5386343) as you get an 8000rpm red line in a fairly nice package and they can be had for a grand or thereabouts - decided it wasn't worth it though - the BMW is as reliable as a Swiss watch and can do 40mpg on a run and even though its a slow 1.6 all the fun can be had on wet empty roundabouts :D

fastdruid
24-03-10, 01:17 PM
3 series is *way* too heavy, only advantage is its rwd, you need a 318 to nearly be as fast as the 1.4 puma!

316 is almost criminally slow.

Well it is a bit slow - but thats why I have a bike :p Also I only paid £800 for it and when you are dirt scratching for cars (and have little mechanical knowledge) its best to take something reliable - which my little BMW has been.

24-03-10, 01:35 PM
IMO Fords are more reliable than BMW and if they *do* fail they don't cost the earth to fix. Only thing that 'failed' in 5 years of the having the puma was it needed a new clutch and a new back box.

Of course the other side of that coin is that we got it at ~3 years old and sold it at ~8, get one now and the best you can hope for is ~9 years old and while it *should* be fine it depends on how its been treated previously. Plus side is that being based on the fiesta is that parts are cheap and plentiful.

I still want one of these versions though :)

Bit of a sweeping statement there but I know what you are getting at. IMO its all about condition and history when a car reaches a certain age - my BMW was one family owned from nearly new and had a full BMW service history when I bought it in 2008 - but I bet there are plenty of similar cars out there with a sketchy past that could be a whole heap of trouble - same with Fords or any other make really.

I like the RX-8, it reminds me of big sporty cars of old like the Calibra. The four seats is great, and it goes like nobody's business if you want it to. Alas, it guzzles fuel too, and I just couldn't find a comfortable driving position in it.

Anyway, to Stu: Ford Cougar (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1481679.htm)? Like the Puma but a bit more masculine!

Baby forces sale my **** !!! :D .......... its a perfect family car ..... its the petrol and oil prices that force sale !!! :D

I nearly bought one years ago ... and no offence .... but they are a bit .... urm ..... well ..... naff inside !!

Not very good for short journeys, although tbh is more actually house move & finances forces sale than the baby. Plus to put the baby in the back means you have to open the front doors all the way, not very practical in a tight space. She's considering a Golf V6 4Motion as a replacement.

I like the inside tbh, far better than for example the 3 series. Each to their own though.

Had a quick look for them & they were being sold for between £2K for crashed ones to £7K. plus it would be too upsetting.

A friend had a chavved up Lupo GTI with coilovers, it was indeed very very interesting to drive, I somewhat enjoyed it. They are a bit pricey though, his went for £3500.
