I want to start getting some on track experiance.

I want a bike I can afford to insure, so I can ride to and from trackdays. (I'm 20 and so insurance can be hefty)

I also don't want to pay through the roof for a bike.

Just interested if there are any bikes that may help me, or any that me hinder progress.

And if you are wondering why I want a second bike for trackdays - I want to be doing quite a few, with a view to getting into racing. I have a K9 Sv that I don't really want to have to pay out to repair when I drop it, I'd rather something I'm happy to buy whatever colour fairings pop up on ebay for as cheap as just to keep it going.

Why not get a slightly older SV? That way you could even swop bits between the bikes if you wanted to? (like the number plate when you want to ride to the circuit.....I really didn't say that honestly...) Only downside is thanks to Minitwins SV's are quite pricey. Failing that I'd go for an older SS600, but that might sting you on insurance.

Get an older 600 then of some sort, they can be had cheaply in track fairings, especially old steel CBR600s. Not really up to speed on which make/models to go for but it's a start.

Getting a road legal one may be a little trickier/pricier. I'm sure some more good advice will soon follow.

What happened to the 400 you had?

That has gone to ArtyLady's son. To be honest, that bike is far too small for me, and I'd have no chance of managing a track day after riding to a track on that.

I just got a quote on a GSXR600 (97 model) for £400 which is half what i'm paying for FC on my SV, so that looks alright.

As far as SVs go, I'd love a blue/black fully faired curvy. The prices are just phenomenal for such an old bike! Saw one on ebay for £2,100 which is well out of my budget for something I'm happy to push to the limit.

Everyone suggests steelies, which I think is boring!

Personally, I'd be looking at something like this:

Honda Hornet! £1000-£1200 for a really good one and cheap to insure.

... and as fast as everything else on the track!

Also cheap to repair if you happen to stack it!

go for the 2000 model that has a 17 inch front wheel for good track rubber.

Can you not add the track bike to your existing policy?

I'd leave SVs alone. Got the 1st bike tag on them which keeps prices up. (Unless a bargain comes along) SRAD 6s are starting to get hit with the ugly tag but may have had a hard life?

I bought mine because it was cheap, they handle well enough on stock suspension to keep up in fast group and spares are plentiful, as are race items if desired (full BB Plastics fairing is £160 quid and they fit properly)

Try finding spares and track fairings. They are also heavy and ponderous and a bit uninspiring as 750s go. If that one still had all the K goodies it would be a good bke, but it's been robbed of anything that makes it worth buying. It's just a J with a single seat unit and the J was the lowest powered ZXR750 made

Same again, an unpopular model to start with that was only made for a couple of years so parts aren't that common. If you're going to buy a ZX6R get a later G or J model that you can get bits for.
