So as not to derail the other thread, I was just wondering, would you give up your day job to become the busa cop, paid say something like £30K a year, force pension etc etc, with the express job description of riding a busa legally whilst secretly following other bikers possibly at speeds over the speed limit? Is it too dangerous for you? Is it the most fun paid job in the world? Just wondering...

That job is already taken is Essex, but I'd take any job at the moment....

I'd do it, only problem is don't you have to do about 10 years of various other police roles before you'd get the chance?!

I'd be a bit against nicking people for safe speeds too, so I might not get too many results, and would probably end up being fired...

These jobs are never execting as they sound, riding the bike is only one of the parts of the job. Besides what would would the working hours be like? How long would the tenure be? I bet you could imagine in the summer it would be on most w/ends thats enough to put me off.

There are more interesting things out there to do, but I guess doing it for year wouldn't be so bad.

In the summer I'd have to take it to track days...y'know, to nick the people riding dangerously to/from it (everyone seems to give it a few more beans!!) ;)

I'd have to take it on track to fit in (undercover 'n all).

Yeah, all the training you'd get to make you a good rider and I've heard (could be tripe) that they have to keep passing tests to show they are at a certain skill level, and I've also heard the bit about having to have previous service before gettin gthe cool job like this. Stands to reason I think.

The only prob would come if you are asked/leaned on to start goading people into riding fast just so you can nick em.

Having said that, if you do get goaded into something like that from a stranger on a bike/in a car then you should probably get done, got to be easier to pull in and let them go... Controversial??

No

Long day on a bike, every single day.
Too much road riding as an officer, not so much fun at the weekends.
You'll get a rep round your area for being a c**t, so if you do go out at weekends no-one will talk to you.
Weather, not so much fun when its bucketing down with rain, and you've got an 8 hour shift of riding in front of you.

It gets tedious riding every day to work anyway, let alone doing it whilst at work. You'd never really want to go home and go out for a "blat" either becuase your old bill and if you got pulled your really screwed (terms of job etc).

So no, it sounds fun, but i'd far rather be doing it in the car.

I think you'd end up splattering it somewhere. Everyone makes mistakes, and its easy to get complacent. Someone who rides fast day in day out is more likely to be riding nearer the limits, and when things go wrong, they can go wrong in a hurry. It's easy enough to misjudge traction on a very wet day on something a lot smaller and lighter than a busa.

You could always drop the engine in a Smart Coupe and have the best of both worlds

Hmm, not as simple as it sounds.

Shedloads of paperwork, long shifts on the bike when the weather's crap and pedboys you can't nick because you're after bigger fish. So, not all good.

On the other hand, I met a few of the local traffic cops on my Bikesafe day a few weeks ago and they're an all right bunch. Every job has some people with their heads stuck where the sun doesn't shine, but the ones I met would be a good laugh to work with.

I guess the only thing that would stop me is the anti-social hours.

I voted yes, obviously I would love to ride a bike for a living.

However, I would probably be in the job for about a month before being transferred for 'to much use of discretion'

There are so many other roles in the police I would rather do the more I think about it.

Someone said somewhere on here that they would hope whoever rides the Busa would be a human first, then a biker, then a copper..... Unfortunately although that is the ideal order of events the pool of people who fit that criteria is getting smaller. Although mostly still human they now tend to be coppers who have learnt to ride a bike, rather than bikers who happen to be coppers, and there is a subtle difference when it comes to commitment and skill levels.

They always need to look at long term succession planning, 10-15 years should give you time to qualify and apply, mind you the ways things are going it will probably be considered to dangerous to actually go out on patrol by then....

I think it would be a rubbish job...but then I hate traffic work. Much rather stick to biking in my sparetime than having to do it day in, day out at work!

lol how is it that none of the cops on here actually want this job!

No thanks...

Very few end up liking what they do for work enough to do it for fun on the weekends.
