View Full Version : SV650 electrical starting problem
Hi, went to start my sv650s (K3) and it tried to turn over then just died. When i tried to start it again and turned the key on again there was no power to the speedo, lights or anything electrical.
The bike wont turn over on the starter swith either. Tested the battery and it had plenty of volts in it (12v), but when the key was turned to park the side lights turned on very slowly and dimly....
Changed the ECU and that hasnt fixed the problem.... Has anyone else had the same problem or has anyone got any ideas.
Any reply's would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like the bettery is forked, how old is it? just because it shows 12v don't mean its got enough amps to turn it over.
When did you last use it?

IIRC I was told that a bike battery is actually supposed to be more than 12V like up towards 13V somewhere. fabz have you got a charger? Leave on charge overnight and see if that solves all your problems. Does definitely sound like a battery issue.
the battery was reading 11.9v when it was tested, just thought that because the side lights came on when in park the battery would be ok... When out for a 10 minute ride on it after it had been in a heated garage over winter, then left it for 3 hours, went to start it after that then nothing....

Batteries slowly lose their charge, even when you don't use them. If you leave them discharged long enough the lead sulphate crystallises out and they're completely f*****.
Sounds like yours had enough charge to start the bike once but after ten minutes it hadn't recharged enough to do it a second time. You could put it on charge overnight and see how it goes, but I'd make sure your AA membership is up to date.
If you're going to leave your bike over the winter you probably want to leave the battery connected to a float charger like the Optimate. Lots of folks install a socket under the seat to avoid rummaging in the battery box every time.
Keith.
had charged it over winter a couple of times to avoid the problem with a trickle flow, have put the battery on over night to charge and will see in the morning if anythings happened.
Thanks for your help

hey guys, had been charging the battery over night and tried it in the morning and still nothing.... Swapped the battery for another and still nothing.... Going to have to look at the electric diagram in the manual and follow it around to try and find the problem:(:(

nothing electrical is working? start with the main 30a fuse thats where the positiive terminal goes first.
been round all of the fuses and may have narrowed it down to the ignition switch, so going to get a spare one and connect it up to see if that solves the problem...

Oh, lights etc etc are working then.
nope, no lights (only light up in park), no display, battery is fully charged, all the fuses are ok... wont turn over, park lights are the only things that work, changed the ecu, still NOTHING ahhhhh:confused::confused:

And its the 30a green fuse you have checked not just the ones under the seat?
You got a multimeter, check for power at the cut off switch.
my bike had lots of issues when i got it, the alarm was a big problem, but the other big problem was the green conector block that conects the ingition baral to the main loom was burnt out! shaking the head stock temparaly solved the problem but would cut out on me going down the road!! ive cut the block out now and never had a problem with it since HTH
