Without googling it, who knows what liquorice is made from?
Maybe it's just me, but I had no idea what it actually was, even though I've eaten it for years

You can buy the root pieces to chew. Tastes like poo though, I don't like the stuff!

It's an Indian Herb and proper Liquorice is made from pure extract, but most of the stuff you buy as sweets is made using sugars and star anise or aniseed extract for flavouring, with black food colouring.
