I'm such an idiot...

Was round my mates last night, a couple of 'em were in the hottub. Anyways, I left my iphone on the table indoors and was chilling next to 'em. My jeans got soaked though, and I put my phone in the jeans pocket on the way home.

Now its just acting up. The positive is that it still works kinda - phone calls seem to cut randomly though and a few other things.

I put a hair dryer to the iphone headphone jack and usb slot. It's now sitting in a bag of rice with the hope it will withdraw some more moisture.

There is water droplets behind the camera lens which is worrying. Anybody have any other tips/suggestions for phones that get wet, would be much appreciated. Sadly I'm uninsured. not good:(

Someone on another forum said that the best thing is to soak it in pure alcohol. That drives out the water and, apparently, doesn't damage the electronics. If you don't dare try that, or don't have pure alcohol, then the rice is the next best thing.

Just to warn you, iPhones have a moisture sensor inside. If you send it back for repair, then Apple will know that it's been soaked and may well refuse to fix it under warranty.

Most phones have that sensor now.

I would just switch it off and leave it in the bag of rice for 24 hours. I hope you have it insured?

Isnt advisable to eat it; if you insist, have chips instead.

Yeh, I missed the last sentence, so shoot me?!?!:smt019:smt072(thats you shooting me btw.)

I think its a bit ridiculous to be honest that so much moisture has got into it through you putting it in your pocket. I could understand if you said you dropped it in the hot tub but just from a pair of wet jeans?

thanks for the tips. Defo not gutsy enough to try the alcohol method though.

I could perhaps live without a camera I suppose, and hopefully it'll the other malfunctions will sort themselves out as the rice soaks it up good. Worst case scenario, I'm sure there are specialist non apple repair services for phones (hopefully)!

na I think I'm quite lucky in that there isn't soo much moisture. Otherwise it probably wouldn't turn on, let alone the little malfunctions.

The jeans were drenched, and the phone went into the pocket shortly after (yeh I'm a tit). I thought nothing of it, but lesson learnt I suppose.

just a thought, have you removed the back of the phone ? it could be holding the water in

:smt019bad karma indeed!! lol

yeeh its new alright. I used to have insurance on phones, but then it didn't come out as cost effective I saw.

£7 x 24 months = £168 - add the £50 you pay when you actually wanna claim and that's £210 - I figured not really worth it. I guess you could cancel the policy early near the end of the phones life and save some dosh.

I'm sure if it requires a bit of reparing though it shouldn't be too much hopefully.

I might be tempted to do that later on if the rice thing doesn't work. taking off the back of an iphones not that straightforward, and it voids the warranty as well, so I'll use that as a last resort I think.

Yeh but is a new iPhone not worth something like £300, if not more??? It's typical though, when you have insurance, nothing happens but when you get a phone and don't take the insurance, you do something silly!

thulfi
05-04-10, 01:00 PM
Exactly!! Perhaps over a decade of insuring the crappy phones I had, and nada, zilch, zip! Then I fork out for an iphone eventually, and stinge out on insurance for the first time! Sods law

There is no back of the phone on an Iphone, its all one piece.

£7 insurance is cheap though, my iphone costs 12 quid a month to insure.
Jenn's ipod (I know its not the same) went through the washing machine.
I sat it in the airing cupboard for a couple of months and now its fine.

So do you have the tools to take yours apart?

The iphone and ipods, are meant to stay in one piece with no easily accessable areas.

The only bit of the iphone that the user is supposed to be able to take out it the carrier for the sim card.

yep there are some youtube videos of people doing it. Looks quite fiddly, and there are a few things that could go wrong.

thulfi, I don't know how old you are (so you might have to ask your Mom or Dad ;)) but if you have household contents insurance you may able able to claim from your insurance co. Most co's include accidental damage to personal possessions as part of their cover.

Secondly, most banks offer 'packaged' bank accounts (12 quid a month or so) that includes mobile phone insurance... as well as breakdown cover, travel insurance etc. What I'm not advising you to do is upgrade your bank account - wait 15 days and then claim off the insurance... that would be, well, wrong.;)

yeh that would be shocking, wouldn't dream of it:rolleyes:.
Don't they check the phone first though before you get insurance, cos otherwise why wouldn't everyone just do that?

I think though that it may well be covered under house insurance. I'll check with my dad though.

Nope, nobody even looks at your phone. You may need to register the IMEI though.

Wow well the rice method actually worked! Left it in a bag in the airing cupboard for about 36hours. Now its actually working like it did before it got wet.

I almost bricked it hard though when I tried to put the simtray back into the iphone. It would only go in 95% and would not budge further, and so wouldn't be read by the phone. I then read somewhere that the iphone simtray thing is really awful, and tiny screws can lodge in there when you pull it out. I was peeved cos I though I'd end up having to take it to the apple store or something.

Anyway, was fiddling about with it throughout most of the barca match first half, and finally did it after 30minutes poking aimlessly with thin pieces of card in desperation, and slowly forcing it back in.

So just a heads up to the others on here who have that phone.

oh no too bad. Yeh I can imagine it can't be 100%, and mine didn't suffer a washing machine battering either to be honest. At least you can get a replacement though, so not all bad!

I know its fixed now an all, but the thing with the bank accounts covering the phone; They do only need the EMEIEIEIEIEEIEE number once they have that its covered.
Choose your bank wisely though, Natwest WILL cover all generations of the Iphone on thier advantage accounts. But Halifax asked for a payment IRRC

dont know if this has been said but the worst thing you can do when something electrical is water damaged is turn it on, just leave it for a week or so to naturally dry turn it on and it will more than likely be fine.
