View Full Version : What you wearing under your leathers?
Hi Peeps,
I've just bought a RST Fusion suit and have tried a set of Trespass base layers, the legs are fine, but due to having a few back problems looking to ensure i keep the top half warm as possible.
Is there any good under suits available?
Cheers
Rob.

Layers if it's cold. Generally 2x T shirts and a long sleeved cotton shirt. Avoid long shirts that have any extra crap around the sleeves, or any fleeces that are bulky around the wrist area as they constrict the blood flow and give you cold hands.
Also try a big fleece over the top of leathers, you'll be warm as toast then as it breaks up the wind blast that will go through the leathers vents or zips or whatever.

Edz undersuit. If it's cooler then jelly hansen base layer over that with a thin northface fleece. The edz microshells are goodfor keeing the cold out to.

As YC has already stated, layers are the way to go.
I use a close fitting base layer, then a cotton T-Shirt and a pertex under shirt.
This stops the wind chill and helps a lot as my leathers are perforated and well vented.
I have just bought a yeti fleece to go over the top of everything and am now toasty :D
Dont forget your neck area thogh, if you stip the wind getting into the top of your leathers round your neck, you'll keep more of your body heat in.
*edit*
My microsshells are EDZ as Fizz mentioned but couldn't remember the make.
The yeti fleece is also an EDZ.

Thanks guys, will be ordering some Edz stuff later.
I really like them and for the price seems really good quality. They did feel a little strange at first, I'm not a fan of tight clothing, but getting use to them each time i go out and it's reassuring to know I'm more protected than i was in the stuff, I bought of ebay when i first passed, which were a little small.

i was too warm on the motorway on the way home =
EDZ undersuit (top and bottom), a vest from river island, a ducati t-shirt, polo neck jumper (the collar lips over my leathers nicely and I can tuck my neck tube into it) then my leathers and then a rain suit over the top as it looked like it was gonna feck it down...
Just picked up the pace a little to get the air moving through a bit quicker :) can't believe summer is on its way :D

Boil in the bag? Christ, wearing that much would bake me! :p
I normally just wear a long sleaved base layer, then a short sleaved t-shirt over the top. Maybe an extra t-shirt if a bit chilly.

funnily enough i was getting the shivers on the way down on saturday evening with exactly the same kit on but today it was quite a lot milder (and I came up the m1 instead of the m6, wrong side of the hills and all that )
Depends on the weather... However, I ALWAYS make sure I have a decent, non faded, definetely with no holes underwear on.
Always remember watching a programme called real A&E, features alot of air ambulance stuff, and a lot of bike accidents.
I always remeber some chap having his leathers cut off him and he had some awful White torn Y front, I was just thinking poor chap purely because of those.
I don't have any bike specific edz type under leather stuff though.

Okay, not leathers but the textiles are a good fit. Long wool underwear (sometimes two layers) followed by armour. Jacket has a liner. Heavy socks and balaclava. If desperate I'll shove the sheepskin (heavy fleece) from my seat down the front of my jacket - try it.

shorts, T shirt :)
I can usually get jeans under the leathers, makes life a bit easier when I leave the kevlar jeans at home. If I'm getting a bit chubbs though I can't do it!.
Most important layer underneath my leathers is definetely my forcefield back protector though.
Boxers, T-shirt and back protector. If it's cold enough to warrant any more than that then I wear textiles.
One thing I hate is bulking up under my leathers, because they are a tight fit.
... a smile!
Seriously, normally just underwear on the bottom and a long sleeved cotton top. When I was riding in the cold I managed to fit my jeans under my leather trousers and a thick jumper under my jacket, nice and toasty.
Long sleeved underarmour cold gear mock top, which keeps my topside toasty in any weather.
If it's really cold then I also go for ski socks and some thermal trousers.
Although that'll roast me alive above 10C! After that I tend to just wear a thin Tshirt.

I use a Coolmax t-shirt and cycling leggings, but I wear textile trousers by Weiss, which are pretty warm. On my top if I am cold I wear my New Marduk Shirt. Not a make, but a wicked black metal band from Sweden. I bought at the gig I went to earlier this year. It is great for my biker dyke image!

+1 and if too tight the reduced circulation will make you cold

Knox dry long sleeve top and leggings (or what ever they call them?) or kangaroo poo as above. Decent gear

Just wear jeans and a t-shirt or long sleeved top if it's cooler.
Thermal cotton under layers, t-shirt, police fleece(wow its warm) and fluffly walking socks...
If its really cold and wet, a rainsuit on top, is amazing for keeping the wind chill off.
If dry and cold, a fulffy hoody over the top.

Lidl (I kid you not!) base layer m/c long sleeved top and full leg length compression thermals plus a short sleeved Aldi thermal m/c top and an Aldi half zip m/c microfleece with a pair of Aldi m/c socks. All thin layers, cheap as you like and very effective.

I've got a fair amount of natural insulation (Iard) but it still depends on how cold it is.
Below ~5 celcius:
Full thermals (tops and bottoms)
Thin fleece,
Leathers
Yellow high-vis jacket (fleecy inside and windproof)
Windproof neck warmer
Optional, windproof overtrousers for longer rides
Between 5 and 12-ish celcius:
Underwear & t-shirt
Thin Fleece
Leathers
Windproof neck warmer
Optional, windproof jacket
Any warmer:
Underwear and t-shirt
Leathers
Fleecy neck warmer
So, like people have already said, lots of layers to mix and match.
Underarmour kit is good for summer use.
In the cooler spring months if i wear leathers then its a good base layer and a mid layer.
The best base ayer i have ever come across is by Musto. other good makes are Icebreaker, Rab, mountain hardwear, mountain equipment.
For summer use a good whicking material will work best, although most tend to make you smell a bit.
I have an undersuit I use for long journeys in the summer. It soaks up the sweat and stops your leathers ending up stinking inside. If it's too cold to ride in leathers I'll wear my textiles instead.

Make sure you don't skid your leathers then, they don't like the washing machine when you're trying to shift the muck.

Trackie bottoms, a t shirt and a yamaha fleece on the top if it gets a bit warmer than it turns into just the shirt

Ditto. I wear Skins under mind and once I fit a back protector it's a pretty perfect fit all round.
Anything thicker would start to get uncomfortable.
