been contemplating going naked for a while and been looking at these two in particular. i went to look at a FZ1 after work but the sales person seemed to know nothing so wondering if anyone who owns either or has had experience with either and could give me some info before i start asking for test rides.
stuff i would like an idea on:
ride comfort for lanky people
tank range (not meaning MPG just what distance you can get out a tank) im presuming 120 to tank for the FZ1?
am i right in believing there is different power models of the FZ1? :smt102
im looking at the new shaped ones for both so im either looking to purchase new or 05 onwards second hand so does anyone know any faults or improvements with different models?
also ABS, any disadvantages with it?
used to have an FZ1S 06 - if you buy go for 07 onwards as the fueling issue was addressed.
you assume right for the tank range on the FZ1. Ride comfort was fine for me on long rides as well. Big bike and with a bit of tweaking had it running at 144bhp. didn't have ABS so can't comment

apparently a gap between 3-4k rpm

if chris (yorkie jones) had come down for MESS rideout then you could have prolly had a go on his 59 plate z750 = lovely looking bike and he's thrilled to bits with it. 0% deal as well so it's worked out a right bargain for him

You'll miss the fairing and curse the day you decided to buy a naked bike.
Yesterday I rode a naked Bandit 1200 less than 15 miles and couldn't wait to get off the bloody thing. Pointless having 140bhp and 150mph potential if you're stuck at 80mph because the wind is tearing your head off at anything faster, unless all you want to do is pull wheelies everywhere, cos that's all that much power would be good for.

Z750 owner here :)
Comfort - plenty good, but I am only 5'8"
Range - seen 200 out of a tank on my commute from Central London to the other side of Guildford
ABS - Takes up more space under the seat and adds 4 kilos front and back (apparently according to the manual) not had any issues with the ABS. TBH there never was going to be a lot of space under the seat anyway.
Get the Z750 - It wasn't my 1st choice when I replaced the SV, but naked at private runway speeds isnt that different than faired.

I had an FZ1 for a couple of weeks and 600 miles when my R1 was having some warranty work done to it. Engine is strong, but considering it's roots, not as strong as it could have been. It's been "retuned" for mid range but it's taken the fun out of a stonking engine. Still plenty of go go, but could have been a right hooligan tool if Yamaha had left alone like Aprilia and their Tuono.
Suspension is soft, but I am comparing this to sports bikes which I have ridden for the last 6 years (d'uh). It copes well with the range of roads you find in the UK. Big, wide bars give good leverage to get the bike into a corner - and it handles corners well. I was scraping pegs after a couple of days. Very confidence inspiring.
The ride position is different to the SV (or CBR or R1) as it is more sit up and beg. More comfortable at normal speeds because there isn't as much weight on your wrists. Gets a bit buffety as the speeds rise, but if you slide back in the saddle and lean forward it is not so bad.
The can is fa-hookin massive. I ride toes on pegs and my heel was resting on the can which was a bit annoying.
It was an OK bike, but didn't make me grin like an idiot and I never wanted to look back at it after I'd parked up after a ride.

Around London I was getting 120/tank
Commute is Vauxhall to the A3, then A3 through Guildford, then 7 miles of twisties.
Apart from when I have to stop I am never out of 6th, capable of playing "keep up" with R6's on the A3 at runway speeds, and dropping down to 3rd for the 7 mile stretch, and am returning a little over 10miles/litre - or 45+mpg.
If I was a little more careful that could go up to 50mg :)

No-one can ride a naked 'comfortably' at a ton. You can ride at that speed, but it's bloody awful to do so because the wind rush is quite fierce.
I don't care what anyone says, there's no way any naked bike is as comfortable as a faired one at 80mph+ speeds. If you've had a faired bike in the past, you'll miss the fairing when the weather gets bad or you want to crank the pace up - fact.

Do you want one? I don't like fairings because I don't actually like it being easy to sit at 150mph. The SRAD has a big barn door fairing on it and a really good bubble type screen. The speedo overreads but with couple teeth up on the back it was hitting limiter in 5th which I reckon is around 155? I've done similar speeds on a naked bike and fact it was painful meant you didn't get too accustomed to it.
Faired bikes are for the track and people wanting to take their fat missus to Italy on the motorway.

But about sitting at a ton on a naked, just lean into it. The wind supports you and you can relax. Fair enough holding it flat out does make the shoulders ache a bit if you're wearing anything with more wind resistance than normal. You soon get used to it if you're doing it every day.

Naked bikes are for poor people, and those who are stuck in the 1970s, even if they were born in the 80s.
There's nothing big or tough about riding a naked bike and the same applies to a faired one. I, and about 85% of the motorcycling community, prefer faired bikes for their practicality.
FWIW, I see more fat ugly munters on the back of naked XJRs, ZRXs etc than I do on faired bikes, usually they're wearing cammo trousers and a leather cut off waistcoat or tassled leather jacket with crappy patches badly sewn on. They are all individuals, which is why they all dress the same and ride the same kind of bike :)

So you're saying all the people who ride supersport bikes on sunny days buy them because they are practical? I think you're mixing up cause and effect there!
faired bike would be very impractical for me, mostly because of the expense of replacing all the plastic 5 or 6 times in the last year or 2!

its long stretch runs im more interested in as it saves the hassle of having to fill up when on a long motorway run
as for the fairing argument, I'll be keeping the sv i just want a naked to tour on as the sv is to cramped for me

Sure, if you want to pin the throttle in a straight line. Bit of a different argument to practicality though innit?
Difference is at what, 120? 130? I've sat at 130 indicated on the motorway with folks on full faired bikes for full tank of fuel at a time and not had any fatigue problems.
Doing 80, 90, 100mph it makes no odds whether you've got a fairing or not.

Got an 05 Z750, have put shorter dog bones on it to jack the back end up 35mm, i'm 6'3" and 16 stone and have no issues what so ever.
Fuel economy is a damn sight better than the SV1000 ;) probably average 120/140 a tank.
Have done a couple of 250 mile trips on it with no aches and pains, wind sheer isn't really an issue until you get over a ton.
Suspension wise it isn't the best but there are plenty of mods to do, i found that jacking the rear made the front feel more planted, next on the agenda will be an upgraded rear shock.

When I got the hornet I hated motorways because anything above 80 was a no-go. Then I shoved a little givi screen on it and now 110 is comfortable.
