Hi all,

Just got an issue I need a hand with on my SV650S 2001. First thing in the morning (and every now and again afterwards) when I knock the bike into first and release the clutch gently the bike makes a grinding noise. I was thinking maybe its something to do with the speed I release the clutch but I haven't a clue. Any help would be appreciated!!

Cheers

Hi there

we're getting alot of clutch related posts at the moment! Check your chain tension, there should be about an inch of free play at the tightest spot (if you have lots of tight and loose spots, replace your chain and sprockets). Also, clean and lubricate the chain :) Check your engine oil and top up if you need to; when was it last changed by the way?

If these simple things don't help, then try adjusting the clutch worm drive mechanism:

Take off the front sprocket cover (3 x 8 mm bolts...you'll need a socket on an extension to get to them). Pull the clutch lever and see where the push-rod goes into the engine; this is what seperates the clutch plates when you pull the clutch in. To adjust this,m slacken off the clutch cable at both ends. Take a 10 mm ring spanner (i think its 10 mm) and a flat headed screw driver; put the flat headed screw driver in the slot and the ring spaner on the nut surrounding the sloted thread. Holding the screwdriver steady, release the nut. Wind in the pushrod with the screwdriver until it juuuuust touches (to get a feel, when it first touches, back off and then wind to a touch again). Now, with it just touching, wind out about 1/8th of a turn (haynes says 1/4, sid squid says 1/8...1/8 seems better). Holding the rod steady in this position, nip up the nut with your ring spanner. Retightend clutch cable to the desired slack, leaving yourself some room at the handlebar end to loosen off or tighten once the clutch cover is back on.

(just copied and pasted that from another thread I posted it on a on a minute ago lol)

How is the gearbox and clutch action when the bike is warm and up to operating tempurature? Any problems when you've been sitting in traffic for a bit?

Just as a final quesrion, how many miles on the bike?

Cheers,

Matt

Right, I'll try answer in order!

1 - Chain has just been re-tightened, but does need a clean (getting done this weekend). Engine oil is about 8 months old reckon, after I had someone give the bike a good going over
2 - Might have to have some assistance with the Clutch Worm drive - I'm not the best mechanically! But if I can't sort it the easy way I'll take a look at it. Could it be the tension of the clutch cable?
3 - It does seem a bit better when its been running (was much better straight after the chain got tightened) but does seem to lack the instant power sometimes when I open the throttle after shifting. Again, I'm not sure if this is my clutch control
4 - By has about 26-27k on it

Thanks for the help, its greatly appreciated :)
