View Full Version : Earphones as a replacement for earplugs?

I always put ear plugs in whenever I ride as I'm aware of the damage of wind noise at high speed and I don't fancy damaging my ears any more than they are already however I do enjoy my music, and long rides can be boring!

Does anyone wear the noise cancelling inner ear plugs and do they find they give the same level of hearing protection as regular ear plugs? I'd really like to listen to music whilst riding sometimes but don't want to jeopardise my hearing! I'm also not willing to pay for those moulded ear plugs with headphones in, as they want a bloody fortune for em!

I guess the only thing to think about is if the earphones aren't as noise attenuating as you hoped and you turn your music up louder to compensate then you might do some damage there too.

I bought some Sennheiser CX500s a few weeks ago and they're absolutely spot on. They block out enough noise for you to enjoy the music without high volumes but let you hear enough to know what's going on. I had some CX300s before these and when riding I couldn't hear any of the bass from the music and could hear too much helmet/bike noise.
