View Full Version : Nothing compares to you - Alternatives to the SV?
Having real trouble finding a replacement streetbike for the sv650n which is making me beg the question is it the prefect road bike??? models ive looked at are
kwak z750 +z1000 <----- z750 build for money is questionable ,z1000 more a sports bike
Honda hornet 600/900<---- 600 untested but people say its slow for the specs, 900 heavy + weird handling expensive honda dont like doing deals like 0%
Bandit 650/1250 <---- heavy bike has a very low centre of gravity and has been arround since the 80s
Sv1k <--- Too heavy and lumpy feels akward (could be the one i tested tho)
YZ6 <--- imo prolly closest for flickabilty and similar riding style bit gutless in low revs
ER-6 <--- too damn ugly looks like a mutant duck build quailty looks shabby but like gladius gets some good write ups
gladius <--- ER-6's ugly sister and is that a steel midpipe ?? but seen good reviews
GSX650<---- bandit with fairing steel downpipes :/ come on its 2010 not 1970 build quaily looks very cheap
triumph street triple<---- not tested but spoken to owners and mechanics and have questionable realabilty + front head lights look like there made of recycled kids toy plastic
any others to think of ?

aprilia tuono. heard very good things from owners, plenty of punch, sounds as good as an SV if not better and are pretty reliable
Is there anything wrong with your SV or a particular reason you need to change it?
no sv is fine was looking for a change its 4 year old now from new with 13k miles never had a problem needs new wheel bering and folk wipers thats about it
Could try the 'prilias: Shiver, Dorsoduro, or a Tuono if you want a thou, but I'm biased :D

I read the other day on one of the threads that there isn't an equivalent to the sv by any other bike manufacturers. Then on mcn I read that the yamaha xj600 diversion would be a vauxhall astra deisel if it was a car. So the question is......what car would the sv650 be the equivilent of?

Forgot the one in your pic as well :p
If you want a naked then the Tuono should be a good bike! Many fans :)

Only thing I find as much of a giggle as my SV is old GSXRs with flat bars.

24 ish. Was off road for nearly two years until the rebuild was successful, and previously for six months when my ex had it.
Last year in the six months she was on the road I put around 3k on it. This year will be practically zilch as I'm pregnant.
There are many people who put a lot more miles on a bike, as we all do different things. I'm not one of them.
The 2000 reg one has around 33k, it started with 26k when I bought it three years ago.
proves the build on those engines btw congrats on the baby :)

hey theres SVs out there with more miles on than mine hun. Even mine are considered to be mediocre in the mileage stakes.
And thanks :-)

The SV engines are tough. Mine's knocking onto 50k and it's not had an easy life. Couple on here have done 60k, another couple have made it to 100+k

Mine had 8k on it when i bought it last year, as a 7 year old bike. shockingly low. Its now and and has 18k on it!
hmm might even keep mine till she dies theres nothing ive riden that makes me think yeah this is it might have to treat bike to some mods maybe :)

I dunno, a lot of it is you get used to your own. If you'd had say the FZ6 for all that time you'd think high revving engines were where it's at and think "what's the fuss about the SV, it's got no top end" or similar.
true felt like that after the vfr bit like the riding style i used to love dropped bars when i had the rs and vfr then went back to sit up thought i missed it untill i tried the sv1000s, tbh i prefer the sit up position (must be getting old :P)
shame the gladius is ugly

yeah, i think i prefer the wide bars. so much easier around town and at low speeds, but still work well with fast road riding and trackdays. I'm sure i'll change this opinion when i next get a bike with clip ons of course

Think we all feel the need for a change sometimes. I'm quite happy with both my SVs in all fairness, they do what I want them to do.
Now after five years, I think its time to have a play on a new bike, which is why I'm going for a bigger Vtwin. Triples and IL4s just don't appeal. I prefer clip ons, as I have a buggered shoulder, nakid bikes are awkward. Although the new bike I'm looking at is nakid, its riding position is quite comfy for the old bones.
Again everyone is different.
main bug with the naked is on wet days with turning into corners and a roads on windy days hard to push 100

i totally agree. I did have a ZXR400, which was very quick, aslong as you kept it above 10000rpm. that just gets old. I love the SV for its low down grunt, and I'd like to take that further i think. i've been looking at buells on and off for a while...

I wouldn't rule out the big fours, bandit 12, gsx14, zrx11... all got plenty stomp right at the bottom.
ye the bandit 650 is a nice little bike if not heavy just not allowed to have same as bro :P wifes orders

Doesn't sound quite the same though lol. I like the looks of some of those, zx12r for example, but i do love the quick steering and low weight of a little bike. relatively low powered bikes are also good fun on track, the satisfaction of passing something that should be faster than you is immense

Try something older and with twice the displacement. EFI, pah.

The zx12r is a hypersports though, different beast to a big brute of a naked. It's a laugh muscling a bigger bike around... and if you overtake anyone on a trackday on one you are a riding god... where if someone overtakes you well it's a naked bike innit :-P

...a bike on the road is worth 2 in the shed.
And if you buy a buell, expect to have a lot of time in the shed.

thats true. there was a bandit 12 on my last trackday, and he looked like he was really struggling, completely all over the place, wheelies out of every corner, but he had a grin coming out the sides of his helmet.
I think i like the look of a buell because its a big old harley engine shoe horned into a modern, tiny chassis. the xb12 redllines at 7000rpm, so a load of low down grunt with a peak of100bhp, but handles like a 600. sounds like a good combination to me. and its something different, which is nice
Sounds like a good slogan to me :)
