right ive just sold some bike leathers on ebay, the guy has made a payment to me and all is fine. however the money is showing in my paypal account as 'pending' and says it wont be released until the buyers confirms receipt of the goods, leaves positive feedback or 21 days have passed.

is this a new thing to paypal? as any time i have sold items previously the money has shown on my paypal account straight away and i can withdraw it straight away!

Not heard of it but maybe its because the transaction is above a certain value? Just a thought...

I've not had this before, I've had a payment waiting to clear, before I could send them.

If he posts negative feedback, does he get your leathers for free.

Don't seem right.

yeah the payment was for £150, but i'm just a bit wary as ive never had this before. i might e-mail paypal and see whats going on!

I thought the whole idea of Paypal was to ensure you got your goods having "paid" for them. In other words a third party, in this case Paypal, holds onto the money until the buyer confirms they have received the goods.

Might depend on what your PAYPAL status is too? Do you have a confirmed address on PP?

Have you sold much stuff

Are you somekind of Nigerian scammer ;)

yeah my paypal account is fine. paid for some stuff through it the other day, sold stuff previously and never and problems.

now i do have an email from paypal saying payment received, please send item. plus paypal says the payment from them to me is 'complete' so i should send the item. but for some reason its still pending at my end.

looks like im gonna have to send them anyway.

The first part sounds like phishing email. Its a con seen it before, brother nearly fell for it.

Unless the money is in your bank or paypal account dont send a thing! also dont click any links to sign in from an email. If your unsure whats happend try refund/cancel the transaction.

see thats the thing, the e-mail is from the genuine paypal service (or they have managed to send it from the real paypal account!) it says the item has been paid for, ebay account says the item has been paid for.

it just seems to be in paypal that it shows as pending. ive never had this before, and having a quick google it seems like it could all be genuine. but i'm just a bit suspicious!

ahhhhhh what to do!!!!

Phone paypal and speak to them about it.

Easy.

Did you read the link Stu posted? It's all genuine, change was introduced a while back [2008] and information about it is all over PayPal's website, here's another link about payment holds (https://www.paypal-marketing.co.uk/safetyadvice/PaymentHoldsForEbayItems.htm).

yeah i know, i have read the stuff, but this is the first time ive come up against this. any time i've sold items once the buyer has paid for them the money has been availible in my account straight away.

paypal are saying that i have to prove that the item has been shipped, wait for positive feedback, or wait until 21 days have passed before the funds are released.

i was just a bit wary to start with, but also a bit annoyed as this is the first time ive come up against this and feel like im in the wrong. i'm having to send an item technically ive not yet been paid for. i have to wait on the positive feedback, or for 21 days to pass before i receive my funds! but in the meantime i've sent the buyer a complete set of leathers!

You might not have been paid, but the buyer has paid for them, the funds are just being held in a secure escrow account.
Think about the buyer - he has sent £100-£150 and so far has nothing show for it!
There has to be a bit of trust somewhere.
I don't think it's quite as simple as he gives you neg feedback and you won't receive anything for them.
As long as you have proof of dispatch (and if they are not received then you can claim in full from the courier) and they are basically as described then you will get paid.

+1 Its legit, i had to do it for some strange reason even though my account had good feedback.

I had this when i sold my sat nav, i eventually found out its because youve sold an item over a certain amout, i had sold around 40 items before, but this didnt count as none of it was worth as much. as long as it is showing pending in your paypal account, its fine. it means the buyer has paid, its just a pain really having to wait for them to release the funds.

Sounds like if Paypal hold onto enough of people's payments for 21 days they can make a fortune from the interest I'm guessing???

I wouldnt do it, id rather refund it. Ive never ran it this on recently sold things, I just wouldnt do it. Things were working find it was, I wonder under what conditions this happens.

Just out of curiosity how else do you expect Paypal to work? As I said earlier the whole idea of paying for something through Paypal is that you get a degree of protection, ie: if the seller is a con artist and never sends you what you paid for you get your money back. Paypal can't do that by producing the money out of thin air, they do it by holding onto the cash until they have confirmation from the buyer (by the leaving of feedback) that they have received the goods.

They never have done this to mineor friends accounts, if it goes wrong you get a refund anyway once you dispute it with paypal. Its always worked flawlessly for me when things have gone wrong.

Things will still go wrong with this method, its just moving the protection to the other side.

Then you'll never sell anything of value on ebay again.

Do you have a problem understanding Red Herring's post? Where is Paypal going to get this refund money from if not the seller?

Wow, ok this has just happened to me as well except I was the buyer and not the seller.....

On 20th March I did a 'Buy it Now' for a splitter for my car bumper, I paid straight away via Pay Pal and the seller left me positive feed back. So I was happily waiting for my parcel to arrive and after the 5 days that the ad had said the splitter still had not been sent. So I contacted the seller to ask where the item was and he said that I had not yet paid. I checked my bank and the money had gone to Pay Pal, I checked Pay pal and the money had been sent to the buyer. So I sent the confomation slip to the seller confirming that I had sent the money. The Seller said that the money was 'Pending' and could I release it. I replied that there was nothing for me to release as the money was no longer in my account and so I had to raise a dispute. The seller said that he still could not do anything as Pay Pal wanted to refund me the £25 which he has not recieved. Anyway, last Friday the seller sent me the splitter and then today I get an email from Pay Pal saying that they are refunding me the £25, now that surprised me. So I have the splitter and the £25, and I sent an email to the buyer saying that I was re sending him the money as I have already fitted the splitter to the car. I don't know why this happened, I have 66 positive feedbacks and the seller had over 1000 positive feedbacks. I just thought that I would post to let you know that the buyer is just as confused by this new method that Pay Pal have adopted. Although the strange thing is that I have bought 4 other items since the 20th march and they have all worked as normal.
