Date is Saturday 22nd May
Meeting Point - Moffat High Street (by the Ram) at 10:30am - (click here for a Street View) (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=moffat&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=19.228226,57.084961&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Moffat,+Dumfriesshire,+United+Kingdom&ll=55.333575,-3.444836&spn=0.009007,0.027874&z=16&layer=c&cbll=55.333642,-3.444915&panoid=RcZRnUt3Bf3qAxP16DaApQ&cbp=12,14.25,,0,18.58)
Route is roughly 150 miles (start at Moffat, end at Elvanfoot - next to Abington Services for those heading back up North)
It'll be a one day job this time, with a view to maybe making it a regular occurrence tied in with a stop over for those wishing to come from further afield.
One key factor in finalising the route is a meeting point - as it looks like most of the interest is coming from the Central belt area, I'm thinking somewhere like Moffat could be an easy & obvious choice.
The route I've got in mind is something like this:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Dumfries&daddr=Dalbeattie+to:Palnackie+to:54.817305,-3.928642+to:Kirkcudbright+to:Creetown+to:Minnigaff +to:New+Galloway+to:St+John%27s+Town+of+Dalry,+Dum fries+and+Galloway,+UK+to:Bogue,+Dumfries+and+Gall oway,+United+Kingdom+to:Moniaive,+Thornhill,+Dumfr iesshire,+United+Kingdom+to:Thornhill,+Dumfriesshi re,+UK+to:Durisdeer+Mill,+Thornhill,+Dumfriesshire ,+United+Kingdom+to:Elvanfoot+to:Moffat,+Dumfriess hire,+UK+to:Dumfries&hl=en&geocode=FUhJSAMdHPPI_ylXBDfo5-piSDEgtEIGGmgMBA%3BFWo3RgMdCarF_ynrMz2zJMRiSDEbpvX v7N1ppQ%3BFXGWRQMdgGTF_ykLzMtVq8RiSDHkaW9_rbN8yA%3 B%3BFba-RAMd6DfC_yl78v3t3d1iSDHRJUjrDiA_lg%3BFfCwRQMdji29_ ykdWBxAkPdiSDGZDgYiJZecSA%3BFf22RgMdIJq7_ynf1-oIzlhiSDExQBhQ4hEy4Q%3BFd5iSAMdWtLA_ymPXTzMJ41iSDG 7eq1QhFc7Ug%3BFVHZSAMdmXLA_ylNY7S4_pJiSDGL3wCS16Cg vA%3BFSPdSAMdoBzB_ylXxHkyd5NiSDGRlCv_GmgMJg%3BFc4-SgMdMC7E_ymRb87VLJZiSDEBwvx0YwHVtQ%3BFYfiSgMdOYTG_ ymRb87VLJZiSDHUMV026W0z5g%3BFR4ZTAMdK57G_ykhQdi7FK 9iSDHh0S7_GmgMJg%3BFY_uTQMdJSbI_ynRIroKYapiSDG10S-2irn2Mg%3BFYhSTAMdP2_L_ynXmRf92k19SDEUFsAs9WQNBQ%3 BFUhJSAMdHPPI_ylXBDfo5-piSDEgtEIGGmgMBA&mra=pe&mrcr=10,11&mrsp=3&sz=9&via=3&sll=55.122367,-3.562317&sspn=1.06486,3.56781&ie=UTF8&z=9
Which takes in the delights of (in no particular order here):
Twisties:
- Dalveen Pass between Carronbridge & Elvanfoot
- Clone Road between Moniave & Thornhill
- Queens Road between Minnigaff & New Galloway (Visitors centre for Coffees etc on this road)
- 702 between St John's Town of Dalry & Moniave
- Dalbeattie to Kirkcudbright (as good a place as any to stop for lunch/coffee/bacon rolls etc)
Sweeping roads:
- A701 from Moffat to Dumfries (**1 x Regular Scamera Van site**)
- A711 from Dumfries to Dalbeattie (** **1 x Regular Scamera Van site**)
- The only picturesque section of the A75 from Gatehouse of Fleet to Minnigaff (Speed Camera / Coppers with Hairdryers Heaven - DO NOT SPEED ON THIS BIT!!)
This route, whilst 150+ miles would allow a starting point at Moffat, and an end at Elvanfoot, which isn't far at all from Abington Services & the motorway North.
Moffat has cafes and coffee shops galore for a quick cuppa before we set off, Kirkcudbright for lunch/rolls then an optional stop off at the visitors centre in Galloway Forest Park for a cuppa.
A quick word in advance, and the point where I sounds like a tosser (despite I know it not being needed!)
Many of the road surfaces down here are a bit, Agricultural at best - there's potholes, gravel, mud and cow shat all over the place - ride to expect it and you won't be suprised by it.
Following on from that, due to my previous meet & greet with D&G's finest, I'm on somewhat thin ice - i.e. if I get caught speeding again so soon after the last time, I'll be bent over a barrel and buggered with a marrow.
Assuming I'll be lumped up at the front (and I've got another couple of bods in mind that might take this on instead), please bear that in mind if you're behind me!
Now, any questions?
:)

Sweet. The folk heading south should arrange a place to meet. I should hopefully be on my GSXR Thou if all goes well on Sat
Anyone from Glasgowish are heading down??#-o
ramjam as things stand i'm up for this mate. i'll be leaving from newmains but can meet up around the m74 maybe the holiday inn at strathy park that way combat fred can fly down the express way from EK and meet there too.
its a bit boring on the motorway heading down to moffat so alternatively we could head too biggar then along the broughton rd [b7106] then the a701 to moffat.check it out on google map as it might make a good appetiser for the main run.

i've had a wee think and it would take about 1hr 30 min to do this run so its maybe a bit to much if we've to be in moffat for 1030hrs.
any thoughts give me a shout.

The Biggar route would be ideal although i think we'd be pushed for time unless were up really early. May just have to blast down the M74 and save our energy for what James has put together, which should be a good wee rideout :-o

This is the first time I've tried to organise one of these so please bear with me...
The plan is to finish off at Elvanfoot, so it's nearer to the M74 for you guys heading home. The M74's torture, but there is the wee service road that runs alongside it from Abington to Moffat (and beyond actually) which isn't much slower and might be a bit more interesting for you on the way down?
A quick recap, with some more details thrown in for effect:
The planned stopping points are in bold (I'm going to do a proper scout of the route this weekend, so these might change):
Moffat - meeting point, coffee/bacon roll etc before we set off.
Dumfries for a quick regroup (it's only 20 miles or so from Moffat to Dumfries).
Kirkcudbright - Regroup (maybe grab some lunch here, depending on the time).
Minnigaff (Newton Stewart) for fuel & pick up MBK if she's coming.
There's a pretty long stretch between Minnigaff & Moniave, which might be a bit much, but there's a visitors centre half way through the forest where we could stop for a cuppa and stretch of the legs etc.
From there a quick regroup at New Galloway / St John's Town of Dalry, then up the twisties to Moniave / Thornhill where we'll definitely be ready for a stop (there's a wee cafe at Moniave which is quite good).
From there, up the Dalveen pass and back to Elvanfoot / Abington services for you guys to head back up the road.
I know this has the potential to be a long run, Google maps has it as 155 mile, but most of this is on twisty, country roads so it'll not be a quick 155 miles!). So, for that reason (or bad weather etc) I've got a bail out diversion route planned which would take us from Kirkcudbright, up the side of Loch Ken (A713 I think) to St John's Town of Dalry, then pick up the route again from there. It misses out a fair chunk of good roads, so I'd rather not have to do this, but it's there should we need it at least.
Looking forward to it now, see you all at Moffat!

It might be an idea for folks to PM me a number, so I know who we're waiting for at Moffat? (I'll reply with mine)

Leave at 8:30 from Hamilton McDonalds, head down the Mway for Stonehouse/ Larkhall, then take the old B road to the truckstop going through Lesmahagow to Douglas, then take a left onto the old A74 (now a B road, but what a beauty of a fast twisty road all the way down to Moffat.O:)O:)..... same travel time as using the mway squaring off your tyres when you don't have to..
I hate using the mway on a bike all the way to Moffat from Hamilton - its waaaay too boring....in the car, van or truck then fair enough, but if I can go the fun back roads on a bike all the better...

I'll try & park my bike as close to the Ram (statue on Moffat High Street) as possible, there's a wee cafe up next to the Texaco Petrol Station (at the North/ Beeftub end of town) called Adamsons where I might be hiding if it's slashing it down..

Right guys, I have just been up the A712 between Newton Stewart and New Galloway. It is a lovely bit of road, with some pretty nice views. Hopefully I will be available for this bit of the rideout but if I am not, I want to give you all a word of caution. Please be very careful as there are some particularly nasty potholes, gravel patches and sneaky bends that tighten up.
When you are riding this bit, please just bare this in mind and leave yourselves a safety margin.

Ahem! This road is used to train us how to drive at advanced level at work. Some of the bends are sneaky. Talking from experience at driving the road using the limit point technique!!
i was down the borders in april.we went to ayr for a run and just kept going.ended up going down to patna, through dalmelington and into st johns on the a713.we then turned onto the a702 upto moniave and then thornhill.
i had only been down here in the works van years ago, before i got the bike and i have to say the roads are amazing.some of the bends did have a lot of loose gravel on them and as for the laybys its easier stoping on sand as my mate jim found out to his peril.:eye:
ram jam your going to have fun getting rid of those chicken strips on the new bike:riding:
i'm really looking forward to this \\:D/

Settled then - meet up at McDonalds Hamilton 8:30am with a full tank of juice. Get a quick brekkie (if you haven't had one already), and be ready for the off at 9am.. There's a Jet fuel station just up from the retail park heading for Larkhall (on the right hand side)if you need fuel.
I'm only going down the mway as far as stonehouse/larkhall, then cutting off for the more fun road to Moffat. Anybody who wants to try my way down is more than welcome to tag along..

Most of them!
It's only another 15miles ish from Thornhill (K) back up the Dalveen Pass (which is a fine, fine road) to Elvanfoot, so if anyone peels off there, they'd only be missing a relatively short section.
That said - if you wanted to, (bearing in mind you'll have just done something in the region of 230 miles by this point...) you could cut across the Mennock Pass from Elvanfoot which takes you past Leadhills & Wanlockhead and back onto the A76 just south of Sanquhar.
Best bet would be to see how it's going on the day, but there are plenty of options to make the route longer / shorter depends on how we're doing.

Well spotted - that had been my original plan, but me & the missus took a scouting run down there a few weeks ago and it's a horrible, horrible road.
Single track, pot holes, cattle grids, livestock wandering about, gravel, nasty bends that tighten up on you etc etc... Avoid like the plague in other words!
That stretch of the A75, although riddled with bored coppers with speed cameras, is actually quite picturesque so it's not too bad really.
It's only about 25 mins from Gatehouse to Minnigaff along the A75, and it's also about the only straight-ish bit of road in the whole route so it might even be a welcome break for folks.
Oh, and Wednesday was rotten!!

Still got The Raiders Road on my biking to-do list. Need to get a more "knobbly" bike 1st tho'.
Cheers
Andy
Aye, you'll defo need a knobbly bike for Raiders Road!

I've been resisting the temptation for a shameless plug of my Huskie 125...
Must resist, MUST RESIST...
Right I think I'm in for this assuming all are welcome :)
I've not ridden in groups much so what's the rules? All stick together or do your own thing?

Yup. You even have the correct type of bike.:)
Only thing I would say is if you can't see the bike behind you and you are turning at a junction, pull up and wait ("marking the junction"), so the folk behind don't get lost.
The bike who was infront of you will, (err.. should) be waiting at the next turn, so no need to panic playing catch up.
Tell a couple of folk if you are off home/ cutting off early is good too.
Apart from that, fill yer boots.

The only rules as far as I'm aware... (and aimed firmly at no-one)
- You're in control of your own bike - Ride within your own limits, capabilities and comfort zones.
- Don't overtake the leader, nor fall behind the TEC (tail end charlie), neither of which should be holding you back nor gee'ing you on, so this shouldn't be a problem. Being a marked man round these parts, I'm more than happy to let someone else lead if they want to go quicker, we can sort this out tomorrow if that's the case - really, it's not that complicated a route & I won't be offended!
- Give each other plenty of room - it'll be unfamiliar roads for many of us, so be ready for the rider in front to jam on the brakes/swerve etc for random pot holes, cow muck, gravel etc.
I've said it before - the roads down here don't get a lot of money spent on them, as such there is gravel, pot holes and a whole lot of cack on them, please expect it and ride accordingly!
Also, on that note the same applies for road signs - if there's a sign for a tight bend, it will very likely be a TIGHT bend! Obvious, I know but it catches a lot of folks out who're used to better road signage!
- Junction markings - we'll use the same Drop Off system that works well and many of you will already be familiar with.
The leader marks the junction until the next in line arrives who then marks it until the next in line arrives, who then marks it until the next in line arrives... etc etc, until TEC arrives then off we all go again.
For those who're not familiar with this, it's dead simple and becomes much clearer once it's put into practice on the day (honest!).
Oh, and the final, never to be forgotten rules:
- Don't ride like a d!ck'ead!
- Enjoy yourself!
:)

Woohoo, looking like a decent sized group for this now!
I must admit to not having put an awful lot of thought into a lunch stop, but it would probably make sense to try & find something at Newton Stewart, seeing as we'll be stopping there for fuel anyway.
What's the norm between stops usually? Hour or so of riding or more?

Lunch would be a good idea
No more than 2 hrs then a break me thinks

an hour between stops sounds all right we dont want any smokers getting the dts. shaking hands and blurred vision dont go well on the bike[-X
james try and think of some good places to stop especially for photos as theres some great views down there.

Thanks to the organisers for a good choice of route (it was a blast !!) and was good to meet some old and new faces.
Hope the lassie (sorry i have the memory of a goldfish for names) with the flattish tyre got home OK.

What can I say, great day, roads were superb, and the company, we can work on that, no seriously all great, that last bit was fantastic, so good infact when I got home I was buzzing and talked to my neigbour for the first time in three years (long story, the guys an ****) got invited in to another neigbours for an impromptu
bbq then went to the local rugby club watched the final and ended up in my other neibours hot tub till 3.30 drinking beer, messy in the morning.
The only down side, bikes still needing cleaned down.
Photos to come once I've worked out how to put them up, it's been awhile.
