Hi folks,

Was in my local bike shop today and saw this:

6667

Has anyone ridden/owned one of these?

Was offered a direct swap for my sv650n 58 plate.

What do you think? Crazy to get rid of my SV for a 10 year older bike?

Thanks for any input....:)

simplest way is to see parkers price guide online see what you'd get for yours ,see what the exup goes for and then decide, imho i wouldnt but hey thats me

after a quick look your losing about a grand on that

I got rid of a K5 which was like new for a 10 year old bike.

Only did it 3 weeks ago so I am yet to find out if it was the most sensible decision.

The new bike is so much more fun though I doubt i'll care.

I do like those R1s, all modern bikes appear to have followed that styling (pointy :))

Would've got one myself but the blade is a little more practical.

Depends on the condition/mileage/state of the gearbox/service history etc, have you got any actual pics of the bike?

I like the 1st generation R1s, they are supposed to be bonkers! Just as a guide, I've got a year 2000 model and paid £3250 for it a year ago with 7000 miles on the clock and it was in very good condition.

7000 miles, cant really be in bad condition can it? :p

Im not sure about the change hollay, it does sound a little like they are stealing from you (in a sense). You unhappy with your bike at all?

Dunno, I test rode a 10 year old Fireblade with 1300 miles on it and it was knackered.

After 5 minutes on an R1 he'll be very unhappy with his SV

Damn, how the hell?

Perhaps. Depends on what you want from your bike I guess. He might well be disappointed with the power of the SV for sure, but in the long run an SV makes more sense on the road. (especially with todays fuel costs :-?)

Damn, how the hell?

I don't know, I think they must have fiddled the mileage, and/or it was stood outside for a long time.

Each to their own I suppose, some people have all the fun they want on 30 year old 125s.

The SV will be cheaper to run, not just on fuel but on parts etc.

I would look carefully at the bike, and think does it look like it's only done 1300 miles? A lot of these will have mint bodywork and low miles because they have been raced. Don't take it for granted that it has not been raced.

Hi, thanks for all your replies everyone :)

Think i caused some confusion regarding mileage, the R1 has done just over 19000.

I got rid of a k6 for a 10 year old bike. Never looked back

:D Was hoping for the same thing.
I agree. Think it still looks awesome.

All i have got are pics from the dealer website, nothing up very close. Going back for a test ride on Sunday will sure to be ask all about service history etc. Sounds like you got a really good deal Davies, the R1 is up for £2999

7000 miles, cant really be in bad condition can it? :p

19000 miles, :)

Im not sure about the change hollay, it does sound a little like they are stealing from you (in a sense). You unhappy with your bike at all?

Not unhappy with the SV, just always been a sports bike lover, came back to bikes after 5 years off and thought i should get something sensible and unfaired. Turns out i'm missing the fairing lol. Plus as my name suggests i love R1's.

id have the r1 but thats because its the bike i grew up with dreaming of so to speak

Me too I was 18 when the R1 was launched and instantly fell in love, haha :)

Swap it put it in the garage and forget about it, buy another SV That Model R1 will be worth quite a few bob soon

I was thinking that, especially the red/white one, lots of blue ones kicking about.

Still undecided, but all going well on the test ride i might end up converting to Yamaha, sorry :(. Just wish i could afford both.

Thanks again for all your replies, some good things to think about. I'll post the actual pics of the bike next.

I got rid of my SV curvey for a zx636 although it was 4 yrs younger, I would never get another SV after the Ninja purely because compared to the supersports they are too sow and clunky, the SV is a great commuter/starter bike but I think providing the R1 is mechanicly sound you will fall in love with it and be tempted to swap but I think you need to listen to the orgers, assuming it's 1998 and an S reg parkers say -

Yamaha YZF R1

So shop around.

The dealer comes off better....

That's the norm is it not?

Seems a high price to pay for a bike so old. I would try to find the funds for the R1 and keep the SV in the garage for a couple of months. Just until you are sure you haven't purchased a lemon.

Agreed with what has been said above, shop around. Mine wasn't cheap by any standards but it was private through eBay.

That bike does look good though. If you do decide to have a stab at it though check that the exup valve is working properly and negotiate the price down because that standard rear shock will be shot by now unless it has had a rebuild.

Or, go for this one (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-YZF-R1-1998-Excellent-condition_W0QQitemZ320517912210QQcmdZViewItemQQptZ UK_Motorcycles?hash=item4aa05b3692#ht_1189wt_1165) , much cheaper and it has a really good (from what is written there) history.

Watch the front wheel coming up too :D

I think you should keep the SV and if you like the R1 so much you should buy it as well. Then you could spend a year with them both and if you still think the R1 is the better bike for you keep it and sell the SV. You'd still be better off than exchanging directly. The 99 R1 can be bought for one and a half grand, your SV would def get more than that as it's newer.

you are nuts!
first, i don't know if you checked the prices, but your SV, here, is worth $5-7K,depending on milage/shape. 98-99 R1's go for $2-4K...

second...i would not touch 10 yr old R1 with ~20K with a stick... unless you know who owned it and how they treated it, you might be in for never-ending grief.

that's my opinion - the clocks on my 98 RR only showed 30K (km) too, but for last 4 years it was only used on a track, and had all the instruments off... in reality it had ~50K, and though, after putting all the bodywork back on, she looked mint, compression on two inside cyl's was in mid 80's, bearings were shot pretty much all-around, suspension was leaking, clutch was cooked and 1st and 4th gears were stripped. the guy who bought it of me raced with me, so knew the bike's history. I gave him an awesome deal, and still, after completing most repairs he figured the money spent would have gotten him something far better... ended up trading it at a loss, and the dealer sold it for twice what they paid to a kid, whom i feel real sorry for...

i'm just saying... it does not have to be the case, but be vigilent...

4 mods if you count the Putoline sticker covering a scuff on the fairing (I suspect)!

Also bear in mind the dealers list price is just a starting point for negotiation. The one I bought my bike from knocked £700 off the price without too much asking.

Certainly doesn't seem that good a deal when you break it down, thanks.

Cheers for the advice Davies. That bike looks awesome, exactly what i'm after. Just a shame it's so far away, i live in Glasgow. :(

Good eye Liam, i suspect as much. The more i'm reading the more i'm inclined to stick with the SV. Can't afford both, in an ideal world.

Still gonna go for the test ride on Sunday and have a further dig around and talk £££

Sell your SV privately, and make him a daft offer.

I've had one (1999 model) since 2000....raced it for 9 years and can't bear to part with it. Such a good bike, still makes me smile when I see it. Mental on the road though, god knows what a 2010 model R1 is like with 20 or 30hp more!

It's the start of the season so dealers will be advertising top money as a lot of people are in the market for a new bike. They are just trying their luck.

I would be surprised if any of those sold for the sticker price.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your replies and advice.

Tried the R1 yesterday. Hated it :( Was a very poor example when you really studied it. Not the bike for me. Was well disappointed :(. Think it's a bit too extreme.

Got another question for you.

Had a shot of a 954 Blade 2002 model, 10k miles. Loved it :) But then when i got home I noticed the graphics on the lower fairing were missing. No Honda logo going along the bottom of the bike, and the Z shaped design, which should be in red are missing.

Can anyone imagine why this would be?

Dealer hasn't a clue. I'm thinking replacement panel after spill.

Or am i thinking the worse? Are these just stickers that are missing? Maybe pressure washer miss hap?

I love the bike, rides great. But this has put me off a bit.

could be that they didn't like the graphics..

My mate Si bought new fairings for his 04 blade the week he bought it as it had grey lowers and he wanted them black.

Or it could be that its been dropped.

You never know unless you know the previous owner.

barwel1992

id remove those stickers if it had them on so may be the previous owner just dident like them ?

and shame about the r1 saw about 4 or 5 of them on saterday down south

Unless the bike is imaculate, and has all previous MOT's to prove it's mileage, I'd hesitate too in giving away a perfectly good 58 plate 650 for an R1 of '98 vintage.

I had an R1 which I bought cheap (was needing work and a bloody good TLC session), and I sold it on for a tidy profit:cool::cool:. The '98 model R1's are getting hard to come by in a good tidy condition now..
If I had space at my home, and money, I'd buy a couple of standard ultra low mileage fireblades and r1's of nineties era up to 2001 ages, and mothball them for years.. I'd get back double my money on each bike no problems in the future... as there wouldn't be any tidy low mileage standard ones left in 20 years time.. plus they'd be considered all time classics..

Plus I'd love to have a standard red Duke 916 in my lounge. Those things are gorgeous, and immaculate ones only appreciate in value..
