Once again....
http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/Biker-killed-in-Mountain-Road.6235951.jp
From what i've heard (baring in mind this is a small island so everyone knows everyone as such). Sounds like the cars fault, and having seen the crash markings this morning all i can say is what a stupid place to overtake (if it was the case)...

RIP...sounds like the Impreza was overtaking the van and crashed into the bike? Is that the overtake you meant in your comment?

You gotta start to wonder when will they reduce the speed on that road, or make it all one way. Its not a massive island so to make it one way although it might seem like a pain in the ass, it wont make your journey to work any longer than the average daily commute is here.

The IOM gov' had a referendum and the islanders decided against a reduced speed limit.
if you made the mountain one way all the time it would be a massive inconvenience for many islanders, IOM isnt like the mainland , there arent the roads to divert onto that we have, i just couldnt see that being anything that they would go for.

Just seems a bit silly that they accept the risk been so high. Even if your taking it easy yourself, if someone else is hooning and you're in the wrong place when they make a hash of it then its lights out.
I just cant get my head round that been accepted, when it'd be so easy to reduce that risk even if the solution makes it a PITA for everyone at least it saves lives.
You've said before manx that the roads arnt dangerous its the traffic coming the other way which makes it lethal. Remove the traffic remove that risk, so what to the inconveniance this way you can keep your limitless speed.

If they stick a limit on there, then there will just be even more Scooby's overtaking vans!!

I was pondering about this the other day - recuded speed limit on the IOM would prolly do some damage to the tourist trade brought by bikers all year round but there are other angles to consider..
As for making it one way, the mountain road seemed to be quite secluded in places with only one or two little side roads leading off over the 7 mile stretch - it's not really the sort of road they could make 'one way' without messing up the traffic in the surround areas...
I thought it was a great road & fairly easy to ride (I ride like a girl) but could see how people could easily end up out of their depth if they pushed too hard.
Sad news all the same though :(
ive never been to the IoM only seen it on tv etc... but when ive heard people suggest a one way system i always wonder would that not potentially make it worse. i mean would it be classed as a wide single carriageway, or would it be a dual carriageway? would you then get people overtaking on bends etc, when the vehicle being over taken suddenly decides to cut the corner themselves.
i dont really know what the solution would be. how many accidents/deaths are there on the island in comparrison to say normal 'classic' biker roads like the cat and fiddle?

Surely that's about as sensible as enforcing a no overtaking rule (i.e. not very)
It would just make it more of a racetrack
What is the speed limit on IoM:confused:

On the mountain road its unlimited, ride/drive as fast as you like. The other roads in and around town etc are reduced to 20 in some places I think like those near the ferry terminal.
Stu the mountain road is already a race track, lol an Im not been clever I know its the TT yada yada I mean a road with out a limit which people already arsewhole along all the time. Its as good as a race track its just that there are other racers coming in the opposite direction.
My thought of the one way system comes from what Manx has said about race season, the whole course gets closed off and massive sections including the mountain road become one way. If its works for a few weeks out of the year then why not keep that system in place for the other weeks.

Exactly, the locals put up with it because of the racing, because of the huge amount of m9oney brought into the island, because, well just because.
However if you start talking about making it permanent then everyone will be up in arms.
Sure it would be great to go to the IoM and have Mad Sunday every day of the week, right up till you are doing 150 on your 1 way race track and you find 2 tractors side by side having a chat round the next bend.........................

To be honest this gets argued here to potential solutions every year. I was chatting the one of the main Ian guys over here this morning for about 30 minutes and we were discussing just how unaware the drivers of other vechiles are. But he also taught me a great price of advice.... Only drive as fast as you can see ahead to be able to stop .... If that makes sense?

Cheers for that matt  I was looking forward to not riding like an irrationally terrified granny next month.
I almost had a head on with a brainless **** in a sports car the other day on the bike. Going along a NSL road I had a queue of traffic on-coming. When I'm about 50 yards away from an oncoming van; a previously completely concealed (so he was too close!) blue hairdresser thing goes sideways right infront of me and then ploughed straight back to where it came from as he saw me
Never seen a car's front end twitch like that! I'm assuming he almost filled his pants as much as me. Scarily close.
What is the speed limit on IoM:confused:
Out of towns: copper's discretion I believe.

well yeah! I didnt think I would have been the first person to have offered up that suggestion as a solution and I figured there would be some concrete reasoning for why its not possible. The tractors side by side coming into sight at short range at 150mph is a good argument for why not, but "because its a PITA to the locals" isnt.
