Well the Dr was a fully registered professional with an internationally recognised qualification,so what could possibly go wrong?
Everything it seems.
I hope the hospital gets sued to bankruptcy and other employers learn to check the competancy of their employees before letting them loose on the public.

never I have been more concerned about the compatancy of some NHS staff when they put a massive black arrow on my leg for the knee being operated on, sort of like "without this your ****ed mate"

It has happened, and not just in the NHS. Cheap and simple way of preventing an unlikely but MAJOR f***-up. I think this is now part of a check-list of things to do before an amputation, as well as asking the patient which leg is the problem!
