Hope you will be very happy with your new steed Dizzy

Yeah already tried to acquire them as buy it now, but hes reluctant to give me a price,so looks like bidding instead.

Anywayyy.....

Unfortunately me new wheels has fallen at 88 miles. I went to put the tax disk on this afternoon, and noticed a rather sinister spot of blue liquid on the front fork leg. Now the Raptors have a lovely knack of springing leaks in the radiator, and it seems this one has sprung one:( :ncool:#-o
I've rung the dealer and its under warranty so they have to get it fixed, I know the problem well, as Matt got rather a large one two weeks before we were to go to France a few years back.
However it can't be ridden there, and we live 88 miles away, luckily, Carol Nash say when I want it moving they will take it via breakdown truck. They were a bit reluctant as they usually take it local, but I explained I'd just bought it, and its under warranty, taking it local will void that.

So in the morning, I am taking many pics as it gets loaded in a truck and hope it has a safe journey back to the dealers. As I can't accompany it.

What the dealer doesn't know is if they can't fix it, its likely to cost them 450 quid for a new one that will take 6 months from CAgiva to arrive:help:

Anyone in the Derby area that fancies meetin my wheels to check its safe tomorrow, would be a very nice person indeed.....I'm a very anxious preggers burd, whose having kittens over me new toy!

The rad sprung a leak on the Raptor that I had when they first came out ...

On my way to a ferry to go to the Bol Dor 24 hour race :( .... they could not get a Rad for months even then when the bike was nearly new !!

Anyway I hope You get it fixed soon ....

The only bike that I have owned in over 35 years of riding that would wheelspin at over a ton on a damp road when you gave it loads !!!

Enjoy it when its fixed !

dizzyblonde
05-05-10, 07:11 PM
Well, just been sat talking to Carnivore on the phone and it seems to have gone in exactly the same place as his. He says apparently the problem with them is that they aren't welded but glued. Also many people don't realise that with it being curved, unlike an SV you can't pull it forward when changing the front plug, so it puts strain on it when people do it. Taking the rad off is a safe bet then!

Either way, hes pretty keen to find out what happens and indeed if its not fixed, where they source one from....maybe they could do a buy one get one free! Although hes been pretty lucky with his, as after the thing was 'fixed for 65 quid' and put back on it decided within a few miles to spring another five leaks....for the last three years its been held together with rad weld rather well.

I think I'm just going to start swearing a lot:smt099:smt099
Carol Nash are now going to pop off and listen to yesterdays conversations, as they don't believe they said they'd take it for me. So not only are they a bunch of cnuts for fifffing up my insurance policy six times, but now they don't want to help this morning, oh and they can't see my new bike on their computer.

When they do eventually ring back, I ain't putting the phone down until they have come and kisssed my pregnant ass, and have grovelled, cause that thing is going on a truck today even if I have to flag one down, throw the driver in the back, gaffer taped, and drive it there myself:evil:

Designers build to a budget and often what may seem like a sound answer can be enhanced by something simple. Sorry to hear about your disappointment Dizzy but at least you know of the inherent problems that exist.
You stated that the seams are glued,is there no possibility of running a solder trace or tack round the seams to either seal it properly or strengthen the existing seam.

dizzyblonde
06-05-10, 09:14 AM
No idea Mac, the radiators are somewhat of a naff design. Even when they first launched the bike as new, people were getting this problem. I know of one person that back then took note of the recall at the time, and still had two new ones fail. No idea why they do it. The TL radiators are curved, and I don't think they have issues like this, and unfortunately even though the Raptor shares the engine and electrics(AFAIK) the radiators aren't interchangeable.

The only other two major issues with the Raptors is that the rear shocks boil, from the rear downpipe being too close to it..solved with exhaust wrap, and a nice little problem of the drain hole inside the petrol filler cap getting blocked, which fills your fuel with water, and rots the wiring in the pump...nice.
Now some may understand why me and Carnivore always covered our bikes at org meets, much to peoples amusement, right now its got an Asda carrier bag over it, as I'm still waiting for this damn breakdown van.

can you remember what the firm was called Alex? That'll be for future reference. The dealers have a couple of places locally they can use to hopefully repair it. If they don't there is one place called Pace Products down Sussex or Suffolk that may be able to do something, well there was a couple of years ago.

Nice bike dizzy. can i have a go ;) Glad that your happy with it despite the "niggles" i do believe they call it character of a bike?

I've go that manual for you. However its on another hdd att he moment so will have to wait till next week if thats ok?

Nowthen get ont he raptor chapter and theres a link to the radiator chap. Its a common problem and can be fixed in weeks and not months. Might be an idea to give them a ring. If you do get a new rad ask for the old one and get it fixed as it will be worth something!!!!!

Have fun and let me know when your out and about on it :)

dizzyblonde
06-05-10, 11:20 AM
I'm a member on there Andy. Don't worry I've had a good gander for relevant links this morning whilst waiting for the van. Theres a few places that will do it. BUT, in the case of the last Raptor here, having it fixed properly didn't cure it. In fact it cured the original leak and turned the rest of it into a seive!!
It in the dealers hands now, so it can be there as long as it takes as far as I'm concerned!! If it means they have to go get a brand new one from Italy so be it, its that, that takes months.
At least I know how much Radweld to stick in it, if I ever get the problem ever again...not that I want it to!
One thing I have also found out on my info search was that the rad hoses get pushed a bit when they have crash bungs put on, I couldn't see anything, but it can add to the stress on the rad. Mine looks like its been re-routed to help.

Don't worry about the manual for now, its not exactly of any use to me presently..lol.
I won't be out on it until at least end of Sept, so lots of tinkering in the mean time :-)

Dizzy,

Got there at 2 today, Raptor all cozy in the workshop.

Mechanic said it had only been there 20 mins. Looks like it didn't suffer in transit.

He hasen't had time to look at it yet and he seemed quite busy, and I suppose yours will be at the back of the queue.

He said they had test rode it before you got it because they had put a new rear disc on it, but there was no coolant leak while it was in the workshop, but then again I don't suppose they got it up to temperature.

I took a couple of photo's on my phone, I'll try and post them later tonight.

:smt060Thanks, very grateful.
I doubt they got it up to temp either. Its not been run for a long time, we could tell that from the front brakes squeeling and being on the grabby side. Yeah the back disc had a crack in it before it went for MOT so they had to replace it. I reckon the only test ride it had was too and from the test centre, which they only found out on a pre MOT check.
It certainly had a good workout on Tuesday when Peg brought it over the Peaks:p
I doubt they'd have noticed the leak TBH, I only found it when I was crawling round looking for wher they hid the tax disc holder! That part of the rad is hidden by the nose fairing.

Well that will teach you for actually riding it wont it ;)

Where is it they spring a leak? I suppose I really should check KKs to make sure it's ok. Slight de-rail here I reckon KKs will need another rear disc for the MOT this year again as it's gone a bit rusty

Well I reckon it'll be safer to sit and hug it and squeeze it and polish it when its back:p

Sat on the bike, top left hand corner, just below the bracket, and cap side. Matts went there first, then turned into a seive!
Just had a reply back from one of the Raptor Chapter peeps, they seem to remember a recall to do with the spacers on the nearside bracket(thats the same side innit:confused:)
As for the brake disc, just go out and ride it with your foot stuck on the pedal;) Mines got a nice new EBC on it now:cool:

Yeah that's the near side

I avoid using the rear brake as it's crap and keeps sticking on, it was a nice new shiney disc in June last year!
