View Full Version : Why is my internet slow?

I moved my broadband router up into my office onto a telephone extension last night. The router is now right next to my laptop on the desk. Cabling seems good, phone working perfectly, and an ADSL filter in both sockets.
I've been having intermittent slow and stop internet problems all day and had to reboot the router a couple of times, which seems to cure it for a time.
On the last reboot I wired the laptop in using an ethernet cable and it's been fine since (it needs to be fine for the next hour because I have a livemeeting to present!)
Is it anything I've done or is it just slow t'internet due to general election day? (I'm on orange ADSL broadband).

It'll be the phone wire extension. I used to have my router on a long wire, same probs as you. Put it right by the phone socket and bob's your uncle!

New router? how far are you from the extrange? run a speed test then call Orange and complain.

It's quite possibly the cabling. Is it BT standard cable or something cheaper. That can make a big difference. Also check that the bell wire is disconnected at both ends as that interferes with adsl signals and reduces the speed.

Might be due to the Election?
The BBC website for example autoplays video coverage on some pages.
So, my bet would be that the UK Intartubes are blocked with Election Carp.

That'll by why
It's Friday afternoon and it's had a long week, so is tired.
Just like me really:smt082
Change the channel that the wireless is broadcasting over. I think most routers have 12 channels and choose channel 1 as the default. If your next door neighbour is broadcasting their wireless network on the same channel as you your connection will be weak/slow.

I thought ADSL routers worked best on the BT master socket. (Don't really know as I cannot get slowband round here)
Anyway, for best results, put the router where it works best and run a cat 5 cable between router and pc.

Yes and no. See my post above. If you disconnect the bell wire at the master socket and run good quality cable (not the cheap stuff from DIY superstores) to the extension, then you shouldn't get a drop in speed at the extension socket.

Slight derail. Perhaps this is why my Sky+ box's modem won't talk to sky through a cheapo diy cable

Thanks for all the replies guys. It has actually been absolutely fine since I hard wired the laptop to the router (which is fine because I use a docking station). Maybe moving the router has caused it to fight with a neighbours.
I'll put it back onto Wifi and set up a ping tool to log a continuous ping to the router, to my public IP gateway, and to a couple of websites. If they all drop out at once it's my wifi, if the public addresses all drop out at once it's my ADSL connection, and if only the website addresses drop, it's Orange. If Orange I'll do some tracert's and give them a phone.

That's more likely to be a bad connection or broken wire, or else the modem in your sky box is kaput. Sky boxes use standard dial-up, so won't be as sensitive to cheap cable as adsl modems.
Have you tried plugging a normal phone into the extension socket and seeing if that works?

Yes, but even through a hand set there's noise on the line. Might be because of an old line from the front of the house to the new telephone socket?
Sky box can talk to sky when everything is disconected from the main socket

That sounds a bit beyond my knowledge of phone lines. Do you have adsl and, if so, are you using microfilters to isolate normal phones from the adsl signal?

Yes, and I've tried every combination of extention socket & micro filter you can think of. When I've got the wrong combination, the line noise on my telephone line is horrendous.;
All it means is my sky box can't order sky movies, so its skys loss, not mine.
The answer is to have a proper line installed incl the extentions
Yeah, always best to have it in the master socket now adays, especially as the new BT sockets come with the new I-Plate which is suppose to increase speed as it filters out alot more, Also have the bare minimum extensions, if you've got an old one unused, whip the master socket off and disconnect the old socket! Less likely to generate a fault on your line :)

So nobody else got slow broadband because of the election today then?

No, mines been fine all day. Perhaps it was just your exchange?
So nobody else got slow broadband because of the election today then?
I would say yes, but i generally always have a slow broadband connection due to living so far away from the exchange!
Come BT, hurry up with that fibre :P
