View Full Version : Never ever move house
This weekend alone I have:
had 19 trips up the recycling facility
had 4 trips up to our storage container
secretly put stuff on the neighbour's skip
packed about 30 boxes of books
hurt my shoulder again through lifting said boxes of books
thought 'why the hell did we let it get like this' any number of times:rolleyes:
...and am exhausted. We last moved December 2001, when we moved at very short notice so didn't have time to clear stuff out. And working silly hours means I don't get time/am too knackered to do it ordinarily.
If ever there was a reason to live more simply...

Seconded. I've moved more times than I'd like to think about, I blimmin' hate it.
1. make less trips to the recylcling facility by taking the car and not the bike when transporting the goods
2. see above
3. i believe that to be "law"
4. read less
5. booo grizzle...get the mrs to massage you.
6. pass

Oooooooooooooo. Ed, where you moving too? I can't come round and lie on your neighbours lawn no more!!!! :-(
Oh no......now I'm dreading my move?
Seconded. I've moved more times than I'd like to think about, I blimmin' hate it.
Ditto.
I've moved 12 times since getting married in '79.
The worst one; the solicitor hadn't told the estate agent when we were completing. Turned up at the house with the removals people, and I went on to the agents to get the keys - they refused to give them to me, and couldn't speak to the solicitor coz he was in Barbados. I went back to tell the removal crew just as the meter reader turned up to do a final reading with the keys. I moved in then, by myself because the wife had given birth that morning 2 weeks late.
My next move will be in a box with no windows

Keith's simple rules for moving house.
1) If it fits in a box, pack it in a box
2) If it doesn't get a bigger box
3) There are some items which will need some encouragement to go into a box, so keep the toolbox handy.
For those people who are too mean to buy boxes (like me) visit your local off licenses and find out when they get their deliveries. Booze usually comes packed in nice sturdy boxes.

11 times since 1986 for me.
At Least I had the advantage of not owning any furniture. apart from a 2 sets of drawers and 2 not particularly useful shelves.
Still got Boxes books in my bosses garage. Though this morning finally finished their new home. There's a reason I failed woodwork - not a dovetail in sight
Edit:
Moving tip 3: If you decide to build bookshelves for the new place - don't buy Plain edged timber from Wickes - unless you go shopping with a tape measure & level.

We're moving to Baschurch, about 10 miles north west of Shrewsbury. The former Sythree (for those who don't know, that's my former user name) will become Syfour:D
You can still come and have a die-in on the neighbours' grass!!!

hey at least you can shout at your surveyor..
19 times since 1985. 12 of those years was in the Army though which gobbled up over half of the moves. :) Just completed last move 2 months ago. We have no more moves planned.

Hi Ed, I feel your pain and am sending you happy thoughts and big hugs.
I have moved so many times, it is confusing when I have ot list past addresses on forms, it makes me look like a tramp! Mind you in 2002 I even got bored with the UK and moved abroad for a about eight months, before returning to go back to Uni for my PGCE. Being an Army brat means I got used to moving house fairly often, I even managed to go to thirteen schools by the age of sixteen.
My last move was to Weston to live with the Wife and it took two car trips from Plymouth to get my stuff here and then a train journey to collect the SV. Funny, I have been here two years now and would normally be getting itchy feet, but I am just starting to feel settled. Damn, she made an honest woman out of me after all of these years!
Anyway, good luck with the move. Be careful moving heavy stuff if you have an injury because you really do not want to make it worse. Take care and once all the dust has settled and the boxes are unpacked, you can sit in your favourite chair and relax with a nice cool drink.
I moved between about 12 houses in 3 years - not recommended.

We last moved ten years ago into a bit of a run down country place with a few outbuildings. The previous owner had retired and was downsizing and asked if he could leave a few "bits and pieces" he didn't want behind. These turned out to be the garden tractor, several trailers, a caravan, various ladders/scaffolding/boards and countless small items. I'm still making exciting discoveries in the depths of the barn now.... God help the next occupant when we move on!

I would have loved that, finding some old tools etc, billiant :)
I once rented a council garage and it had some old timers (who must have died) bit and bobs left in there, still have some of the stuff now.

By my count, eight times since 1998. More if you count bringing stuff home for the summer from university, and helping other people move.

I never have. Still live in the fist house I ever bought.
However I have had to move my dad a couple of time. The worse being the last time as he was downsizing from a 6 bedroom house with 3 acres of gardens/pool etc to a 2 bedroom bungalow.
So the problems being stuff that the removal people would normally take had to go to the dump (Sorry lancs county council, of course I mean recycling centre). 3 piece suite, study contents, 4 bedrooms (beds/wardrobes etc)
Right younger and twin brothers has a fleet of vans, useless the dump won't permit trade vans. Only one car has a trailer hitch. useless our trailer is double axle and they won't allow it. Borrow small trailer
When dad retired his files went with him and occupied one of the hen cabins, current case had to go to the new address, close went on the fire. It burned for over a week, and bulk paper is a sod to burn. The removal people would not shift the heavy stuff out the workshop (Lathes, milling machines, car bench jig etc) so that had to go on the trailers.
Funniest part was his final move, removal men shift stuff, he sat in my car like something out the Clampets, his valuable worldly goods on the back seat/boot, three shotguns and two rifles stuck between his knees.
While it was a pain in the backside at the time, it is remembered fondly as he died less than 3 months after
i dread it its 3 years since we moved in and are talking about moving again soon in 4 years i have moved 4 times doesn't sound bad does it 3 times in 3 months months then a years break then moved again

Ed.....I feel your pain and so will Strethie. We have about 8 bags/boxes to unpack after moving in here a month ago, but at least have got the house and all the rooms sorted now. It's a bleeding nightmare. This is my 12th move in 15 years and it's not nice.
Luckily for me and Dan, we had the help of some fabulous orgers, but after everyone left and Dan was back in work, I was shocked at how much there still was to do and it absolutely knackered me. When I got to the new house after handing the old keys in, I pretty much collapsed in a heap and didn't move.
Worst is, my back has been making me cry in pain some nights since then and is just getting worse, so I really do not want to do this again...EVER.
Ed, don't overdo it or at least give yourself a rest day if you can. I couldn't and I'm paying for it now!
Hope the new house is all you want it to be though, so congrats on that! :-)
Oh and I forgot. Two weekends ago, I travelled 255 miles to help my Mum move from a house to a second floor flat (without lift). Left at 5.30 in the morning. Got there for ten o'clock, finished shifting 5 van loads of stuff, taking old Sofa's and stuff to the skip, at around 10pm. By the time I had showered, eaten and had a couple of cans of Guiness it was past midnight. Up at 6.30 for the 5 hour drive home. TIRED was an understatement.

Nearly three months in and we still have plenty of boxes that need unpacking. We worked for two weeks every night after work and all through the weekends to get the house decorated. Soon realised we were walking dead. Now it get's done as and when. After all, we won't be moving again anytime soon so why the rush. :)
Biggest problem was Anne's research notes. She did a PhD... 5 years of research notes up the loft - and then taught at Exeter Uni - so yet more research notes - and then did a private research project, so even more... they are so damn heavy. Loft access ain't great, I cursed the damn boxes when I shifted them up, now I cursed yesterday when I shifted them down that loft ladder and then downstairs, into the back of the car, and then into the container. My poor knees!!!!!
And then, on last trip back, I had to put the pushbikes back in the garage, I was so tired I yanked the garage door up with er rather less care than usual and it came off the runners, I can't fix it so now I have to pay somebody to fix the door in a house we'll be living in for all of 3 more days. Grrrrrrrr

I know an orger (err almost your age) still in the house he grew up in.

Yeah......like men :p (sorry for derail, just HAD to say it!!)
ooooo moving i can relate to this one moved so many times over the years i have lost count now.
hence we have learned to not keep junk about, hardly put stuff in the loft as last time we moved the loft alone caused us headaces let alone the rest of the house
Ed - it's a positive experience, really it is. You're decluttering which all the style gurus say is a good thing. You'll feel better for it!
And it'll save having to do it, or worse having your children do it, when you're too infirm to take control yourself.
Well we're in. What a nightmare. I feel totally exhausted but am really happy. Just need Drew to do a die-in on the neighbour's grass and it really will feel like home!! We now live in a village called Baschurch in north Shropshire, about 10 miles north west of Shrewsbury. We can hear the cows mooing in the field down the lane, and tonight the owls were going it some:cool: Pookie, our ginger tom, killed a rabbit so he is plainly feeling settled already:D Makes a change, it used to be mice:rolleyes:
Surrounded by boxes - but I lost count of the number of trips to the recycling facilty and to the Severn Hospice charity shop. Still chucking stuff out, too. Peeps, never store crap, if you haven't worn it or used it in the last year, you never will, so be ruthless - I can see that we should have been. Doesn't matter if it was granny's, get rid of it.
But we're in!!!!! Bike arrives Monday - it was unrideable cos I've dismanted the back end and I didn't have time to rebuild it before we moved. So the bloke who deals with our container storage took it and put it in our container until I sort out some space in the garage. Very close to Wales here, it's a quick hop up to Ellesmere, then to Overton-on-Dee, down the hill, and mecca awaits:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:
