View Full Version : Laptop charger woes
Aargh!! These things drive me crazy.
The original power lead for my laptop started to spit and fizzle then it died on me.
So following advice I bought a new cable with a hundred different end thingies, one of which fitted my laptop.
Now I've lost the one and only end thingy that fitted and it looks like I'll have to fork out £35 for a new full set of lead and 99 other end thingies that I don't need. No, I can't buy just the one end thingy that fits!
Anyone need a job lot of end thingies that might fit their laptop?
I soldered on a new end thingy when my laptop charger started to fail.
Get the ends from maplins for a quid.
Looks like Maplins only sell complete sets - that's where I got the first one from.
Or did they see me coming?
depends what the end thing looks like, mine is

Can't take a photo of mine, 'cos I've lost it :(
But it had a nice yellow end.

What?! You're supposed to be a mod! lol
Should be a sticker on the bottom or somewhere
I know how to use them darling, not the technical specifications!
Bit like bikes

Yes, I figured that out, that's why I photoed mine instead of asking you to. But if it's a simple round one with +ve on the inside & -ve on the outside (or the otherway round, I forget) then you can definitely get a replacement. You just need to know the size, or take your laptop in & try them.
Have you still got the old oem one, or did you bin it?
Binned it, or rather the tech guys at work did.
It's yellow and an outy if you know what I mean. I've got the middle bit on the lap top and the end thingy needs to go round that. Does that make any sense?
It's a ThinkPad R series

Like this one maybe?

oooh yes a bit like that. Mine was just the little bit on the end, not the box part, but that might solve the problem. Thanks

Messie, I've got a few of these connectors knocking around. I know what size my laptop takes, so yours must be similar.
How does it connect to the cable from the adaptor, two little wire pins?
If so I may have what you need
Most Thinkpads use the same type of charger, they have two diffrent models a 65W and 90W depending on size of laptop, the plug is big and would not come normaly with the multi plug chargers
This is what ive had on my Thinkpad X61 and X200 laptops, most have the same unless they are old laptops.

if its smaller than that then its an old charger
The end of the 'universal' cable (I think that's what it's called) has 2 pin holes in, about 2mm across and 5mm apart. This is the universal end that fits into the 100 other end thingies

I've got the main charger bit and following instructions, it's turned to 20V (that's the black box bit)

i know, i would have just got the correct adapter in the first place
But that's because you know lots of useful stuff about pooters.
I know a lot about other stuff, that's not always so useful

See if your model number matches.
I've got plenty of tose end thingies in the garage, but just checked, none are wide enough and would not handle the current
That looks about right and a reasonable price. I'll got for that and be more careful with it this time.
Thanks for the help guys x

Just check your laptop model number matches those stated.
Dont want another thread starting 'laptop blue smoke, is this normal' ;)
LOL, I think you're beginning to understand me x

Dunno if you've got this sorted yet but I got a branded laptop adapter - whole thing, off Amazon about a year ago for £15 incl p&p........ have a search on there under your laptop brand/model etc.
Good luck!
