View Full Version : Refrigerator Questions
My fridge has just started making funny noises. Every now and a gain a motor type noise would cut in and out which I guess is thermostat controlled. Just recently this noise is permanently on and the fridge doesn't seem particularly cool. It is a combined fridge freezer and the frozen items are still frozen. Do fridges need to be re-gassed from time to time (like aircon)???
If it's been shifted from pillar to post then you should usually let the gasses settle.
Is it well stocked? I tend to find that if the fridge is nearing empty it seems to be noiser, time to visit the beer fairies my friend!

It's been in the same place for the last 4 years.

No, but it never has been.
its fubar'd - mines has just done the same - you could regass it but a lot places won't do this. Its a real bummer when the freezer still works too!
time to go shopping

Possibly the compressor. Mine did this and the local small repairs guy said it would be more expensive to fix than to replace.

It means that it has iced up and this has stopped air circulating over the element thingy in the freezer so that fan is working harder to circulate the cold air it can get to from the freezer to the fridge. Defrost the freezer ASAP. Then make sure you defrost it regularly. At the moment it'll be using lots of electric too.
I'm not a freezer expert but this happened to mine twice.
And if you don't keep your freezer full than fill in any empty space with screwed up newspapers. Freezers are more efficient full and fridges benefit from some space so don't over fill it.
And don't forget to vacuum the outer back of it and underneath every few months.
Cheers LPH. I'll give that a go first before I start chucking money at it.
ive got some new trainers if that helps?

Try the following-
Cheap Fix:
* if single of double stack - pull out so you can access the back - Feel the compressor (Small Black Top Hat) is it red hot at the top? - brush down the Coil at the back - the thin black tubed & Finned item that will be full of bum fluff and or crap - this will bring the compressor temp down. Also look for a drip tray which has a tube running into it - clean this out and remove any water.
* Then try as LPH suggested - defrosting - allow for all ice to melt and have towels ready to soak up any water. 24hrs should be ok. After moving the unit - leave for a few hours to let the Oil in the compressor settle.
Switch the fridge back on after all that - if the problem persists it may be that your system is low on refrigerant - ie leaking or the compressor is on its way out or the thermostat U/S. White goods are cheap to replace - unless its a top quality make or fitted into your kitchen units - normally cheaper to replace than change the compressor. Stats and re gas are cheaper but normally lead to other problems later on. Always remember to leave some room between the food in the fridge and the back of the fridge - helps circulation ;)
I am not an expert on Domestic stuff - but I was/ am an Industrial Chiller Engineer.
