Basically any information that can be placed on PNC can be flagged up on ANPR.

I drove by an DVLA ANPR camera in Edinburgh a few weeks ago, knowing that my MOT only had a few days to run. When I got home I got my old MOT to book a test, and found out my MOT had ran out the day before !!!
Got the car MoT`d and never heard anything from DVLA.

there used to be a problem that the ANPR computer is not real time and information was likely to be months out of date and therefore most coppers found it a useless bit of kit.
I presume that the database are still not real time, but likely to be out by a week or so. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Do they hold a list of flagged vehicles (for whatever reason eg. tax, insurance, mot driver etc.) or all vehicles. As in would they recognise a non existent reg no?

It's not bad now, normally only a couple of days, if any, difference. The only thing that tends to be slightly out is insurance details but we can get round that by contacting MIB and they can find out straight away if someone is insured. Things like tax and MOT is held on the system anyway, it just flags when they run out.

I've forgotten a number of times that the MOT on my bike was up. What I don't understand is why now that the DVLA registered keepers log is on computer and why MOT's are now computerised they can't marry the two up and send me out a reminder a couple of weeks before the MOT expires?

+1 but why can't they tie it in with the tax disc renewal, so its due a month before the tax is up

Yep.
Been a while since I disagreed with you MBK but I'm afraid I'm going to have to here, well at least partially.
An ANPR system won't alert (produce an alarm) on a vehicle if the only thing wrong is the MOT has expired.
The MOT expiry date is contained within the data held on the Police National Computer (PNC). ANPR systems don't do a PNC VE (Vehicle enquiry) check unless there is an alert against another database. The live systems do a check against the PNC FT (Fast track) but that is only to check if there is a report against it (for example stolen or used in crime).
Offences such as no insurance, no tax or no keeper are highlighted by ANPR systems because there are specific lists of vehicles held on the database of these vehicles.
MOT offences are detected by ANPR officers because a car alerts against another database and the system then does a VE check and the officer can then see the MOT expiry date when they read the PNC screen, but it's up to them to notice it, the system won't tell them automatically.

So :-k I just need to come up with a plausible number plate that's never been issued and that will get around ANPR? :p

Unfortunately not, we've thought of that as well.... but I might be in danger of spilling a few to many beans here.

Or, store the dates in your mobile phone calender and set a reminder.

I was riding sh1te old bikes for 30 odd years and never forgot to MOT my bike, and I have a memory like a seive. Some years I'd need to MOT three or four bikes and still managed to get them done in time.
I use this strange object called a diary - you use them to remind you to do certain tasks on or before certain days of the year - you should try one, they really work.

I would never forget to MOT something that I drove or rode on a regular basis, and I don't need a diary to remember, the SV is 15th May, the XT is 28th May and my car is 30th July, all off the top of my head. If I was ever going to forget to MOT anything, it would be the wife's car ;)

Yes I tried a diary once. Wrote everything down in it so I wouldn't forget. Only trouble was I put it down one day and forgot where I put it...
You might think I'm being smart, but thats a true story. What made it worse was it had a load of work releated stuff in it. And no I don't work for the government.

I use a wall planner, unfortunately it's in the kitchen and it also has all my other activities on it, such as trackdays, ride outs, trips to events and other enjoyable activities. Reminding my wife constantly that I haven't got a free weekend now until the end of August isn't always a smart move.......

I forgot to MOT my bike recently, only because, although it's an 08, it was a Cat D write off and by the time I got it back on the road and MOT'd, the tax was out of synch with the MOT. :(

Don't worry about it. My wife got stopped for speeding a couple of years ago (by one of my colleagues) and when she had to produce her documents found out that she had been due an MOT six months earlier.... I was double unpopular!
-Ralph-

I was double unpopular!
Funny that one isn't it. I wasn't too popular on Friday when I booked the tests for the SV and the XT and thought, hang on, when was the last time her car was MOT'd?
"Oh thanks! So you can remember when your bl00dy bikes need an MOT, but not my car!"
"Yeah, now whose car did you just say it was exactly?"
If it was left down to my wife to look after the maintenance she'd be driving around with no MOT, not having had a service, with bald tyres. She'd probably have tax and insurance to be fair, but only because those have reminders through the post, not because she'd actually looked at the date on the windscreen or looked at her insurance certificate.

Yeah, I told her it was her fault for buying a cheap Skoda that only came with six months tax....

I had all mine set up in my Outlook calendar at work, which I look at every day. Then changed jobs...
One of those spooky "I wonder" moments last week had me fish out the MoT certs and, yup, one of the cars ran out that day! Damn and blast. Earliest appointment I could get to fit my work commitments two days away. Thankfully I could work from home so it was not too much of a problem.
I wish we got a postal reminder too. Now set up on Outlook calendar on my new company's PC of course!

Hence why I suggested using a mobile phone. That way you dont need to make sure you will be using the same computer in a years time, and most folk always keep their phone handy so less chance of loosing it, like a diary, ;)
And, you can set an alarm for the week before etc.

I think most people change their mobile phones a lot more often than they change their computer.

True, but when you transfer all your numbers you can transfer all the calender events too. I done it on mine a few weeks back.

As you could when you change computer, but with the computer most people would have to do it less often.
And transferring on a computer is much less dependant upon what make and model you are moving from and to.
I don't get why using the phone is better than using the computer

Alternatively look at your MOT certificate. On the bottom left hand corner is a sticky label with all the necessary information on it. Stick it in the tip right hand corner of your windscreen (obviously not in the swept area) or if you don't want it on show inside the drivers door where the lock is. Bikes I admit are a bit harder, mine are on the plastic bag under the seat along with the tax disc.

Somebody mentioned that earlier in the thread and it was the first time I noticed it on the certificate. I'll defo use that when my car gets it's first MOT and on my wifes car when it gets it's new MOT tomorrow. It will do nothing for my wife as she will completely ignore it, indeed, if I don't tell her it's there she probably won't notice, but at least I'll see it each time I clean her windscreen.

Because, as someone on this thread mentioned, they stored things on the computer but when they changed jobs they left that computer and forgot, then their MOT ran out.
Most folk carry their phone all the time but not their computer, and if you go on holiday or don`t use your computer for a while, its easier to forget, because it relies on you switching the computer on.
It was only a suggestion, and everyones different, don`t sweat it :)

I dont trust Microshaft`s security so wouldn`t use anything like that on the tinternet.
Maybe i`m too paranoid though.

I wanted to start using Google's calendar, but it's options for recurring appointments were so rubbish compared with Outlook :( I gave up

The recurring appointment with the windows live seems ok.
Dunno about the security issues mentioned earlier but the calendar(s) are marked as private so unless the account is hacked then only I will know that i have to take the dug to the vet on wednesday <oops. let it out the bag>

Smart **** indeed! ;) Smartest idea so far, can sync with computer and phone, and doesn't need transferred ever! That's what I'm going to do.
