View Full Version : front tyre 120/60/17 or 120/70/17?

hi from a newbe
i have just swapped my fazer 600 for a 99 sv 650 naked,as soon as i rode the sv i had to have it brill bikes with great useable grunty power.
the front tyre needs replacing its a 120/60/17 i have been told that a 120/70/17 will be just as good and there seems to be alot more of the larger profile tyre to choose from,have any of you chaps used the larger profile and how did it differ from the smaller frofile.

i use a 60 and the difference is the turn-in rate with the 70 turning quicker.
U need to mod the front fender for it to clear the profile as the 60 is tight to the fender.
I like the 60 profile but the 70 is a supersport and super bike profile so if ur just doing weekend warrioring its better

With avon storm I prefer the 70 but it is small change. Not noticeable really if you are going from a different tyre anyway.
Numbers on side only vaguely resemble the size of the tyre anyway.
As far as I know plenty minitwin guys using 120/70 on stock fender.

I swapped to the 70 profile when I put a gixer front end on my bike and I have noticed that it tips into corners much faster :-) Although this might be partly due to having different forks on the bike.
As well as making the bike handle a bit sharper, it might be a good idea if you do lots of fast riding as you'll have a larger area of the tyre in contact with the road at high lean angles.

SRAD forks are about an inch short, which helps too :-D

the other option is to get a 110 tire is tad more expensive but has the same effect.
If your a speed nut it'll reduce stability also

70.Much better
I had a 110/70 fitted when i got the bike have just changed it back to standard 120/60 and can't really notice a great difference.

My mates done it on a bandit and prefers it. The turn in pace suits his riding style

Yep, most use Pirelli Diablo or SuperCorsa and these arent available in 120/60.
it might also render your insurance invalid. check with insurers. but to be fair assessors only really look at the tread depth when there is a claim.

thanks for all the replies,i have just had the front tyre swopped from the 60 profile to the 70,did not think it would make much difference but it has made a huge difference the bike is not so twitchy feels much more stable into the corners the bike now feels like its on rails now and i can throw it into corners which i could not do before, realy pleased with the way it handles now but did have to remove the fender extender as it just touched the tyre.

Don't forget to raise the tubes about 0.5cm above the upper triple clamp.This way you will get the correct caster nagle,because by switching to 70 tire the front end gets lifted up slightly(higher tire profile).

i switched to a 70 because of the tyre choices, much better handling anyway.
dont forget that if the tyre just about clears the fender, at speed it may rub on it. best to have a bit more clearance than a 'just fits'.
also dropping the forks through about 5mm will improve the handling even more but if it gets a bit twitchy at speed on bumpy roads then go back to standard...... or get a decent damper like i did :D

I ran 70 tire before and after the GSXr front end conversion.Never had clearance issues.I didn't have a fender extender though.As for damper,never experienced wobble with stock SV front end either.I think that if one experiences wobble on an SV the first thing he should do is adjust the suspension to his weight and riding style.Then try not to hold tight the steering.Damper would be the last to do IMO.

Yes damper is thing you fit for safety, not a cure.

i was quite happy with mine being 'loose' but when i had a tank slapper on the wrong side of the road at high revs in 3rd i had no more power to 'power' out of it. i fitted a matris with 15 settings. setting 1 for town use, setting 3 anywhere else :) just a safety thing :D
(btw i was trying the damper out for the 1st time when i hit that deer the other week) ((my mate said it worked fine)) :smt082

Like I say, safety not cure. I was being absolute d*ck on a very bumpy back road other day and it was not slapping, because my suspension is right. With stock shock it was wagging its head every bump.

mine has been like that for 3 years, it was only that one lock to lock slapper that made me get one :p previous to that i have always said they are not needed with a proper setup.
those that have had a 'proper slapper' (leave it !!!! :smt033 ) will know why i got one.
