View Full Version : Virgin Broadband 50Mb anyone ?

I hate virgin, but me and the other half have moved into her parents house while we save a deposit to buy our own house.

I used to be with BE for my broadband ADSL 24Mb and was getting around 1.9 -2.2 MBps/down load speed and it was unlimited and was very happy with that.

her parents have got 7 months left on there virgin contract, but they are only on a 10Mb connection and you get throttled like Mad if you download more than 1GB in a day.
Its stupid as I normally download anything from 50GB to 300GB a week.

With the 50Mb connection its unlimited downloads (At the moment) so i have asked them to upgrade it to 50Mb.

So anyone else on the 50Mb Package and what do you think of it ?

i just went with 20mb in the end,

i used to be with tiscal max speed 4 meg, so if i over download with virgin now i get throttled to 5meg ( they throttle you 75%) same as i was befor, and if your downloading by Bittorrent you wont geet 50 meg through a torrent, but youll most likly see 1.0-1.5,

couldnt see a massive advantage of going to 50 meg to be fair over 20,

i done use bit torrent, Torrents are for armature downloaders ;)

i get what ever speed my connection can give.

EG: One Blu ray Movie is 5-25GB so if you download that then for the rest of the day/night your on 5Mb ...

thats not good enough for me lol i would be pulling my hair out.

I am on the 50Mb package, it works as it should

I too hate virgin, but have no choice. I cannot get ADSL despite only being about 4 miles from the local exchange. BT have 3 times visited me and gone, oooohhh sorry and gone away.

There is no throttling on the 50Mb package, I never suffered when I was on the 20Mb. To be honest the real reason for upgrading was to get better upload, it is still pathetic at 1.5Mb.

I am also a tester for the Ofcom/SamsKnow performance measurement project and have one of their boxes installed off my router. I would hope virgin would know who is in the program and prioritise their traffic. But I guess that would be naughty.

What are the Dlink N routers like Tim ? Did you get one of these with yours ?

timwilky
27-05-10, 08:51 AM
No I got nothing, just a new Docsis 3 cable modem.

TBH I begrudged having to pay the man to turn out and swap the modem over, I don't know why it cannot be self install as in the past for swapouts.

Still it did not work properly and took a while to sync as it should. You get the usual VM crap of wanting to connect your PC direct to the modem to test. But as I have only bastion firewalls and not PC based I was somewhat reluctant. He was even more confused when the box that was eventually connected simply gave him a bash shell and no gui interface.

hindle8907
27-05-10, 09:00 AM
Yeah iv had to pay 55 quid for someone to come out on Saturday ?!?

I said why isnt it self install if its only a modem and she said they have to do something out side too but couldn't give me any more information on it.
Buggers.

i got the dlink router, its worked no worrys so far, only gripe i have is the key cant be changed it seems, its written on the bottem of the box and there is no menu for it to be changed,

youd be pulling your hair out on throttled connection? the throttled connection is more than you were getting full speed with be,

if you can afford the price, and your gonna use it then go for it, especially if the parents are paying the line charge side of it, (phone) and you just pay the net,

never used usenet , know idea where to get started with that,

,

How do you work that out lol ?

I think your geting Bits and Bytes mixed up .

beabert

Just do what i do and download after 9pm to avoid the traffic management, yer pirate :D

He meant 10mb is throtlled to 2mb hence faster than your BE account.

hindle8907
27-05-10, 09:18 AM
yeah so when im throttled to 2Mb im only geting 200kBps/dl .... thats not faster than 1.9-2.2MB which i got 247 with BE isit.
its x10 slower lol.

beabert
27-05-10, 09:21 AM
Splitting hairs at 0.2mb difference, your one of thoughs £2 isn't £1.99 people aren't you lol.

I get 230kbs ish throttled.

hindle8907
27-05-10, 09:24 AM
BE was 24Mb and i got 1900 to 2200 kB/s < 247

Now Virgin 10Mb i get 1200 kB/s but after a 1.5 GB download get taken down to 2Mb which gives 200-250 kB/s.

so how can the throttled be faster than i was geting with BE lol .

its not a small difference its x10 slower.

beabert
27-05-10, 09:28 AM
Oh, now i know why your moaning lol. I read the first post and thought from you were getting a **** speed from BE lol.

Stop quoting in bytes and sick to bits :-p Im contemplating 50 myself.

Line charge? What is that all about. I don't have a land line as such, don't want one, would never use one. Instead I have SIP phone with 4 accounts connected to it, gives me a Preston/Chorley/Manchester/Liverpool numbers which I use for business and never pay a penny on, simply answer the incomming call. The house phones and daughters phone are all on other SIP accounts. My average telephone bill is about £5/month. When I had a virgin phone it was £11/month rental and about £15/month call costs.

On 20mb you can download 7 GB in the day before you get throttled and 3.5 GB in the evening before they throttle.
and the second you go over them thresholds they throttle.

for the avrage joe it is ok but i download 8GB files at a time.

Virgin Media have a crap upload speed, but I don't pay the bills so I don't moan.

We pay £37 a month for the 20MB package where the 50MB package is available for £38 on the Virgin website but my dad is too lazy to upgrade. The upload speeds with Virgin are rubbish which get on my nervs, if I had the money I'd get my own line installed with BT on Be as they're so much better.

No, I even paid extra years ago for a second IP address off Telepest and that was revoked when virgin set their policies. for my stuff I have to use dynamic dns

Annoying, they will not permit proper IP addressing. My company own's a full class B and I could quite easily be allocated a subnet off it. But virgin would not propagate the route.

50Mbit? Wow! Whataya do with that!? The best I get is 1.5Mbit on ADSL that came to town 3 years ago and is all that is available. Before that it was 256k on two way satellite or just plain dial-up which never ran better than 32k. Sometimes I get 3Mbit on the mobile connection depending on the towers being used but often <64k - happy if I can get 128k out of it.
