View Full Version : Benelli Tornado - New Carbon fibre

I needed to have an upgraded clutch driveshaft replaced which was a major job. Gearbox, clutch out of one side, and water pump and altenator out from the other side, with the driveshaft in the middle. That took about 3 hours. It hasn't failed, but I didn't want it going bang on me in France and destroying the engine and my trip  but all sorted. Usually a £900 job inc labour, but god I love dads sometimes

So off I trotted sunday morning where my dad and Colin were already hard at work playing with his CBX1000 ProDrive getting ready for his own road trip. Plan was to swap the driveshaft gear, new oil and filter, and fit my carbon fibre, and make a reg plate up after my reg transfer. Heres some piccies :)

Clutch etc off exposing bottom of the rods and crank (Nurses semi...)

http://images19.fotki.com/v1612/photos/4/48802/3559378/Image014-vi.jpg

That gear sprocket in the top middle, in above shot, that and its rod had to come out. The rod has to be knocked through from the other side and pulled out the above side. The gear then comes off, but between the engine is a load of drive gears inside the engine, and if these dropped as we removed the rod, the bike engine was history so nervy times. But luckily is swapped over ok :D You can see the rod inside that circle on the top left in the below shot. In that gap to the right in the top picture, I could see my rods and crankshaft. It gave me a semi.

Other side where rods pushed through. Luckily a knackard wire was found (connected to sidestand) so sorted. Also some loose bolts on the altenator were found. Worth doing this alone then really as for sure it would go in France.

After making a "legal" plate up, I needed to order a proper one. Instead of D4 MOB, say hello to D4MO B

Also had a test fit for the panniers :D

Mehinks I need some shorter bungies :rolling:

Im going to cover the tail unit where the panniers are in duct tape, and then put some of the non slip matting on to protect the paintwork :)

Missis aint coming ;) Just a boys trip away. Sooo can't wait :D :D

Cheers quiff they look a good idea. Im gonna get some 60cm bungees first, but if they are still a bit too long then will deffo get those clips.

How much stuff are you bringing!!!! They do have shops in France y'know. I have already worked out that for my 11 day French trip (Alps next month - I decided not to camp) I can get everything I need in a tank bag and small tail pack. Yes I'll probs smell but the French won't notice;)

OMG - thats all i need to say

i loved your bike before now its just the best PORN bike there is

 Cheers STR, hopefully i'll get some more carbon later in the year. Want the plastic rad ducting covers (black plastic below seat), but then I also want the carbon dash, and possibly the rear fan unit surround. Thats quite a lot though, i should just go out and buy an LE dammit

Ed, quite a bit, I like my comforts. Nahh panniers have clothes, and the top bag has my sleeping bag, flip flops, waterproof jacket/trousers etc. I think they are 40l panniers. Can't fit a tank bag as its a plastic tank and too much effort.

I like a fresh t-shirt n pants after a days riding  Plus we're gonna stop for a couple of days somewhere and enjoy relaxing. Only taking 1 pair of jeans, 5 or so t-shirts, duds n socks, a jumper, basic tools, sleeping bag and waterproofs really.

Looks sweet as... the plate looks terrible though, not a fan of plates that have had the letter messed about with, I think it would look 10x better as just D4 MOB... pretty much gaurantees an instant pull too around here.

Benellis probably have better paint work, but be extra careful with duct tape. I'd just go with the non slip matting.
Instead of buying stuff from a bike shop you can find alternatives in Homebase and B&Q with more on a roll and cheaper, if you haven't already got some.

BTW an edge of caution with the plate, the French don't mind their own peeps having mars bar plates, and funny arrangements of letters, but once you have the Gullible Barsteward sticker on it, they might like to give you a scare ;-)

I put duct tape on my sv wayy back.. and it never came off properly /./. even with wd 40 etc etc.#

I would use just the webbing to protect.

I know i'll be protecting the bike with loads of tape and padding. Not having those bags ruin my nice paintwork

G - Im not oo happy with it. Got hom last night thinking, "its a bit big". Put it on the bike and its the same size as a legal one. Called them this morning and they are going to send me out a new one (only goign down to 8x6) and i've also asked for plain black text too as I agree, it looks a bit chav and I was a bit dissapointed. Only problem with D4 MOB is that I sound like a gangster leader  Where as D4MO B is actually personal (as in Damo B). Hopefully being only slightly smaller i'll get away with it and plead the 0 being a zero ;) ha ha. Or thats what the bloke on the stall at a car show said [-o<

I have K14 GSP in 6.5 x 6.5... The letter size and spacing is still legal though. The size of the actual yellow background is irrelevant.

Although I think 6.5 was the smallest you could go with 3 digits across so I guess your letter sizes are smaller too as your 4 across now?

Daimo
28-05-10, 11:38 AM
Nahh becuase my old original plate was GN55 accross the top so theres room for 4.

Its more the fact if I go any smaller the reflector hanger will look odd, and it'll also not be big enough to meet the screw holes. I might stick it on yet, but i think the forces on the back of the plate at higher speeds might rip it off.

Gonna wait for the new one to arrive next week so i'll leave the legal one on there for the moment.

The only dodgey part is the letter spacing between 4 and M. Ahh it only comes out every so often anyway ;)

I've seen a few D4 plates around the car scene.

Went out for a ride on Sunday with my dad and our friend.

Tornado Tre (mine, boggo standard version)
Tornado RS (less than 30 in the UK)
Tornado LE (less than 150 in the world)
Spot the differences ;)

Yeah his is the LE with the TRE plate on it. The picture of the tank with the carbon under the pain is his LE.

The RS paint is really nice with a pearl in it. These 3 are actually (IMO) the best of the entire range and best colours :D

A228 - B2162 - A21 - B2089 into Rye. Then out the other side towards Lydd on the A259.

Dyzio - Err I don't find the indicators too bad. But I use them all the time (to overtake etc) so its 2nd nature really. I have more trouble finding the horn which is directly above it???? Dunno why.

STR -Brake cylinder is aftermarket one he put on there. Its ok, but not for me. I've deffo got the best lid, my old man wants one as well now

Dunno either, must be an Italian thing. But I've noticed the controls being in the usual way round on some Falco's and RSV's.

Google maps? A228 from Kings Hill then you can follow it down. I'd do a route map but dunno any sites?

STR, yeah its a talked about topic on the Nelly site. I've not seen the link yet (can't get on at work). £7k though for a damaged one is mental, but then they are holding around £10k atm.

Now the green/silver tornado has also sold out, the prices seem to be rising again :D At one point you could even find a 5k miler Tornado for £2500-£3k sometimes.
