I put my money where my mouth is and bought one of these, the 16gb wifi only model for home use. It's bloody great. Normally I get to use stuff like this free paid for by work but this time decided to buy my own and live with it as much as I could.

I'm typing this post on it, typing is surprisingly good considering it's a virtual keyboard. I can type as fast as I normally do (pretty fast) on my laptop keyboard without errors.

Games are fun, I'm loving watching the content from iTunes podcasts and especially the ITunesU university course material.

It's also a fantastic device for browsing photos.

Get one, you'll love it.

Its not the friggin same tech it doesnt run a heavy buggy windows tablet os which have never worked right , it battery lasts over 10 hours, its multi touch not a point and press with a sh1tty stylus, the apps .....omg why am i even trying to explain myslef, you have got two i.t technicians here who have both been out and purchased the devices and both have the same opinion that ipad is an excellent device.

I can totally understand mac owners getting miffed, it's like the ugly baby syndrome if its your baby you think its lovely the reason i rekon mac owners get so flusterd is due to the amount of cash they have waisted. lol

It's allright. Mac aren't supposed to be for everyone. The are only supposed to be the best computers. As for me, being on both sides for long enough, it is a no brainer to get them, especially since they're way cheaper on the long run.

I really dont like apple apart from the ipod, and i hate there computers (over priced cr&p) but the GF's dad has just got the top specc ipad 64gb gps and all that and i actually using it i started to get what it was about. its never going to replace the lap top as its just not as good as a lap top to type on or as powerful. But as a web browser its brill the boot up time is almost non existent and the battery life was great. He also had it linked in to a squeeze box so he could control the music on his NAS and play different things in every room of the house and also stream napster through it as well so thats cool.

so i now sort of get the ipad. i just still dont get the price. £700 for the top spec one is a joke, top spec meaning lower than most basic laptops.

saw one in the flesh today. as it is, utterly useless. if you could write/draw on it with one of those pen things it would be dead useful for taking notes in lectures/meetings and carrying data and pictures around. much more portable than a laptop but not much use for typing

there called styluses(which you can get if you feel the need) but judging by your post I think its best you don't get one as you clearly wouldn't know what to do with it.

I'm sure if we had to judge all gadgets by the price of the top spec model we'll find that everything out there is overpriced. The mainstream model (which is very difficult to find due to high demand) is £429 which is reasonable.

You are looking at it from the wrong perspective. It was never intended to replace a laptop. What I have found so far is that I tend to power up my computers less during the weekend and use the tablet instead for those routine tasks like checking emails, weather or news or getting that info off the internet.

My 3 year old uses it as a colour book and really enjoys the interactive stories at bed time. I use it in the kitchen sometimes and my wife no longer switches on the TV to check the latest on Sky or BBC News. I'm sure even IM will be a lot more practice once they will release iOS4 w/ multitasking this autumn.

the 16gb wifi version in the US is 320 pounds, over here its 429 as flymo said its mostly to do with the exchange rates why we are paying that 100 pounds extra.
the components alone must come near too £180-200 mark for the lower spec units.
I do agree that the top spec ones are expensive and may be a little over priced lol.

maxinc just jailbreak it, it takes seconds and you can multi task, download every app for free and customize the device however you want, if you feel the need to support the developer for the good apps you can do so just go download from the app-store as usual, if you download a crap app you wont have that ripped off feeling you can delete it and wont be out of pocket and be happy that you have the freedom to try things before purchasing.
If you ever need too you can just connect it to the computer and restore it back to the factory settings if your worried about that side of things.

Download any app thats in the app store for free try them if you like support the developer and go download from appstore.
Lots of cool 3rd party apps/games that are not allowed by apple
Lots of emulators from snes/N64/ps1 ect ect
Multitasking/widgets/tweeks/addons/cygadgets/toys
Total Customisation (from icons,system sounds, system colours /fonts , themes /keyboards all sorts of stuff)
the things to look into are SSH, Repositories,terminal sbs settings and that should get you started.
all this applies for ipad and iphone and the sites I have listed are resources for both just research them sites and all will become clear.

backup your ipad before you start anything ;) as if anything goes wrong you can allways restore back.
alot of the stuff is iphone specific but lots of ipad content is getting added each day.
did you get the new iphone4 or do you have an iphone ? and is your ipad 3g ? if not i can give you the info and the app to tether iphones 3g on the ipad when your out and about.

Yes, I have the iPhone 4 and the iPad 3G 16G. I kind of like they way are organised now with iTunes. Will I still be able to sync the iPhone with iTunes and MobileMe after Jailbreaking? What about the iOS updates?

yeah you will still sync with itunes fine you can even download cracked apps from websites and sync them over itunes if you wish, or you can just do it all from the device.
Updates wipe everything to do with jailbreaks. but all you do is when one is released wait for the dev's to release a version which doesnt strip you iphone of all your jailbreak software.
mobileme iv never used but don't see it being a problem and have never seen anything on the forums about it.

I guess the annoying thing would be ... if I happen to not like it and be forced to restore the iPhone, I will have to type in all the passwords again to my email accounts and all the wifi hotspots I use ...
