View Full Version : Which Netbook?

So whilst others discuss the good and bad points of the I-Pad, I'm in the market for a netbook. So...
Small and light, not bothered which version of Microsoft it has (Not willing to learn a new OS) not too bothered about vast storage, we have an external drive for photos.
What's good, and where to buy from?
Pete ;)
I have an Acer Aspire One D150, used it since Sept. I origionally bought it just as a cheap portable PC thinking I would still use my desktop but I use it all the time. It comes with XP but I have installed Windows 7 on it and it runs even smoother. There is a version of Linux you can get for it as well but I thought it was a bit rubbish.
Take it with me everywhere. And it was only £200

I just bought one of these, as I was fed up with carting my laptop about
Windows 7 plus 250gb hard drive, I couldn't find anything with Windows 7 or a 250gb HD at this price £170 + vat
Its got all I need, built in WiFi, enough USB ports etc

Unfortunately its out of stock and probably not going to be available again at this price. I nearly bought the same one online at Maplins for £229.

I've got a samsung nc10 which i've had for over a year and love it...
Think they've updated the range since to improve them slightly but going by the reviews you can't go too far wrong with a samsung netbook.
Just make sure you get one with as good a battery as possible
Bit off topic but how long is the battery on the Samsung? I normally get about 1hr 45 to 2 hrs on mine which is a bit less than the advertised 7 hours.

Id opt for a small <= 12" laptop, netbooks are overpriced and low on power.

Not wrong.
I've had a Packard Bell with Windows 7 on for about 6 mths. Slooooooooow.
My HP laptop is about 4 yrs old now and runs a lot quicker. I had a word with an IT guy I know who has his own business.
Netbooks; the pluses are size, and size, and size. + a long batt life, about 8 hrs.
The negatives are processing power and speed - the very thing you need.
As above, get a cheap laptop
Depends on what you want to use it for. A laptop will be quicker for some tasks but all I use my netbook for is browsing the internet, and watching TV on Sky Player or BBC I-Player.
Granted it's not powerful enough for HD video but who wants HD video on a 9 inch screen?
Just bought my netbook for work from PC World/Currys.
Tis Asus something or other but was the only one with 8 hours battery life. £200 but I got it free with £20 a month broadband.

I have a Lenovo s10e which I bought in May 2009. I really rate it, my fat fingers struggle with some of the compact keyboards on netbooks but not on this one. I am particularly impressed with the build quality, it feels solid and durable, particularly the screen hinges.
It came with SUSE Linux (on CD FSR) but it's now running Windows XP and Ubuntu quite happily. I tested Win7 on it and it ran really well too.

A huge thank-you to Mrs Bluepete!
I was taken to PC world today where we all played on the I-Pad. It's very sexy in a slim, svelte all about appearance kind of way. Think of it as a supermodel - pretty to look at, good to handle, but not much under the skin.
I was then treated to a new net book, an HP Mini running Windows 7, 250gb drive and 1gb ram, all for the very reasonable £250!
So, Mrs BP, a public thank-you very much!

Sounds like a really good deal.
I've often found PC World to be quite a bit more expensive than other retailers, particularly online retailers, but with expensive items I like to pay the difference because you get the leverage of complaining in-store in front of other shoppers if it breaks down, which usually achieves the desired result.
In this case though, it sounds like you've got that benefit and a bargain price, too.

Not a big lover of pr**ks and c**ts world, especially the branches i have used.
Prices are getting better i think, there used to be a big difference to net prices and their prices but i think the gap has narrowed a fair bit.

This is what i have, in fact i'm replying from it now from in my tent on a campsite using the dongle i bought at the same time. It's perfect for taking away on trips. Enjoy

£1100 people spend that on those!? Damn.
Thread resurrection time.
My Acer Aspire One D150 netbook went for a Burton last week and as it's still under warranty the lovely people at Ebuyer have given me £200 to put towards whatever I like.
Question is, do I get another netbook? If so which one? I don't mind paying a little bit more to get a good one.
I was pretty happy with the Asus but not happy that it broke after 6 months. Every now and again i'd be wishing for more power, a bigger screen or a HDMI output but I was happy with it's small size and light weight and considering it was supposed to be 8 hours battery I was lucky to get 90 mins at first reducing to 20 just before it refused to charge at all.
So reccomend be a netbook/small laptop. Cheers.
