View Full Version : Roundabout shunt in me car.

Here is the story. Driving my own car.
First in queue at roundabout...minding me own business...
And then wallop...giving an old fashioned wallop in the rear.
What to do...damage to me seems very limited...slow speed crumple...
Women in Pug saying she wants to fix damage on the quiet but seems not to favour me...should i go for the insurance or what?
damage is unknown but a bracket which holds the bumper to the fuel tank is twisted and funny angle....u wouldnt know i have been hit but your advice would be good.

Insurance all the way. Damage might not look bad, but if you settle outside insurance and later find out that something more major has been damaged, you will be stuck with the bill and in the meantime be driving around in a potentially unsafe car.
If she's uninsured, then the police will know and she'll be dealt with, meaning one less uninsured driver on the road!

Go to a garage and get a quote then give it to her. If she doesn't pay up phone the insurance

She is insured and all so she is all good.
But your main point is the point.
That is the way I see it too.
Playing nice is not always best policy.

Bear in mind that it will affect your insurance premium the next time you take out a policy even though you are 100% not at fault!!!
I would get it looked at get a quote to repair it (somewhere expensive) then bump 50 quid on top for your troubles and do a cash deal.

Playing polite is good, always.
Playing by the book is right...and what you need to do in pretty much any accident IMO.

My worry is getting a bill at the end of the line...and then she doesnt want to know. I am nice...always...but the car is a large investment of money and i need to know its tip top as i plan to sell pretty soon.

Hence going through insurance. You always have comeback that way. It might affect your insurance, but then again...it might not. If you agree to let her pay and she decides later not to bother or to ignore you, the police will be left with a difficult job getting it sorted.

What the hell kinda car is it that the bumper is bolted to the fuel tank ! ?
Either way, if you do go outwith the insurance, i`d get it estimated and tell the other party asap, like, tomorrow, and get paid sharpish before she can change her mind, otherwise, as someone else said, if you leave it too long the police won`t be able to do much.
Mind you, if you have her details you could still tell your insurance, did you get pictures of the accident ?

I got her details.
I have spoken to a few sages and insurance is my only option.
Coz if she does a runner then I will be up a certain creek without a paddle.
And I thought life was hard enough already.

Hi
I had similar 2 years ago - slight mark in bumper or so I thought - Took to garage and dent was inside boot - £1600 damage
That was slow spped at roundabout - I wasn't moving until hit from behind.

my gf had a crash, her fault, slid on ice into a metal fence,
car valued £2800
cost of repair £2300,
insurance comapny chose repair ( dunno why)
result: 4 years ncb down to 2,
increase in insurance on next year policy same comapny £17.82 ,
so id go insurance, even if it does rise by a small amount
Same happened to me 2 years ago - slow speed max 20mph -
Externally look like a crumpled wheel arch - damage was a twisted chassis and a write off
so get the insurance to sort it all out ( i got a super courtesy car out of it!)
My premium did go up the next year but that was because of the new car.
I personally would risk it and my first question is what is she hiding doing it on the quiet
just go with the insurance. It wont affect your insurance at all........a rear end shunt is the fault of the other driver.(unless there is somthing more sinister) It may be more damaged that what the eye can see.
Your insurance premiums do not rise when you are struck by another motorist. You wouldnt be making a claim on your insurance, you would be making it on the other drivers.

insurance is the best route, however there is nothing to stop you notifying your insurance, then getting a quote from the garage, letting her know the cost and giving her the choice then,
she either pays up BEFORE the work is done, (make sure its a competent garage so all damage is assessed) or you go down the insurance route,
Dont forget, what would you prefer in this situation if the boot was on the other foot, a choice to pay up personally or not?

Only other thing is if you get quote, then taking it in bits locates more damage... then what? You have car sat in garage, she cannot pay because bill is £1k bigger... you have problem.

It's simple and I can't see there's any way around it other than insurance as per my first post. Insurance is the only guarantee that you will have your vehicle repaired 100% both now and in the future if other damage from this accident becomes apparent. To do it any other way leaves room for the other party to leave you with a bill, no matter how nice that person is to begin with.
It's a simple phone call to say that, "I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to go down the insurance route as I am worried that there's more damage than can be seen and as much as I don't want to be hit with a big bill if something else crps up in a few months, but it is also probably going to be a lot cheaper for you to do it through insurance as well".
Then say that you have already called them to inform them of the accident. If she tries to plead with you to not do it via insurance.......be polite and say you have no choice. A motorist that has nothing to hide will accept their fate and deal with it.

I agree with you mostly however, the OP isn't claiming for whiplash and maybe the person who hit him could really do with this not on their insurance and is willing to be completely helpful, it wont take long to find out if this is the case or not, and if not, insurance it is.
Its a balancing game, and its up to the OP how to play it.

Agreed, but no matter how lovely that person is now...if a problem arises in 6 months time and it's something the garage missed....is the person going to be willing to cough up then?

no.. but you would be lucky if the insurance did too! ;)
I do not know their length of liability unless there is a fault with the repair.
The reason I am on the side of "give a chance" is Catherine caught an 09 plate Freelander in a car park, he could have insisted that it went to landrover and gone though our insurance which would have been a real bitch, however he was good enough to allow me to send chips away around who repaired it all.
Granted their could be more damage but when the boots on the other foot its nice to be given a chance.
I have also been the fool to accept cash settlement before, e.g my first sv, was repaired paid for by the lady in cash but they missed the bent forks on assesment, I ended up forking out (no pun intended) to have them fixed

No pun intended, but still rather amusing.
Yep...it's a judgement call and either way, the garage might be the ones liable if they missed something initially and not sure about how long liability would last.

Don't want to but have to.
Legally this is the only way.
