Hi guys,

I'm leaving the flat fens of East Anglia and heading down your way for a long weekend at the end of June, based in Amesbury.

Was just wondering if you could recommend the roads that simply HAVE to be ridden whilst there. I don't get away often and it'd be a crying shame to miss the best roads.

Im happy to ride 300-350ish miles in a day so doesnt matter if they're not central to where we are staying.

Thanks in advance, KJ xx

If you can, take the A39 from Minehead, through Porlock and Lynton, to Barnstaple. A long way from Amesbury, but is good riding and very pretty. Try to do it at a time when there aren't going to be too many caravans, it's popular with them too! I never regret a ride up there.

Amesbury eyh...

OK well for a starter if you are heading more into the South West from there. Nip down the A345 to Salisbury, then pick up the A30 towards Yeovil. Nice bit of road. Come off at Shaftesbury and then get on the road to Tollard Royal and do a big loop of that but watch the Bends on Zig Zag Hill.

Then Back into Shaftesbury and then head for Stourpaine, Then take the road from Durweston Back to Sherborne. Then get on the A352 and head to Dorchester, passing through Cerne Abbas.

Then head for Weymouth and get on the coast road to Bridport, going through Abbotsbury and Burton Bradstock. ( B3157 )

Then take the A3066 to Beaminster and backtowards Crewkerne where you get on the A30 again. Follow that all the way to Honiton, then take the A373 to Cullhompton.

Follow the B3181 up the side of the Motorway and then get onto the A361 but only for short distance, then pick up the A396, towards Dunster then onto the A39 and then follow the route suggested above, A39 over Porlock Hill, out over Exmoor and then round back towards Barnstaple. Lovely roads and views.

Be one hell of a day in the saddle though...

+1 on all of that. I live at the bottom of the A352 and can vouch for all of those roads. A3030, watch out for mud on the road, A352 mud and gravel. B3157 is a joy, but can get a lot of gawpers going slowly and pulling out.

Do what he said, you will love it (or fry your brain!):santa:

But you might have to wait a while....

She has to work up to having them, and then she has to have a sit down and a brew because it takes it out of her

** Currently putting my jacket on and fastening my Nike's up so I can leg it..

Dn't worry about that Kellyjo, we were giving it some on Sunday because it was just us. Saturdays rideout with lots of other peeps was a much more relaxed affair. Still not slow, but nothing like Sunday :-)

I'd reccomend cheddar gorge as it is a brilliant road through there, and maybe head down to Poole one night as there are some nice roads heading down that way =)
