View Full Version : Favourite Midlands Roads
Not sure if there is something like this on here already but as I work most weekends I never get the chance to join you lot on rideouts and therefore don't know what routes you like to take.
Thought it would be a good idea to share favourite routes you like to take when you have a spare afternoon.
Anyway, here is one of mine (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Chipping+Norton,+Oxfordshire,+UK&daddr=51.906155,-1.462555+to:Charlbury,+Chipping+Norton+to:Burford+ to:Burford+Rd%2FA429+to:A417+to:A435+to:A435+to:So utham,+Cheltenham,+Gloucestershire+to:Broadway+to: B4081+to:Chipping+Campden+to:Stratford-Upon-Avon&hl=en&geocode=FQ2QGAMdNGno_ynT8BR5zSpxSDEscp-_wgCSeQ%3B%3BFROEFwMdMWPp_ymF3E8JQdJ2SDFzPoowuFiu-w%3BFcSFFgMdzAbn_ynRCmweEzBxSDHA9Fsmh6Y-3w%3BFcA7FQMdpkXi_w%3BFVBlFQMdoCji_w%3BFdm6FQMdne_ h_w%3BFUQqFgMdfMrh_w%3BFRljGAMd3d_g_yn998uiAhxxSDF tgUwaoZ0kBg%3BFU4CGgMd6K3j_ymbFc3jlNhwSDGtEKDMX1Jp fg%3BFXLSGQMdbnXk_w%3BFXw7GgMd_9zk_ynVAxZsrNBwSDFb 2rIK1hO-Uw%3BFVJhHAMdE_Tl_yk3gBj4I8VwSDF3mUHPbYgxrw&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=11&via=1,5,6,7,10&sll=51.874371,-1.560745&sspn=0.164059,0.441513&ie=UTF8&ll=52.023769,-1.513367&spn=0.654046,1.766052&z=9)
Has a nice mixture of fast A roads and windy B roads taking in some very nice Cotswold villages a stop for ice cream or a cream tea in Bibury is recomended.

I went some of that route on sunday, i like going up fish hill, im not quick but try a bit faster every time :)
I always tend to do this one too and from Nottingham, starting at Bassets Pole. due to university.
It's not a circle route, but you could always incorporate the best bits into a ride...
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Nottingham&daddr=Bunny+Hill%2FA60+to:Ashby+Rd%2FB4116+to:B411 6+to:52.590014,-1.779613&geocode=FeQHKAMdgnbu_ynNeQc50jJ4SDEV2xkZIGOAEA%3BF SRnJgMdNpXu_w%3BFdaoIwMdXDPp_w%3BFWKwIQMdGFbn_w%3B&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=4&sz=13&via=1,2,3&sll=52.583026,-1.781158&sspn=0.051109,0.105228&ie=UTF8&ll=52.581983,-1.792488&spn=0.10222,0.210457&z=12
If i'm going for a long ride, i'll tend to go a bit further afield...

the Fosse between rugby and Stratford, good flat out road (if you know it well enough)
The Fosse is a good road, looks boring on the map but has loads more bends than you think. I has the fortune to drive 25 miles of the Fosse every day to work for a few years. Some quite dodgy bits though, lots of hidden junctions and dips. Had tractors pull out on me on more than one occasion.

A444 up to M42, then to Tamworth a good road. Then Furnance end to Atherstone is a road of brilliance when its quiet.

True, roundabout at the bottom of the road for a fast departure through to do the road in reverse :P
Can see for miles on that road, shame about the amount of T-junctions and ferrets! I managed to clip one of a buggers down there, almighty mess!
Back up to Coleshill is a nice bit of road too, there is a bridge along there with a t-junction just over the otherside quite dangerous, believe somebody was killed there recently doing a ton+

Its the one just out of the village i think you mean, i know it well, there has been countless collisons there, people coming over the hill too fast while slow people pulling out to turn right from the junction.
A guy who i knew where i grew up wrote his van off at the same place about 20 odd years ago, he pulled out on a car which hit him.

Pete, I go from MSB to BW a bit too, this is the route I take though. Was the route we did when doing that advanced training thing last year. Lovely road but surface is a but rubbish in some places.

After Drayton towards Earl Shilton, then Mallory, then cut through the hamlets/villages towards the A444 is alright, Point A to B is a good bit of road too, some nice twisty bits.

Alternatively if you want a pit stop in Market Bosworth which is quite nice - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Shilton+Rd&daddr=Main+St+to:52.613576,-1.472855&hl=en&geocode=FXBWIgMdCALs_w%3BFS-pIgMdQ7Hr_w%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=1&mrsp=2&sz=13&sll=52.601484,-1.485729&sspn=0.084763,0.222988&ie=UTF8&ll=52.59919,-1.415691&spn=0.084767,0.222988&z=13

Pretty much the case where ever you go these days, Lenny. Hoping the Scottish roads are better maintained.
Bit more direct, your route, but must give it a try.:)
Don't know if its still there. Last time I did the run was 1981 on a Yamaha XS750 but how about the Stourbridge to Bridgnorth road, don't / can't remember the road number. Started at the Stewpony pub on the A449 Wolverhampton to Kidderminster Road. Took in the infamous 60's bend (was always hundreds of bikers there on a Sunday)and then always diverted us to the Cider House in Quatt !!! Fantastic fun.
