Here’s a fantastic phone conversation I’ve just had with someone from Marketing. It’s regarding attendance of our annual conference and gala. It's basically given that you will be turning up, unless you're dead or sectioned somewhere.
There’s an RSVP for the gala, which I haven’t handed in yet (deadline was yesterday- I was seeing what would happen).
Her - “I’m just calling chasing re the invitation. Are you coming”
Me- “Er- is it compulsory?”
Her- “Quite compulsory”
Me- “Quite compulsory? That’s not very definite, is it.”
Her- “Er...I...you need to speak to your manager if you can’t make it. Maria is your manager, isn’t she?”
Me- “Technically, Sarah is now” (Sarah’s off this week)
Her- “Oh, er, I’ll just speak to Victoria...” (HR manager)
Her again- “Is it the day or the evening you can’t make?”
Me – “It’s the evening- I can come to the day event, I’m just not sure if I can make the evening, I’ll get back to you in a bit”
Her- “How long until you can get back to me?”
Me- “A couple of hours”
Her- “OK, because I need to book the food and taxis this afternoon”
Bear in mind that the deadline was yesterday, but she was off!
Had me nearly crying with laughter- she really didn’t know what to say. I was just pushing it to see how far I could go. I’ll give her an hour to sweat it, then hand it in.
I’ve got the **** with the place at the moment, so wasn’t keen on going, but probably will. Free booze up innit, even though I don’t think I can stomach getting my job marketed at me right now.
