View Full Version : Windows Vista to iMac?
Taken the plunge and bought an iMac to replace my creaking Windows Vista machine. All very nice and swish save for the lack of "del" and "end" keys. Like the Borg, I will adapt :-D
Does anyone know if I can import the contents of my Windows Mail Inbox and my Contacts list into my iMac and if so, how?
TIA

if you have an iphone....
I don't. Windows Vista PC ------> iMa(n)c is the migration path
And the Del key is fn+backspace :)
Cheers - works like a charm :-D

There is an 'end' key but it doesn't work like it does on Windows. I find that I use 'end' mostly to get to the end of web address bars, pushing 'down' seems to do the same job.
CMD + Right Arrow = End of Line
CMD + Left Arrow = Beginning of Line
Took me about a week to get used to the new keys (after being a PC for 20+ years) but now I find them a lot more intuitive.

They say that they go on and on and on about making the GUI more intuitive, better to use with the mouse, less keypresses, etc etc etc.
EXCEPT anyone who uses a computer for anything practical starts wanting to become more and more efficient doing it. And clicking three menus or whatever when a keyboard combination will do it much faster is just stupid.
So yeah, before you know it, you'll be happily using new shortcuts and combinations and it'll be fine. Text based systems take longer to learn but they're more flexible and once you get going you'll probably be able to use them faster than if you were clicking no silly icons...
CMD + Right Arrow = End of Line
CMD + Left Arrow = Beginning of Line
Cheers :-D
I'm a keyboard man anyway, but I do like the "Magic Mouse" very much - truly a wonderful thing
Thanks for the help guys - still struggling with the Emails and Contacts. Down to limited export options in Windows Mail more than anything else. But I'll get there ;-)
I don't know of a direct method of importing mail from Windows Mail directly to Apple Mail BUT, it may be possible if you use Mozilla Thunderbird as an intermediary.
1. Install Thunderbird on Windows machine and import mails from Vista.
2. Install Thunderbird on Mac and transfer profile from Windows Machine.
3. Import mailboxes from Thunderbird into Apple Mail as described here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050402143519725
Although I haven't done it myself, and I am aware that involves a bit of fiddling and lost of patients, it may be a solution.
Probably best to backup the Windows Machine first ... just in case :D
take a look in the Windows Mail app and look for File, Export. I cant remember the options for export but hopefully you will be able to export to a suitable format that Mac Mail can import.
Better still, consider an internet mail account like Gmail, Hotmail etc. That way there is no need to export or move mail around, its available from any device that has an internet connection.
