Hope it's not you...
Just awaiting the over sensitive brigade..
Oh cool.
But the shreds should be the other way round - you don't put your hand into a shredder sideways, you put it in pointing downwards.

You still put your hands in pointing forwards and down, even if it's a cross-cut shredder - I call photoshop :)

I agree photoshoped
Now a few years ago my dad employed the unemployed lad from the local pub to cut his hedges for a few quid. Lad on top of stepladders swinging with petrol powered hedge cutter when he overeached and started to fall.
Yes he grabbed out at the hedge with his left hand whilst swinging cutter with his right. Bye bye 4 pinkies and the top of his thumb. Dad was gutted, he thought he was doing the lad a favour.
I had a mate who grew up an army brat, playing on a piece of kit with his mates he put his hand in the breach whilst another mate slammed it. ouch bye bye pinkies.
When I worked at Leyland we had a guy in the repair shop (internal vehicle maintenance) He was replacing the cylinder gasket on a compressor. This is like shim steel, a big hole with 4 stud holes at the sides. The holes were not big enough so he holds the steel shim with left hand and tries to put a drill though it with his right. the thin steel grabbed on the drill, turned into a razor blade and bye bye pinkies. I was the duty safety manager that day and his mates brought me a drill with the steel gasket wrapped round with his pinkies. Nice
I doubt that is a photoshop, it's a very old photo as I saw the same one in the 1st year of my degree and that was a long time ago, and I've seen worse.

If it's not photoshop, I'd love to know what shredder it was. I've never seen one that would allow fingers to get anywhere near the cutters.

Busiest department in the company?
Looks pretty real to me. Hope the person aint left handed.

Industrial shreddars... the sort that Iron Mountain and other document desposal companies use.
You wouldn't manage it with your typical £25 lidl home shreddar special.

Time to issue staff with chainmail gloves then!
The machines should be properly guarded with lock mechanisms so you can't get anywhere near them.
When we were shown the photo (if it is the same one) there was a lot more back ground information.
From what I can remember it happened way before H&S was taken seriously. The machines were not guarded and there was no isolaters etc.
A junior employee went to unblock the machine when it stopped, and it started up again, taking the hand in and not stopping until it jammed again...with bone this time.

you met anyone who didnt concequently loose thier fingers? Im stayin away from you with sharp objects.
This used to happen so often with unfenced machinery before the Factories Acts... and we still see the occasional pic of bikers with 'chain and sprocket' finger...
Most employees think that there are very few hazards in an office environment, WRONG! there are many, the normal Paper Shredder been one that we find in the majority our offices today. Please understand and be aware that this is an extremely dangerous piece of equipment that can cause serious injury to a person’s fingers if people operating it do not understand the hazards associated with it. Below is a lessons learnt accident involving a paper shredder.
Paper Shredder Accident
· Accidents can occur everywhere, even at the office;
· The picture below is of a hand that accidentally got caught inside an office paper shredder;
· The person tried to take out the paper that was stuck in the shredder and her fingers were caught and pulled inside.
Lesson Learnt (Please share this with your employees so that one of them does not have to go through the same pain and suffering).
·Be aware and be cautious when performing any job – even simple tasks like shredding paper;
·Never try to clean or dislodge paper jams whilst a shredder is still running or energized.
·Always de-energize the machine (unplug it, etc) before attempting any maintenance, cleaning or paper retrieval activities;
·Even if de-energized still ensure to keep any body parts well clear of any sharp edges or nip points;
Got that as a forwarded email last week from one of my mates!
All the background info it had.

I think common sense is being replaced by H&S and lawsuits.
I think common sense is being replaced by H&S and lawsuits.
You would think that, and thats because it is... and it's because 90% of the retards in the UK don't use common sense and will hurt themselves and start sueing people.
So employers then have to make everything paint by number so that when the retards inevitably hurt themselves, they can easily place blame on said retard so that they don't get sued.
Every piece of legislation is written in blood, or so the saying goes.
Seems like a perfect reason to get out of doing the shredding:D
I particularly get annoyed when the team leaves the shredder bin full and rather than empty it properly they just tamp it down over and over again, so that when I go to empty it the stuff explodes all across the floor.
I would have expected more blood. I cut myself a tiny bit and it bleeds all over the shop - really annoying when you're busy.

Anyone want to see the photo of the guy's balls after a fall into an incorrectly fitted safety harness? Now that WILL make your stomach turn.

My cross cut shredder at home makes it impossible to get your fingers caught unless you delibrately get around its safety features.
The slot is not wide enough to get a toddlers fingers through let alone an adults.
When you take lid off the safety button is not engaged so wont work.
If you still get your fingers mashed then you should put your head in there also cos thats the best place for your brain cells if you have any.

The ones we use at work stand about 4 feet tall or so, just have 3 touch buttons, forward, stop and reverse - the slot, as you say with yours, is on the small side though, I wouldn't want to try and deliberately get my fingers in it to find out though!

No need to go through the slot...
1) Shredder Jams up
2) Put it in reverse to clear the jam, no luck
3) Lift the shredder up and try to clear the jam from underneath
4) Jam clears, but shredder is still in reverse....
There is no step 5 due to a shortage of pinkies.

But im sure they all have a safety switch just for that reason, ie when its lifted up it wont work.

Eeeeeew! That was nasty. Gonna go puke now...
:D
I printed it off and showed it to the team - all sqeamish - lots of shrieks - and told them that it was simply a sanity check to ensure that they use the machine properly:smt044
actually Ed, that's quite a good idea - post that up by the shredder, it should encourage people to take their personal safety seriously.

I look forward to it. I hope the extra money put towards the gulf can protect it indefinitely.

Ive seen that at work, on a health and safety course. Ive also seen the falling from the harness one, that made me cringe. I also saw one where a guy had shoved his hand into a lathe , and ended up mangled on it, that also really made me cringe.

fs, I was just tucking into a Pizza with sliced salami.
not nice.
Seen something simialr to that when i used to build mobile homes, guy got his hand trapped in the metal folder, completly shredded the skin off of his four fingers. It was very graffic. I have never seen anyone so white in my life.
