Due to reasons I'm not going to go into here I'm organising a last minute stag do in Sheffield in a couple of weeks time.

Could any of you southerners ( http://209.85.48.8/html/emoticons/wink.gif ) from the City of Steel give me a quick outline to pubs/clubs/bars and the different areas: We'll be interested in starting sophisticated, and ending up pretty base by the end of the evening, with an interesting group ranging from sovereign investment managers to dairy farmers, with a good few builders, joiners, plumbers, salesmen and civil servants.

Any good stuff to do during the day apart from the usual?

And finally any hotel ideas?

Graciepants is a student, so she'll have a good idea!

I'm not from Sheffield so I don't really know many places, sorry.

The Frog and Parrot (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=frog+pub+sheffield&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=frog+pub&hnear=Sheffield&cid=2188224335119688210) used to be good, though.

It's a city with a couple of unis so there's no shortage of clubs or owt.

To be honest I go out more in other cities than sheffield
But roughly the two main 'strips' of bars and pubs you'll find are ecclesall road and west street. Both will generally be lively; ecclesall road tends to attract 10 bob millionaires so is a touch quieter and more 'sophisticated' than west st. Ecclesall road has a sports bar (champs), a few bars (menzels, varsity to name a couple) a few pubs (nursery tavern, pomona, porterbrook) there's also a casino ,napoleons, with a delightfully late serving bar further up the road i.e away from city centre). From the main bit of ecclesall road, it's probably a 10, 15 minute (****ed) strole into the city centre but there'd be plenty of buses and cabs.
West street is generally packed with w@nkers and slags- a higher density of bars and pubs along there. To name a few : bia hoi, varsity, players ,west street live, the cavendish. Running parallel with west street is division street on there is the common room, the old house, bungalows and bears and a bit further down rsvp (and a wetherspoons next door).

Club wise your main ones are Embrace (generally full of tossers and wannabe gangsters and their hoes) still good for a laugh once in a blue moon though embrace is near division street across from the town hall. There's the plug which is decent, leadmill which is a tad sticky and very dependant on what day it is, the O2 academy which is ok bit hit or miss, Corporation which is rocky the place is beyond sticky you emerge with 'corp gunge' staining your shoes and jeans and someone elses sweat all over you (in an awful way) and it's a miracle if you don't fall down the stairs - a good laugh every now and then though.
There's also a spearmint rhino on brown street this place houses the most w@nkers ;)

It'd be hard to direct you to the clubs but you might want to google them.

Go to Newcastle instead, you won't have to pay women to get 'em out.
