View Full Version : lost power - stifling when accelerating
guys hope you can help me here. i had my 2001 SV for 3,5 years and she worked without any issues even I had few small falls. this year I changed petrol tank as the old one had few dents. i put few litres of petrol in tank and went for spin; she worked very well, after covering few miles i filled tank up to top and continued. after about 5 miles she lost all power. i could ride her but revs could not go above 5000 rpm. when i open throttle the power goes down and she start to stifle. also when i leave her idling there is quite often misfiring. Yesterday I changed sparkplugs and air filter (no improvement at all), do you have any idea what could happen. thank you for your help

Could it be possible there was some crap in the new tank that's clogged up the carbs?
I'd look at cleaning out the carburettors.

Try drain them first, could be just water.

Trapped fuel line?? There may 5 miles of fuel left in the float bowls of the carbs that you used up. I know my mate got a full lap of the aintree circuit before his race bike stopped cause he forgot to reconnect the petrol tank :)

Had similar problem on my bike (1999 curvy) just after I bought it (it had been standing previously), tried everything, and turned out to be 'cack' in the bottom of the tank.
Draining the carbs solved the problem (sure someone on here suggested that!), and then I took the tank off to be sure it was all clean and wouldn't happen again.
Havent had that problem since .. .
Thank you guys for your advises, this morning I stripped the carbs down and could not believe how much filth I found. I gave it good clean, put it together and the problem disappeared. Already took her for a spin and she was perfect as before.
Thanks again!!

yea that is the problem my Fazer had, bu it was water in the carbs because of a leak in the fuel tank, got the carbs cleaned out, replaced fuel tank and took her to Spain on a 2 week journey the week after... all is well :)
