Hi Guys I'm sure most have you have seen it all before but for the benefit of people that haven't here's a bit of a guide to fitting an after market pipe, with pics!

RECIPROCATING SAW, ONE OF THESE IS VITAL, YOU WILL REALLY STRUGGLE WITH A HACK SAW AND AN ANGLE GRINDER IS A BIT DODGY BECAUSE OF THE SPARKS!
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee51/wierdfish/1006140001.jpg
MEASURE UP FROM THE WELD (seen in this pic jsut below the foot peg) THE RECOMENDED AMOUNT FOR THE 'EXTREME' WAS 65MM, BUT THIS WAS A REAL TIGHT SQUEEZE TO GET THE JOIN PIPE ON AND NOT COVER THE SCORPION BADGE WITH THE HANGER BRACKET, I WOULD RECOMEND 62MM UP FROM THE WELD AS THE EXTRA 3MM WILL JUST MAKE IT A LITTLE EASIER TO FIT TOGETHER
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee51/wierdfish/1006140003.jpg
ONCE YOU HAVE MEASURED DRAW A LINE AROUND THE PIPE TO INDICATE THE CUTTING POINT, I USED A JUBILEE CLIP TO DRAW AROUND AS IT OBVIOUSLY GIVES A PERFECT STRAIGHT LINE ONCE IT'S DONE UP A BIT. WHEN YOU HAVE THE LINE (USING A CHINOGRAPGH PENCIL OR PERMANENT MARKER), YOU CAN THEN REMOVE THE JUBILEE CLIP AND PUT A BIT OF TAPE AROUND TO MAKE THE CUTTING LINE CLEARER.
NOTICE THE HONEYCOMB MASS THIS IS THE CAT AND CAN APPARENTLY BE REMOVED WITH NO HARM TO THE BIKE, I LEFT MINE IN AS IT DOESN'T HURT TO DO THIS EITHER! (IF IT AINT BROKE....).
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee51/wierdfish/1006140007.jpg
LOOSELY ASSEMBLE THE PIPE AND OFFER IT UP TO THE BIKE TO ALLOW YOU TO WIGGLE THE BITS AROUND AND GET THE RIGHT MOUNTING POSITION.
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee51/wierdfish/1006140017.jpg
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee51/wierdfish/1006140011.jpg
BEFORE TAKING THE NEW PIPE OFF MAKE A MARK OR TWO ON EACH END OF THE CONNECTOR SECTION THAT MARRIES UP WITH BOTH THE SILENCER AND THE MID SECTION BY THE LAMBDA SENSOR, THIS ENSURES THAT WHEN YOU FINALLY TIGHTEN STUFF UP YOU WILL STILL HAVE IT ALL IN THE RIGHT POSITION.
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee51/wierdfish/1006140014.jpg
REMOVE THE SILENCER AND CONNECTOR PIPE, THEN USE A SMALL AMOUNT (A BEAD OR LINE) OF BATHROOM SEALENT (CLEAR IS BEST) AROUND THE INSIDE OF EACH END OF THE CONNECTOR PIPE TO PREVENT ANY LEAK OF GAS, SORRY NO PICS OF THIS BIT!

NOW PUT THE WHOLE LOT BACK ON THE BIKE AND TIGHTEN UP THE JUBILEE CLIPS ON THE CONNECTOR AND THE HANGING BRACKET ON THE SILENCER., NOTE: THINK ABOUT POSITIONING THE JUBILEE CLIPS WITH THE NUT POINTING UP TO KEEP IT CLEAR OF ROAD CRUD ETC.

THE FINISHED ARTICLE, WHOLE THING CAN BE FITTED IN UNDER AN HOUR, TOOLS NEEDED WERE THE SAW, A SOCKET SET AND SPANNER SET.

the honeycomb part is a cat (which you should smash out as far as i'm concerned) and you should have removed the lambda sensor before cutting. i mucked my sensor up by not taking it off, luckily i got another threw warranty.

but i do like the can, i had one exactly the same as they sound the dogs licky bits. ooohhh get that fekin baffle out they are put in with silicon sealant BTW and take a fair old twisting to get out.

Thanks for that didn't know that was the cat, why take it out will it make much difference?
Lambda sensor seems ok still tho.

ermmmm yes. better flow of gases and a better note to the exhaust.

when i done my can i noticed considerable improvement.

might have to have it apart again then!
Incidently the baffle was out the same day and was only held in by one bolt and no sealent, came out very easily you can see the bolt if you look closely at the inner part on the second pic. I actually don't think I would want the pipe much louder as it is pretty mental as it is!

i ended up putting my baffle back in as the noise was getting a bit out of hand especially after 300+ miles.

but for short blasts on the nearby lanes it was lovely to have it out.

im fitting my new exhaust on sunday so you think its better to take out the cat and the lambda sensor? the instuctions that came with it never mentioned ethier.

will removing the sensor scew with the bike?

barwel1992

you have to leave the lambda sensor in or the bike fuelling will go all over the shop, they wont tell you to remove the cat because its not supposed to be removed as it was fitted because of EU legislation after 2006 (k7+ bikes).

my bike does not have a cat because its older, also ripping the cat out will lose you some weight ;)

cool, so mine might not have a cat as its a k5.

yours wont have a cat is K7+ that have the cat and lambda sensor

Taking out the cat isn't a neccessity then? Besides what happens if you want to return the bike to normal and the next owner wants the cat in? I reckon if it doesn't hurt then leave it alone, I also think that any mods you do should be reversable. You'd be suprised what a difference to the re-sale value it can be make to have a standard bike, lots of people would rather buy a bike as standard and then carry out there own mods and dealers will give you more for a standard bike on a part ex. Only my opinion of course but not without some grounding.

theyd never know it was there unless you told them, its not the sort of thing people go looking for/or want for that matter

but its up to you

Loosely related question.

Is there anywhere you can go to check the sound of X can? Looks is easy to pick, but if I really want to pick a can based on sound, what does one do? Are there such places where one can go to hear, first hand?

Youtube is all good but prolly doesnt do any can the justice.

Surely the lambda sensor is configured to work with the cat in, so taking the cat out might cause some issues?

barwel1992

the lambda sensor adjusts the air and fuel mixture dependant on exhaust gasses (i think no 100%) and the sensor is before the cat so i dont see what effect it could have

No where to go as far as I know to hear them, but in the end I went on looks because they are all much of a muchness in the sound department because the people that make them know that we want a pipe that sounds good, some smaller manufacturers have their own workshops that you may be able to visit and you can hear them on line on their web sites, e.g. Beowulf I think. I chose mine for looks and because lots of people on here said the street extreme sounded good on an SV and they weren't wrong! I too am considering putting the baffle back in, cos the noise is beginning to grate, lol!

no issues. it does not need a cat.

correct'ish. i dont think the SV has 'on the fly' adjustment like some of the more modern cars. i think its predetermined by the CDI at a given state.

you can remove the lambda by inserting a 'dummy' but its better to leave it in as you gain more fuel economy. if you dont put a dummy load in then you will get an FI fault light (think the code is C41 if i remember)

also i suggested removing the lambda for cutting the old can off or hacking the cat out as it can damage the probe as they are relitivly fragile things (and very expensive around £200). once done you can install the probe again.

How do I go about removing the cat? Is it simply a matter of pulling it out with some needle nose pliers?

The only kind of person who'd want the cat fitted is the same kind of person who'd knit their own underpants out of muesli by candlelight. It wouldn't cross the mind of any straight thinking normal individual and there are hundreds of buyers out there who wouldn't be bothered by it, so don't pander to the tree-hugging, whale-saving, soap-dodging lefty liberals any more than you have to.

And for those that do not have a fancy cutting tool it only takes about 5 minutes with a hacksaw/good blade and your bigger most frequently used arm
;)

Looks sweet i might add :thumleft:

Think I get your point of view but still can't see the need to remove it? Does it make that much difference? :D

My seat? S'far as I know it's a standard one off the grey model I presume? Couldn't stand the red one so got the black one from e-bay. It looks much better!

Resurrecting this thread, as I just bought a street extreme 2nd hand and was planning to fit it this weekend, but I think the seller forgot to include the clamp when posting it, that he said was included so may have to postpone fitting.

Anyway my question was about the clamps. I have the end can and the link pipe, obviously there should be a clamp that fits around the link pipe and tightens down to join the link pipe to the original header. Is that correct?

And then, my questions are, what joins the end can to the link pipe? And what is the 'spring clamp' for (the ~3cm spring type thing)?

Thanks!

Nice - what size is the housing unit that holds the can to the footpeg? Thanks ;)
