View Full Version : Tyre spinning on the rim

Ok, spinning maybe and exaggerated term, but I can't think of a better word.
What are the implications of a tyre that has spun on the rim? Is it just likely to be out of balance or anything else?
Also - what causes it? Just sticky tyres or does how it was fitted have any influence?
Cheers

How do you know it has spun?

Balance may have changed, if it is rear it probably will not do anything.
How do you know it has moved, and how far?
I hear it can be caused by using something too slippery on fitting tyre that does not dry up properly.

On DOT race tyres (maybe all tyres?) you get 2 coloured dots which the tyre fitter should line up with the tyre valve. I'm pretty sure they were when I had them fitted.
Front has shifted ~1-2 inches, but the rear around 6-8 inches! I only noticed when doing some work to my bike, not from riding it.
What you using to get the tyre on the rim Luke? I use soapy water (with a little bit of washing up liquid) and I've had no problem as it goes sticky when it dries. Sounds like whatever has been used on yours is allowing the tyre to move.
... or are you running your tyres at 10psi? :)

as long as theres no wobble dont worry, it doesnt really matter on the rear but you would notice it on the front as it would throw them out of balance. are you sure they just wernt fitted properly?

I thought the dot was for light spot, I have a wheel around here somewhere where valve does not end up as heaviest spot with no tyre. Maybe you have same thing going on.

You wouldn't worry if the tyre was rotating on the rim? If it is, it is not the sort of thing that will miraculously heal itself.
Get a pen and mark from the rim to the tyre and you'll be able to check if it is or not.

No idea! I didn't fit them, though they are definitely not under inflated!

Could be - I automatically assume that the valve is the the heaviest part of the wheel, but since the shop in town fitted the tyres, they might have balanced them up correctly rather than just lining up the valve with the lightest point on the tyre.
I'll see whether they move further at the next meeting, but even if they do, I'll be swapping them out after anyways due to wear
