View Full Version : Audi A3 or BMW 118
The choices are:
Audi A3 Sportsback 2.0TDI Sport
or
BMW 118D Sport
These are the only choices so don't go off on one with loads of other suggestions.

Audi all the way much more fun car !
Beemer. I refer you to Clarkson's comment on the people that used to put him off BMW's are now driving Audi's.

Driven both. Was left feeling very underwhelmed by the BMW felt dull to drive and not a very nice place to sit. Audi was much more lively and IMHO a nicer place to sit in. which engine in the A3 140 or 170bhp ?

Only 140....saying that....I may have a look at the 170! Which one did you drive Fizz?

Are you kidding! have you actually driven either. The A3 is a horrible hateful thing, dull and incredibly boring. The 170 may have a bit of grunt but you will also be lucky to see much over 50mpg driving like a gran, it an old engine now.
The 1 series is an awsome handling little car, and proper wheel drive. Good economy and cheap tax too.

I have driven both but only short trips IMO the audi felt the more enjoyable ride.
cant comment on mpg or cheap tax as neither was my car or my worry.

+1 I find the Audi's really dull inside, i almost bought the beemer, with leather pushed it over £20k though and i didnt wanna spend no more than £18k.
Beemers a bit car imo and thats coming from a long time VAG customer.

I had the A3 1.9 TDi for a year and I now have the 118D MSport. In no particular order...
I would take the BMW over the Audi IF space is not an issue for you.
The 1er drives superbly, very well balanced, very good quality interior, corners like a pro and is generally a better place to me imo. Fuel wise, its the best of both worlds. Discipline the right foot and you can get 55+mpg (driving like an old granny) but put your foot down to redline and it'll drink some, but the performace is worth it :D On a day to day I average 45ishmpg. Cruise on Mway about 90-99, do equal town/mway.
At 120p/l Its just under 60quid from dry to full tank, and I'll get 500 miles from it.
Rear Wheel drive is so much fun :D
The one downside is space. The 1er has none! If space is anywhere in your priority list, forget it.
Of course with the MSport you get stiffer suspension so that may bias my judgement on handling a bit, as I have no idea how the standard suspension feels.
My views on the interior of each may be kind of out, as I'm comparing the basic A3 to the flagship 1 series.
Dont go for the 116, its rubbishly underpowered, flipside if you can stretch to the 120, do it.
BMW Standard alloys are a PITA the clean properly.

Scoobs - was the 140, mate has the 170 and he gave me a lift in that, noticebly more torque and power.
I've drove the 170 version Audi, and have to say I was impressed. I've had that for a long weekend and had a BMW 118d for a week.
Both are great little cars, but expensive for what they are (however paying for the brand). If driven un-ecomical they will both pull quick and will responde when you want them to.
If I'm honest I wasn't really expecting the power delivery in the Audi that I received when I drove it.
I would have the Audi as I think it is under estimated compaired to the BMW.
You after new or used? As we have an Audi A3 Sportback S Line 170 that I'm about to arrange for the leasing company to collect as the member of staff who was going to purchase it finance fell though. PM me if you want any details.
Cheers for answers. Sounds a bit 50:50 tbh. They are quite similar in the areas that matter to me. I'm not after anything blistering. That's what the bike is for innit.
I need something reasonably economical, well built, not French. If you look at the specs, there is not much in it. The only real difference is front or rear wheel drive.
Oh and Lily, it's going to be new - lease hire company car. Thanks for the offer though.

Spot on there

If we have more winters like the one we just have, don't get the BMW. ;)
The BMW dealership we use, refused test drives to everybody during the snowy times, as they knew they would not sell any vehicles. Even in a light frost we where fighting with the BMW's when moving them around the work car park. The only one that the back end didn't move on was the 730.

Golf GTD
I thought that to. They do the Golf with the same 170bhp 2litre diesel that the Audi A3 comes with...
oh and your poll is rubbish as there is no Keithd option...

Sorry? Who?
Golf GTD is sexual

More so than the equivalent A3, I always though the Golf was a little cheaper in that respect.
Neither - they are both usually driven by cnuts ;)

Few other things I thought of...
BMW Start/Stop is pretty good, imo. Very handy, not sure how much fuel it saves much better than nowt.
Depending on your lease hire mileage, the bmw may end up cheaper if you choose to go with no maintenance. Beemer has a long service interval, so if lowish mileage/contract length, I'd say go non-maint and save some cash.
BMW tyres are ruddy expensive. Runflats are circa £130+ per corner.
Of which I think I just punctured one on the way home (Puncture symbol). FFS.

Audi comes with start/stop as well.

I'm not sure how to take that...so I'll take it as a compliment. :)

which version of the 118d mate?
It's all going to be a surprise as to what I get. I spec'ed both and send both specs to the fleet manager. I told her to order one, but don't tell me which one. It will all be a big surprise when it gets delivered. :)

niiice I like that idea,
we don't have a fleet manager, I have had to source both cars I have hadand arrange everything, its not that bad but it can be a real headache,
what spec's did ya pick?

(above) A 1 series, yesterday.
what spec's did ya pick?
To be honest it comes with most of the stuff I need. Added cruise control, parking sensors, auto lights / wipers if it wasn't standard spec. The only other thing I specified was leather for it's wipe cleanability.
Well the decision has been made for me. If I order now, I can take delivery of the Audi in February 2011...? What?
Bimmer it is then.

lol?
My leasing contact said they are practically giving Audi's away right now because of excess stock.
Funny world.
Enjoy the BMW.
Oh, just one word of caution, depending on whether you got your with tyres/maint - I got a screw in my n/s front tyre couple days ago, and everywhere I go refuses to repair it becuase its on runflats.
£172 down the pooper.
Thinking of geting tyre insurance now :(
Tyres are all in mate. I pay for nothing but personal fuel. I don't even have to pay for screenwash.

snap, the company purchased my BMW, it was 6 months old with 3 k on the clock for a third less than new, but he also bought the Service inclusive pack.. if it broke ... they fix it! :-) if it low.. the fill it (cept fuel)
Good choice might I add...
I think the build time maybe because you had extra's... stock cars dont take long but factory builds do!

1 series is more fun on track, quite a few run diesel 1s at the 'Ring. It would be my choice.

Sounds about right, we ordered one last month, looking at November/ Decemer delivery. One that we ordered in Jan we are hopefully getting that next month. But only on the A3..... we can get any other audi within a couple of months at the longest
