Blood Bikes

Just trying to guage if anyone has had any dealings with the various blood bikes/bloodrunner charities.
if so can you let me know - the idea has come up in converstaion again and I think its being taken seriously this time.

well thats the whole point - we want to bring them to scotland but want to know the pitfalls and stuff before talking to trust and SAS and NBTS

I rode for SERV for two years or so. As I hate needles I could not bring myself to give blood so I decided to move it about instead!

Based at the time in New Malden, Surrey, my other half and I gave up every other Saturday night waiting for the phone to ring in an airless room behind a sports centre. Sleep was not easy as you could not relax properly, even on nights when we had no calls. The "shift" was 7pm to 7am and was covered 365 days a year.

Most of the runs we did involved picking up samples from the regional hospitals, going to the central pathology lab and were not urgent. It could be anything though and that was part of the buzz. Although we were never called to do it the log had several organ transplant runs noted in it, and the group folklore had the police helping out if the traffic was heavy for those ones. The most important runs we ever did involved pick ups from the blood bank in Tooting which meant an emergency operation was required somewhere. Quite sobering when it's early November, about 11 o'clock at night, and the doctor is waiting for you in the packed A&E waiting room...

Funnily enough emailed them this morning but to try and contact the Oxon group as I'm down there in a fortnight and see if I could meet up with someone. Its a pain with them being so far south:(

Q - most of the big hospitals here, NRIE and St Johns and the Glasgow hospitals all have NBTS storage on site and labs for testing samples etc, so I'm not sure the demand for a bike runner service would be that high.

Even organ transportation isn't that frequent up here.

I hope you get somewhere with it though I know the rare occassion when you could do with urgent blood in the community (ie a PPH at a home birth or similar).

think we're steering away from blood and SCotblood are unco-operative to say the least - though i'm sure we can stop FV spending £200 per day on a taxi to wait around for the possibilty that something/someone may need transporting.

@Guru - we've managed to find a guy that has already started something simil;ar and trying to get it off the ground at the mo. He's made inroads with the NHS and seems supportive so far but everything is dragging along as always

We're also looking at the human milk aspect which is often forgotten about. Very important in the care of premature kids.
