After the GM, we planned a trip around the coast of northern Scotland. Raving Davis and Dave 20046 joined us.
We should have taken the Corran Ferry, but due to the captain taken exception to where we joined the queue, we went to Mallaig via Fort William. Stopped at the Glenfinnan monument, where the two Daves ventured up top.

Why has Dave made a lifesize model of Lissa out of his gear on the back of his bike?
IF he wanted her on the back all he needed to do was ask her to sit there!!

where did you get that dayglo rain suit numbers??
I still want to know why the captain got in a mood.. if you rode down the car queue and got to front its not a prob is it as bikes go in seperate area.. or was it just a roll on and stay with your vehicle 10 vehicle ferry??

NO idea what the Captains problem was, he just has a little bit of power to is going to fully extend it. I'm not sure it helped that Pete gave him the special cupped hand wave :smt040

Some fantastic pics by the boys. Especially considering they were taken by phone cameras.
We had mainly 200 mile days after leaving the GM,which I originally thought might be quite difficult considering the road type that we would be on, but the roads were virtually empty and the single track ones usually had good vision, so a quickish pace could be set. One of the boys led, with the lumbering Duke taking up the rear. Raving did have a moment early in the trip with a car coming around the corner and forcing him to use the gravel option. He kept it upright. Thank god.
After Torridon we headed up to Tongue

The Saturday ride wasn't that bad G. You soon end up riding with someone of a similar pace, or up the front, where the pace was quick enough IMO.
Because it was our holiday, we sort of dictated the route for the rest of the week together with daily leave times and, it worked quite well although I think the boys would have preferred a bit longer in bed.

Make a note for next years calendar. Maybe a few more will stay on and do a similar trip. It's well worth the effort.

So after the boys had finished beautifying their bikes we headed off for grub. The only drawback to the YH is that they don't generally provide cooked meals. There is a large and well equiped kitchen but that's obviously no good without ingredients. So we opted for the easy option.
Stopped down by the Causeway to take some pics first though.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/petevtwin650/orgphoto/gmIII/gm3233.jpg
Next day we set off for John O'Groats. The weather had taken a turn for the worse and was really windy. Still managed a reasonable pace and got to JO'G ready for a late brekkie. Duly consumed, we got pics, but being tight refused to pay to have the more usual 'under the sign' pic. So here's the cafe instead
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/petevtwin650/orgphoto/gmIII/gm3245.jpg
We next headed down to Wick, where RD had a tyre on order. Leaving him to get it sorted, Numbers and ourselves headed south towards our Loch Ness YH. This was going down the A99. The most dangerous road in GB. Well it was, but because the weather completely closed in and with dense fog and heavy rain, made riding it a most tense time. Still, we survived unscathed and soon found the nice weather again.

I can, because I was left behind to sort my new tyre out I did the road about 2 hours later in the the dry as the sun had sorted itself out and began to shine. I had a very nicely scrubbed in rear tyre by the time I had done the 108 miles to Inverness! The road was a lot of fun! (As were most of the roads in Scotland actually!)

You have to pay for a pic of a public sign???
You dont in lands end, or you didnt, but you have to pay into the parky thingy IIRC.

In Lands End you have to pay to get in the car park in the summer months. I'm pretty sure they charge bikes too.
It's a bit crap lands end though, I always tell people to visit lands end if they must but drop into Sennon Cove about 1 mile before Lands End to be treated to a proper view and a lovely place to spend the night. There is a pub called the Old Success. Spend an evening there and you will find scores of people who have just complete John O Groats to Lands End. Some fantastic stories to be heard.

Obviously you can take a pic of the sign, but to have yourself and bike by it, does cost. That's the same at Lands End too.

Depends if you don't mind packing up each day and riding the bike fully loaded I guess Quiff. Or make it longer of course. Lissa planned a brilliant circular route. Certainly worked for us.
So, all re-united we headed into Fort Augustus for fish n'chips. Inspired by meeting the Quiffs there last year.

The boys bought some bottled beer, then realised that they couldn't carry it. The only time that Numbers top box would have been useful and it was back at the YH. They asked Lissa and seeing as how they'd bought here Fudge and Shortbread for here birthday, she couldn't refuse. Meant a slower pace back but was enjoyable all the same.
This was going to be our last night as a group so we wandered down to the Loch's edge and chilled out. Making a fire to ward away the midges. Well it was a good excuse and a good fire.

Stayed at Applecross last year with ararko & later LP & had a cracking time. Durness, Tongue etc were a good day's ride with the benefit of Beault na Ba twice ( or more ) each day.
So much of the roads and scenery are so very good that it's a bonus to do the big miles to get anywhere of interest ( that excludes JoG )
BTW aren't you supposed to sit in the middle of the woodsmoke to keep Ms McMidge at bay?
SO pleased you had such a good'un
Brilliant...loving the piccies...and the fact all that is just on the doorstep, sort of. I can feel a plan in the making...not sure about the 'comedy rear luggage arrangement' though!:D

Noted how Pete called us 'the boys' through out the thread - did he do this in scotland? May have attributed to the dysfunctional biker family look.
And stingo the píza luggage solution was down to me hating packing and having left it late thought I'd just sling everything into the biggest bag I could find and haphazardly strap it down. Used gaffa tape last year - was a little sturdier!

A few years back I did that road at least once a year (in the car) to go and see my Mum who lived in Wick.
The road is a lot straighter now they put up bridges to by-pass the VERY twisty bits

Most places we went people thought we were a family group, and one pretty blonde scottish lass thought we were cool parents for bringing our kids along:smt046
That was when people weren't thinking that the two Daves were a couple! :smt008 :smt044:smt044

Problem was that everything was balanced on a topbox that was no bigger than a lunchbox (Linford Christie's excepted:) ). Had he had a decent sized one then it would not have been so precarious. Although to be fair, he never lost anything except a bar and a half of cadburys chocolate and very nearly his dayglo romper suit.
