I can concur with the honourable Quiff. If you are enjoying your time on the org, then this is the best way to meet up with all the people you banter with, get a picture of what they are like in real life and to have fun.

He's rite you know, cum along, you'll love it, and if riding in big groops doesn't appeel to you then don't do the ride, there will be plenty of people their at the campsite during the rideout.

To add to what the Quiffster said, if you're a young female worried about all these dirty old men being around you...I'll look after you ;)

On a serious note...2007, a very well known man on this site offered to fit me a Scottoiler to my bike the weekend of the AR, more of a convincing to go...I'd never met anyone on this site and I was driving 100-150 miles up the M1 & M6 on my own to meet up with a bunch of bikers...I didn't know what to expect. The guy pushed me so much to come and told me I wouldn't regret going, he never turned up to the AR because of electrical problems and I never got my Scottoiler fitted, but, I had the best weekend of my life ever, covering the most miles I had ever on my bike (500+), learnt so much from various people, and it started many friendships with many people that still go strong today, I now have friends all over the country and I am very grateful to that one person for persuading me to go that year. That is the main reason why this years is very special to me.

Can you guess the person who convinced me was?

I have to admit that's why I aren't coming. I am in the minority coming from York, and have never been to one of the meetings before. I would really like to, but always have the nagging doubt about not knowing anyone. Unfortunatley I have left this too late now, and I am away with work, but I think I will defo make it my priority to attend the next one. I have been a member of the site long enough to get my **** in gear.

In fact, I think it is safe to say that while most people on this forum became friends through the forum and we all have our own lives outside of it, other groups of friends etc....we all really look forward to the AR each year.

It's just the best kind of weekend you can imagine and the two that I have been to so far have been absolutely fantastic.

If you look at how early after last years AR peoples thoughts turned to this years, you'll get an idea of how much we all look forward to them. We just enjoy them so much, we can't wait to look forward to the next one.

Almost all regional sections do their own little weekends away at some point during the year. Doesn't matter id you are from that area or not as you'll be wlecome at any of them. Us surfers from the south west are having one end of august if you fancy that, just go to the south west sufers section.

Each year there is usually a North Wales rideout which gets decent numbers. The GM is the annual Scottish rideout which also gets great numbers. Keep your eye open and join in. Put up a thread in your local section and see what comes from it. You could organise a weekend camping or just a days rideout :-)

WHAT??? You realised then that sometimes the best things are on your doorstep :-)

I love scotland and I hope Dan and I can do the GM next year and maybe tie it in with a holiday. It's a beautiful place. Then obviously, being from Wales, I love the scenery there, especially the coast.

you should come to one at least .. I know you working this year..

I think new folk see the same names on here and the banter etc and think they will be left out.. but its not like that ..

I have made some ace friends on here.. (yea even the southerners)

Some folk I only see once a year but its like they are always around as they are on here.

some you meet and their personality is nothing like on here.. me for example.. I am nice . not the a$$hole I come across as on here.. ..

Many many folk ahve made good good friends on here.. take us.. we are going to France in september on the bikes with Matt Sv and Anita and we didnt know them at all B4 the org .. now we are good friends.. good job he lives 300 miles away though .. but see .. 300 miles and we both make the effort to meet up every few months at least ..

we all have a common interest .. alcohol.. ! no bikes.. - beyond that - yea there are some that you wouldnt pick as mates neccessarily (sp) in your day to day world but that is life.. everyone comes to the Ar to meet friends, feel the love and camaradre (sp) and have a good ride and a laugh on the sat night..

so beg steal or borrow a tent and put yer name down..

I am lucky in that living very central I can make a lot of the rides . AR , GM. Wales etc .. I realise its difficult for the more remote /isolated members. .. mind you look at dear Hovis he attended everything ! and he lived south wales.. so - it can be done.. so do it !

Footnote.. and dont worry if you have not ridden in a big group before.. no one is watching your riding.. you go at your own pace. the ride is not a race it is a steady ,lovely scenic ride and makes you feel alive as hell with all the bikes that YOU are a part of.. .. and the organisation and the briefings and the high viz riders etc make you feel safe as houses.. just be yourself and ride for yourself and .. oohhh its a brill weekend ....bring it on

190 miles to ride, one way, and I would have only ridden for a couple weeks, not sure if I can even hack that kind of distance on a bike yet! Confidence a bit shaky after the off.

And I'm all alone :(

I'm sure you are all nice enough, but I dont even have any camping kit (skint as a dog after repairing my off) and cant really afford hotel (hmmm...business credit card maybe...)

If not, then I just need to sort some accomodation. On a serious note, I'll have to sort some kind of tent out. I'm not a snob or anything, just like my own space ;)

Provisional YES from me. Only things stopping me is any unavoidable work duties (I will obviously try as hard as possible to not let anything into those days)

I also need to get my SV looked at to make sure everything is in order for that kind of mileage, no cash to fit new/spares. Mainly my tyres and chain I'm a bit worried about.

if anyone is worried that their riding isn't "up to scratch" I would just say not to worry. As has been said before, your riding isn't up to scrutiny (unless you ride like a **** and cause an accident). When all is said and done the only person you MUST stay in front of is me.

But only 'cos I'm the T.E.C.

Get used to the sight of the rear of my XT600 ;)

I have it geared for off road, so top cruising speed is about 70mph. On straighter faster sections, I'm pretty sure I'll end up at or near the back.

With so many bikes I can't imagine it's going to be a fast rideout, so I'm bringing the sit up and beg, see over the hedges machine, with the comfortable seat.

This will easily be the most amount of miles I hhave done in a short space of time in both car or bike, and having been riding only a couple weeks (less depending on when I get my bike back on the road), I am hoping to learn a lot about my riding/bike!

+1 again as can't stress this enough. Everyone should ride at their OWN pace, no need to play catch up or try and stay with the person in front of you. Ride for yourself and use your mirrors so that you are always aware of markers or faster riders passing you. It's a ride for everyone, so the aim is that you all enjoy it. If that means you are at the back all the way (in front of our wonderful T.E.C. of course) riding slower than everyone else, no-one will care. We just want to see smiles on faces at all the stops, that's what's important :-)

Well, you've had your off now, so you've got that out of the way....you can just relax a bit and try and enjoy the ride, both on the Saturday and the journey there and home. I would imagine that just the ride up on the Friday with people like Messie and the Soho lot will see you gel with the bike more than you have yet, just due to being on it for a really long run, so you'll feel better about it before the rideout leaves and yes...you'll learn lots. I'm still new, 3000 miles and learn so many new things on each ride, but I did the reccie yesterday and so long as you keep your eyes open and stay focused, there's nothing that will scare you :-)

They are all good roads with fantastic tarmac and I can guarantee that you'll love them.

Nah, I know it will be fun :D

Going to try and get someone in the know to look over my bike though when Im back up and running on it to double check everything is sound for all those miles, esp after the crash.

Yep, it's going to be a good pi$$ up weekend, but it's not for Hovis.

It was Hovis' AR, his event, we organised it together with a few helpers but it wouldn't be happening if not for him. He never planned it as his weekend, so it still won't be. It's going to be just as he wanted it.

I know you weren't getting at anything :-)

I just want it to be clear, especially to newbies to the forum that the AR is not going to be a weekend dedicated to one of our fallen friends. We have lost a few members of the forum in recent years and it's always noce to do something, but it's best to let people do that and pay respects in their own ways.

The AR will just be a bl00dy good weekend of riding, drinking, chatting, laughing and...did I mention drinking....lol. Just as Hovis would have wanted it!

Yes, I think we had a cunning plan for this - we'd wear our lids so that no one would know who we are.

As others have said - the Org are a really friendly bunch and will make everyone feel welcome. Do it!

No worries peeps.
I appologise if you were influenced at all by my previous post.
The whole American, torches and pitchforks thing was made in jest.

I have never met another .org'er in person. No not even one, but am coming 5000+ miles from the US to the AR.
Honestly, I've lost count of how many people here have offered me a place for the night, to take me for a ride, or to show me around their part of the UK. Everyone here is just the greatest.

Just come. You'll have the time of your life.
Everyone really is nice.

Bill arrives at Manchester Airport on Tuesday 3 August at 8.30am (assuming flight on time). I reckon he'll be through immigration, baggage and customs by 9.30. I'm meeting him in the car and driving him to the bike hire shop, about 30 mins drive through south M/CR traffic I guess. Then we're headed back to my place so's I can change for the bike and get Bill's stuff bungeed onto his hire bike, then we're off. So I would guess that we'll be leaving my place (Baschurch now) at about 12 - 12.30.

It's not a bad ride down anyway to be honest. We picked the Kwak up from Manchester and the trip was fine. Took us five and a half hours going the scenic route and lots of stops...but motorway and major roads and you can do it in three hours. :-)

I'm considering joining you on the ride out. I'm quite local so I wouldn't be camping but would there be somewhere I can meet you on route. Or are stops decided on the day?

Also I've never riden in a group before, any tips?

Yes

Leave a decent gap between you and the bike in front of you
If somebody is hassling you to overtake you let them
Dont feel pressured to riding faster than you want to or feel comfortable doing
Keep an eye on your mirrors and make sure you are fully aware of whats going on around you.
Enjoy your day out.

As for route details speak to _stretchie_ as he is dealing with that side of things and will be able to suggest a good point to meet us. But by not camping you really are missing out on the social side of things, which for many now is more important than the ride itself, so my advice would be to join us on the site even only for Saturday night

+1 on all that. As a new rider, I have found that it's really really important to keep an eye on your mirrors. You can get surprised by a faster rider passing if you've seen them coming.

The only thing I would add to what Fizz has said is that if you don't do it already, ride in a staggered fashion so that you are never directlu behind the bike in front, that way you are less likely to be caught out by the rider in front engine breaking or breaking harder than you expect.

If you make yourself known to Stretchie when you can, he'll cover anything you want him to then as well and yes....for most people, it is now about the social, so if you can stop for all or a bit of the Saturday night....you'll get to see just what a wonderful place the org really is :-)

Thanks both. I'll keep those tips in mind. And I'll pm stretchie about meeting up.

If I did decide to stay for a night, isn't it too late to put my name down? And it's £12 per tent or per person?
