ignition noise - noob question

What is the noise that is made when you turn the sv ignition on? IT's like a electrical whirring for a second? I think it's possibly fuel pump maybe?
Anyway sometimes it only makes the noise for a split second and the engine won't start so I have to turn off wait a few seconds and switch back on. Then it makes the noise for a full second and the engine starts?
Is this normal or Is it the sign of something going faulty?

I'll presume the bike is a post k2, so fuel injected (pointy) so I'd guess you mean the fuel injection system priming, if this doesn't happen then no fuel will be delivered to run the bike.

No sure it's a known issue, as I've not come across the problem on an SV before, but could be a sign of a dodge wiring connection, worth a check anyway.

My 600 used to do the same. Turn off, reboot, turn back on. The most I'd do is a squirt of WD4O in the ignition barrel.

Oh I don't disbelieve you, I was just unaware it was a common fault on the pointy SV's. as it hadn't happened on any I've worked on, actually I've not had it happen on any of the FI bikes unless there was a problem that needed sorting, but then I don't live with an FI SV.

Cringer, next time it happens, don't turn the ignition off, turn the kill switch off and then back on, leaving the ignition alone. See if you get the same stall in the priming. That should isolate whther its ignition switch, software or circuitry.

Tell us what happens.

could you also update and give us the model and age, and how often it does it, it's not often I come across problems not already experienced on the SV.

It's a 53 naked. And it happens maybe once in 6 attempts but obviously not that consistent.

I've asked about and that isn't normal or common, which would indicate an intermittent fault of some kind, rather than a common issue as was suggested.

Perhaps a good check of the relevant components and wiring would be prudent as this could be a warning of a complete failure at some point.

Is FI chec light on when it fails to start?

I'll use my extensive knowledge of mechanic's and spray some wd40 on it and give it a good kick.

Cringer, the whole Idea of posting asking for advise is that you don't have to take it to the garage. You use OUR mechasnical knowledge to fix it.

And we ask the same questions as the garage but don't charge £40 an hour for it. :)

Fixing something is a process of elimintation, especially with an intermittant fault.

Your side of the deal for this free info is to find out what's asked :)

So, as it happens about one go in 6 and its linked to the ignition, my guess is its a slightly corroded or loose connection in the switch to that circuit.

Here's what to do:

1) Go and squirt some WD40 inside the ignition switch and see if it still happens (turn the ignition off and on until it yeilds the fault).

If it doesn't it was the ignition switch (the same as my 600)

2) If the fault still happens, leave the ignition on but turn the kill switch off and on and see if you can get it to repeat.

If you can and the fault is still there, spray the kill switch with WD40.

3) When the fault happens check the dashboard to see if there's an FI warning. If there is, we can find out which item is faulty and lead you straight to it.

Taking a bike into a garage with an intermittent faul is like Manner from heaven for them :) They can charge you pretty much what they like and be justified. The local vauxhaul garage quoted a guy £800 to fix the power locks on the doors of his car because they had an intermittent fault. It was one connection in the passenger door (that is known to go) and a quick squirt of WD and it was fixed for a tenner in the local independant garage (Hes a good man).

I've just been stung for 400 quid from my local jeep garage. I'd found the fault and told them what it was but they had to do their own investigation which took the job from £150 to £400.

Let us know the answer to those and we'll go from there.
