Just got back after heading from Norwich to Walsall (near Birmingham) and back today, around 350 miles

The bike is now run in, I didn't go past 75mph except for a couple of blips when overtaking :) Took around 3 - 3 1/2 hours each way as I hit traffic in Norwich on the way out and traffic on the M6 on the way back, but not too bad a delay. The fuel economy was pretty darn good, much better than I expected, I figure I'll get 230miles out of a full tank holding a steady speed that I did today...I rarely went past 6K RPM.

Had a couple of situations, both truck drivers moving lanes for overtakes right in front of me, them doing about 55ish and me 75, the bike was nose diving heavily in both cases on the brakes, a little scary but atleast I know I am aware of all this cr4p and can cope. The worst though was the gusty wind, it has really taken it out of my arms having to adjust all the time for the gusts, something I need to relax into a bit more I guess

I will be sore tomorrow, the backs of my knees, my forearms, my shoulders and the small of my back all ache! I had a 30 minute stop each way at the services where the A1 and A14 collide but that helped for maybe half an hour in the ride again...

I much prefer the B roads...atleast you stretch and move about as you go...riding for long periods not moving much really ain't nice!

Thats a fair old journey. Your body will get used to being on the bike and the aches and pains will subside:)

I hope so! I got used to standing on the pegs at high speeds today as well as moving back and forth on the seat altering my posture :)

I am the same when I do my "little" runs in the evening after work...smacking the throttle and going up and down the gears lots I get a lot lot less mpg!

That's why I was surprised to get the mileage I did, being well mannered with the throttle and not going over 6K RPM most of the time got me the mileage I'm sure.

Did you filter on the M6 or sit with the traffic?

Did you filter on the M6 or sit with the traffic?Congestion and road works were the cause and I think the lanes were narrowed because of it, when I entered the motorway the slip road was at a stand still...I went past cars there but once on the motorway and eventually in the centre lane I stayed were I was. It didn't feel safe enough to filter...

I am slowly taking advantage of being on a motorbike and using the options it gives you but I wasn't prepared to risk it between all the traffic yesterday...I guess I was at max doing 10mph for 15-20 minutes

First long journey then - glad it went well :)

Thanks, I actually quite enjoyed the night time ride back, I just wish the A11 cateye's bloody worked! They seem to be knackered when compared to the A14

Give it time, you'll be filtering through traffic on the motorway at 95mph

I hope that was sarcasm!

Now if you mean the odd over take at excessive speed then yes but not sustained speeds like that, I get 6 points and I lose my licence

I forgot you didn't already have a driving licence. :)

You made a fair point in your original message (not sure why you edited it). I don't have those kind of responsibilities so it's not something I really think about.

It makes riding on the motorway a bit more interesting for me anyway :)

Yeah, I don't want to have to go through all the testing again, I'm getting too old for all that and finding the time is hard these days...

The problem with me is I post something then think twice and expect I can edit before anyone notices  But the message was essentially that having family to worry about does put things in a whole different perspective with risk taking...

Really I shouldn't even own a motorbike, but being "captain sensible" is the best I can muster. Mid-life crisis - probably but I'm having fun too

The only committment I was in, I just got out of on Monday.

To be more specific, I do credit control at the moment whilst doing my training. So it's pretty death defying when I'm telling people I'm putting their account on manufacturing stop :D

The woman who I just split up with on Monday wasn't allowed on the back - her dad bought her a car on the condition she never rides or goes on a bike. How gay is that?! I got one without that condition ;)

Time to find a new woman, or three...

Back on track then, newbie bike related question:

So....I am always thinking of what bike next even though I will be with the SV650 for atleast another 12 months or more probably

I want the next bike to have all these points, is it possible?:

Better torque and bhp than the 650, and preferably v-twin
Won't kill my back on long trips
Decent tank range
Can have a good amount of fun at the weekends
Looks the part with full fairing and is sporty(ish)

The boy in me wants a KTM RC8 but I don't think it's good at slow speeds/town traffic and will hurt my back (I doubt the adjustable pegs will adjust anywhere near enough).
The overly responsible adult in me says a Triumph Sprint but the reliability is in question and I really like the idea of a v-twin again.

Is there a sports bike out there that ticks all the boxes or will I be limited to a tourer of sorts that weighs a lot and is not as pretty as a sports equivalent?

Obviously closer the time I'll need to do quite a fair demo rides but any pointers? Should I just bite the bullet and limit myself to a naked? There is a new 1200CC v-twin Aprilia Shiver rumoured...but I doubt tank range will be any good at all!

I figure I might just get my bike some Christmas pressies...so in the effort to stop boredom for all I though I'd pose the following questions :)

I figure getting a nice sounding exhaust first off - check out this one in Carbon (with link pipes incl) and let me know what you think on the design and price: http://www.motorcycle-exhausts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=1_5_56_408&products_id=2639

I'm also thinking of getting a rear hugger and a smoked double bubble screen...any suggestions...the Puig hugger for the bike is almost £100 (is it good for the money?) and what's the best screen design around for wind deflection without compromising the looks?

edit: Found a nice vid of the exhaust on an SV650: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsAOPprnoEs With the baffle in it's not too load either: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g__M2vgNqoU

lol, the more I look at them the more I want one of them...that super duke r is awesome but so is the price...may well be an Aprilia for the next bike if I can get one in matt black, I do prefer the looks and the v-twin of the super duke though :)

Indeedy, and a good bike for it too :)
Atleast another year or more on it before I move on...

Yep I know...both perform lovely but the super duke looks much nicer IMHO! I would be happy with either I am sure...It will require a test ride on both closer the time (12 months away at least!)

edit: Pure stats suggest the bike perform pretty much equal to each other:
Tuono:
Maximum power: 102 kW (139 HP) at 9500 rpm
Maximum torque: 10.9 kgm (107 Nm) at 8500 rpm
Super Duke R:
Maximum power: 97 kW (132 bhp) at 10000 rpm
Maximum torque: 10.4 kgm (102 Nm) at 8000 rpm

Btw, that exhaust is bloody expensive! Mine was only £120 :)
No cutting of pipes, all the link pipes are included too...still expensive?
edit: check out what you get: http://forums.sv650.org/showpost.php?p=2393065&postcount=4

I personnnnnnally wouldn't pay it, but then again I've never looked into full systems.
Are they worth the extra money?
As soon as I got my bike I covered it in a sheet and got the angle grinder to the exhaust. Literally took about 15 seconds to cut through and the new exhaust link pipe slips right on. I couldn't justify an extra £200 just to avoid the cutting, however my budget perhaps may be smaller than yours :D

The Mivv is very nice looking however ;)

It's a new bike hence not wanting to cut through link pipes if I can help it...I would like the option to sell the bike stock later if I want too...I'll get more money back that way with a stock sale and custom parts separate I figure

Still undecided, I may wait until spring before a new exhaust and concentrate on things for the colder/poor weather such as hugger/fender/screen/heated grips/tyres maybe...

You reckon you'd get £200 less just for having a different end can:p?

When I was looking to buy a second hand SV I wasn't interested in one with a custom can because of what that might suggest........

I'd get the same price with or without so selling without and then getting money for the custom unit on top makes sense...selling a stock can seperate just wouldn't happen would it :p

I agree it's irrelevant to us but to others with wads of cash to buy a first bike? Buying a bike from someone without any speeding/thrashing tenancies or custom pipes that suggest such makes more sense to more buyers than not in my opinion...

Anyway, I like the idea of getting a can and link pipes instead of chopping the current ones so it doesn't really matter :p Cost's more then so be it....I didn't get well educated and work the career ladder to not have what I want :)

Hi and welcome

I've only been to the one meeting as I am new to biking and the forum

I am not sure about any riders in the Ipswich area, check out the user map for the EAR here: http://www.mapservices.org/myguestmap/map/sv650orgEAR

Not been feeling quite as confident on it lately for some reason, unsure why. I think I need a new set of tyres that aren't completely ripped to shreds in reviews to get me back on track!
Which SV have you got blitz?

About 2 years back my local dealer done me a nice 0% on a K8 model so I snatched it up and havent looked back since! Late in '08 I got hit off it and had a '09 sport version at the courtesy of his insurance and I had to use that all the way through the winter which was not too bad.
I havent been out on mine for a few weeks and the addiction is kicking in to get out on it! However I have just picked up a jackup kit for it and next month most likely pick up the hugger and belly pan. I keep thinking about taking mine round the track however I think the SV might struggle when it comes to competing with the R6's and other sports bikes round snetterton

I can't even flat foot mine with the seat chopped down, let alone a jackup kit

I have indeed. Got some nice bar end mirrors (by nice I mean cheap ones off ebay, but they do the trick) :)

Nice one! Problem is my bike is a dark grey, when I originally went to get one I was going to go for the Black with Red seat however they seem to be difficult to get hold of now and I missed one by 2 days when I bought mine.

With those bar end mirrors do they not come loose? Are you fitting them into standard bars or renthals?

My left one has come loose once but I gave a good bit of man power and it hasn't budger since. They're into the standard bars my friend :)

The black ones would still look fine on the dark grey IMO, but don't trust my judgment ;)

Thoroughly enjoying the v-twin experience although I am tempted to get risers (I have a sport with clip ons) to get a more comfortable ride...

So both reeder and yourself are both naked riders then, must be a suffolk thing

I think its just me as when I had the hire bike (the sport version) i didnt find it as aggressive as mine, but I have since put this down to the exhaust as once I changed the exhaust on mine it really changed the characteristics, plus I often do journeys to the peak district and Matlock so the forward leaning position most likely would make me ache alot surprisingly at the age of 20.

So are you off your restriction now then blitz?
